8/10/2023 - salil wrote: 94 pointsBrilliant wine. Need to buy a lot of this because while it's very young and primary right now, the balance and depth have me very excited about where this is headed long-term. Remarkably light on its feet with bright acids adding a nice a freshness to the red and black fruited flavours here, and lots of savoury and smoky complexity in the background behind the fruit. Can't wait to see how this ages. |

5/2/2023 - salil wrote: 95 pointsNeeded a couple of hours to really open out and impress; it was tightly coiled fruit at first with not a lot going out. Air brought out an array of toasty, mineral, and other savoury notes, but the overall impression is of a wine that really needs to be left alone for a long time at this point. |

3/29/2015 - salil wrote: 93 pointsStunning wine, incredibly elegant and finessed, and remarkably accessible right now. The aromatics slowly build with air, it's a touch reticent at first, but after an hour or so, it has a beautiful perfume of fresh pomegranates and richer red and dark berried fruits, accented by more savoury anise, tarry, earthy, and faintly spicy elements. The tannin here is incredibly fine grained, and a lot of structure comes from the acidity, which gives it a remarkably graceful palate presence and a sense of real freshness. Can't wait to see what this develops into with some age. |

12/10/2023 - salil wrote: 92 points"Stupid good" - amazing quality for the base Produttori with a core of sappy red fruited flavours framed by light herbal, rose petal, and earthy notes. So easy to drink right now even with plenty of fine grained tannin underneath, and a polished/silken texture. Definitely need to buy more of this. |

1/19/2020 - salil wrote: 96 pointsAnother stunning bottle of this. This one needed a bit of air to fully emerge - somewhat tight and acidic at first, but the fruit and yeasty/bready richness came out with about half an hour. Amazing depth, power, balance. As good a young Champagne as I've had in a long time. |

3/6/2024 - salil wrote: 94 pointsWell, dammit. This sucks - although the wine is terrific, I now have a new producer I may need to buy, AND Alfert is right (there, Alfert - are you happy?). But this is tremendous Bordeaux, so classic in its combination of graphite, tobacco leaf, savoury earthiness, and a core of red and black fruit that somehow manages to both come across as fresh but also mature with that old wine sweetness. There's still some grainy tannin on the back end, but the flavours are very much in that tertiary mature phase and it's incredibly easy to drink now with a silky texture and the acidity (and modest alcohol - 12.5%) giving it a sense of lightness. Outstanding wine, very much in the old school "claret" style, and I should look for more of this. |

3/2/2024 - salil wrote: 93 pointsBlatantly point-chased Levenberg for this one (and the 2020), and damn, he's right - this is a heck of a wine, though quite different from the '20. Whereas that one was much more dark fruited, restrained, and showing its structure, this feels surprisingly accessible with a much more red fruited character, but also comes across quite accessible and easy to drink with the fruit very generous/ripe, and the tannin surprisingly silky and fine-grained. |

3/3/2022 - salil wrote: 91 pointsLike this a lot. Obviously very primary right now with the youthful fruit taking centre stage, but I really like the balance here - there's nice acidity and the alcohol (13.5%) is in check. Opens up and becomes more savoury/smoky with time in the decanter, and I wouldn't mind revisiting some of these in a decade or two. |

1/14/2017 - salil wrote: 93 pointsA touch unyielding and sulfury at first, but this quickly opens up with time in the decanter. Initially this is very good, but a couple of hours of air turn it into an absolutely stunning young Riesling with an array of piercingly bright orchard fruit, slate, gentle florality, and a lightness and delicate touch that speaks of true Kabinett. Fantastic wine, and I'm glad I own a few of these. |

3/19/2020 - salil wrote: 94 pointsSpectacular. Still lots of time ahead for this, but it's compelling and absolutely thrilling right now. Vibrant, bright red and dark fruit; gravelly minerality; those fresh green (but not unripe) Chinon notes; absolutely perfect balance. Brilliant wine. |

2022 Bedrock Wine Co. Carignan Evangelho VineyardContra Costa County more |
2/23/2024 - salil wrote: 91 pointsTerrific wine. Decanted three hours, which smoothed out the rough edges and tannin apparent in a very brief initial sip when it was opened. It speaks more of Bedrock than Carignan, but it's absolutely delicious with lots of bright berried and black cherry fruit with a slight smoky topnote that turns more savoury and earthy on the back end. |

7/2/2016 - salil wrote: 95 pointsAnother absolutely spectacular bottle of this. Not much I can add to my previous notes - this is just classic Bordeaux with layers of rich fruit, cedar, cigar smoke, tobacco, graphite, and that forestal green PLL signature all coming together very seamlessly on a frame that conveys power with remarkable finesse. There's still a little tannin that lurks on the back end which suggests this will hold a while longer, but this is stunning and I can't imagine it being too much better. |

2/20/2016 - salil wrote: 93 pointsExcessibe Rhone and Riesling night (St. Marks Place Grand Sich, NY): Goddamn, the acidity in this is incredible. Such amazing cut and focus on the palate with powerful acids and bright effervescence beneath the array of apple, citrus, biscuit, and yeasty flavours. There's plenty of complexity and depth here, but this is a really compelling wine just for the level of vibrancy and energy here. |

