My last magnum. Slow ox'd for 30 min before putting the stopper in the bottle and taking to Capital Grille for Leon's 66th. Cork came out in 3 pieces at home with the last third pretty soft and saturated.

Still quite dark in the glass no hint of age or bricking. This wine is 13.5% alc and has aged beautifully. This is my 2nd magnum of this. The first one was a 97 last year, I think.

Enjoyed with Wagyu, king crab, lobster and mushrooms along with great company and friends/colleagues I have known for 35 years. Just a fantastic evening....the initial nose on this at the pnp and for the 1st hour was a 98. Perfumed, floral, sweet fruit and incense. Richard Arrowood was right when he said the climate on the Sonoma side was more suited to Cabs for aging. This magnum bottle had an easy 10 years left, maybe more. It's classic Cabernet, integrated, smooth, hint of mushrooms, leather, roses, and a cedar component on the finish. Only at 6 hours of air, late into the evening at home on the last glass did the fruit turn a tad blacker and denser. Again, this is a sign that the wine has not aged out, but can go for many years longer. Just fabulous.......

Obtained about a year ago, so not sure as to it's handling all these years....

Late decision to go out to dinner and little time to decant, maybe 30 minutes. Re-bottled and enjoyed tableside over the next 2 hours with Osso Buco ravioli.

Dark garnet/ruby in the glass belies its 26 years of age. Nose of graphite, some tobacco/cigar box hints, a hint of caramel and dark plum fruit. Palate much the same with lots of dark plum and a hint of oak. Really seemed to blossom after about 45-60 min of air. Very well balanced, with plenty of acidity to go another 10+ years. Enjoying the last glass now, about 5-6 hours after dinner and a perfumed element shows up on the nose. Very, very nice........

At 29 years old, I had limited expectations given a recent run of corked older wines. Boy did I underestimate this bottle. Better than any prior bottle of the ‘94 or others I’ve had.

PnP and ready from the start. Medium body, somewhat translucent crimson, but very little bricking, thick viscous legs. Red fruited beauty, tannins faded and gone, but plenty of acid in the bottle to go 5+ more years. Blind I would have said early 2000s. Incredible nose and palate even at this age. Tart red cherry, hint of cranberry, cardamom, spice infused fruit, black tea, forest floor, burnt hardwood, tilled earth, black olive. Long finish that went down with ease. Cannot get over how young this tasted for 29 yrs, for my palate a near perfect blend of BDX meets CA from Sonoma. I realize this score is a high outlier, but this wine delivered the goods on this day and deserves the number. The only thing missing is the ability to sit outside . . . maybe in 2-3 weeks when ‘not as hot’ summer starts.

Very dark red color. PNP, split bottle over 3 hours. I opened this up for my Dad's birthday and we enjoyed it with some awesome tenderloins. I have to say I was very impressed with how this was drinking. It was open and giving right from the start. A classic Reserve Speciale from Arrowood that shows so much poise and grace in a more restrained style. The nose shows blackcherry, cedarbox, cigar, cassis and spices. The palate has a killer texture with with very polished tannins and a mix of red and black fruits and graphite that is quite beguiling. Lots of lift and nice length too. I found myself constantly thinking, boy this so nice and well balanced. Hard to pace yourself with this honey. These are in a great window, but there's no hurry, these can go for years.

This wine just keeps delivering, and might be even better than the last bottle. Earlier this year at my wine club, I said I was pretty sure the '01 would eventually surpass all the 90's Reserve Specialés and I believe that point has come. The tannins are mellowing but not quite gone yet, and the secondary flavors of tobacco and vanilla are blending nicely - the tobacco is a hair more pronounced, while the vanilla (oak?) is subsiding a bit, and an Earthy element is coming into play. The fruit is still very much in the foreground and the spice is just right. I'm not raising the score from the last time, but if this continues to evolve and improve it's going to be in rare territory (i.e. 98+ points) very soon. A brief inventory today showed that there is more than a case left in the cellar. Doing the happy dance tonight!

Winapalooza VI; 9/2/2022-9/4/2022 (Atlanta): This was a signed magnum brought by Mark and the empty now sitting proudly in my cellar.
This wine was unbelievable. Drinking so young you would never have guessed this was more than a decade old. Perfectly mature and integrated and