4/3/2023 - salil wrote: 95 pointsOpened/served a bit too cold and rather unyielding at first, but very quickly opened out with some air and as it warmed up nearer cellar temperature. Very much a knockout bottle of Champagne, and an appropriate late night pull to go with the UConn NCAA win. |

1/9/2024 - salil wrote: 91 pointsNot much I can say about this other than it's delicious with pizza. Ripe, exuberant red fruits and spice, nicely lifted by bright acids with the alcohol kept in check, and very easy to drink. Leftovers actually show better the next day with more clarity to the fruit (on the first night it felt a little dense and almost fruit-bomby), and it continues to be delicious with leftover pizza. |

2015 Pierre Gonon St. JosephSyrah more |
1/21/2018 - salil wrote: 94 pointsProbably the most exciting young Gonon I've had since the 07 or 10. This is going to be something really special with time, though it's already making some progress there. It's bursting with ripe red and dark berried fruit and black olive tapenade - intense and ripe, but also really compelling right now with a lot of depth and complexity. The aromatics show plenty of pepper, violets, and stemmy notes, and these only pick up in intensity with more air while the palate starts to show a more savoury component on the back end. The overall balance is stunning, with plenty of bright acidity that keeps this feeling incredibly fresh and vibrant on the palate, and a lot of grainy tannin beneath that comes through on the finish. |

2/11/2019 - salil wrote: 92 pointsLiked this more than the '04 Tondonia I opened the night before. A bit more open, with the fruit and floral notes more expressive, and a slightly softer feel to the palate without the tannic edge the Tondonia had. I love the balance and finesse in both wines, though right now like this more. |

2/17/2019 - salil wrote: 92 pointsAfternoon blinds and pizza (My place): As good as it was when I last had it five years ago. It's a brilliant bottle of Riesling with incredibly clear, fresh Mosel fruit, light florality, and an intense slatey minerality, all packaged with just a faint hint of sweetness that's perfectly balanced by bright acids. |

2001 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling AusleseMosel Saar Ruwer more |
4/21/2016 - salil wrote: 95 pointsMonumental Auslese. So painfully young, yet so complex - though this was double-decanted several hours before dinner, and then a third time afterwards. Despite the decants, a whiff of sulfur and sponti yeast funk still lingers on the nose, but beneath that there's an array of classic Mosel fruit flavours over a slate/stony mineral base, with the savoury and mineral flavours only getting more intense and vivid with air. The balance and length here are spectacular, and I'm glad I have a lot more in the cellar. This is already spectacular now, but I can't begin to imagine what this may turn into with a couple more decades (at least)! 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2003 Château Pontet-CanetPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
5/27/2016 - salil wrote: 91 pointsI've had a few bottles of 2003 Bordeaux recently that have defied the stereotype of '03s being clumsy, jammy, and overripe, and this is another to add to the list. It's certainly a ripe wine with plenty of plummy and dark berried fruit at its core, but there's also a savoury earthiness beneath, and a bright herbal, eucalyptus-like note on the nose that adds a fresh, high toned edge to the aromatics. The palate is very well balanced with enough acidity to give it a sense of lightness and freshness on the palate, and a long, savoury finish. Very impressive. 5 people found this helpful, do you? 2/13/2019 - salil wrote: 93 pointsYeah, I need some of this in my cellar. This is showing brilliantly with some air now - really classic claret scents with lots of graphite, cedar wood, tobacco, and earth framing a core of red and dark fruited flavours that feel slightly austere and restrained. It opens out with some time in the decanter and the tannin softens with some air, and this is a wine that I imagine I'd be glad to have a few bottles of several years from now when the structure's fully resolved. |

3/25/2024 - salil wrote: 93 pointsDouble decanted an hour and a half before serving. Terrific old school claret here - black fruit, cedar, tobacco, greener herbal notes, and a more savoury earthy/graphite character all come together seamlessly on a medium weight frame. It's not a big wine, but there's remarkable intensity to the aromatics, and a striking palate presence with bright acids giving it a sense of lift and vibrancy. Lovely wine that still has years ahead - I'll hold my remaining bottles a while longer. |

3/15/2015 - salil wrote: 92 pointsReally impressive. In a great place where that core of dark berried fruit is still quite youthful, but also surrounded by more developed and savoury cedary, graphite, and earthy elements. There's really bright acidity beneath giving the fruit a sense of real freshness, and the tannin is quite fine grained, becoming more silky with a couple of hours in the decanter. |

12/21/2016 - salil wrote: 89 points2011 disgorgement. Painfully young and undeveloped - this has lots of bright fruit, chalky minerality, and some yeasty and crackery accents, but disappointingly shows none of the additional depth or oxidative complexity I'd typically expect from Krug. It's a nicely balanced Champagne, but rather primary right now and not particularly complex. 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

3/29/2018 - salil wrote: 95 pointsNeeded something appropriate for Opening Day, so opened this to go with the Yankees/Blue Jays game. This was just right for the occasion, and a stunning wine to follow over an afternoon. Lots of ripe, intense citrus and white fruit upfront accented by biscuit and yeasty notes, turning more minerally and chalky on the back end. There's impressive power and richness here, but also fantastic cut - there's a crisp and racy feel to the fruit, and it feels very light despite the intensity of flavour. Fantastic wine, and even more enjoyable while watching Stanton hit a couple out of the park. |
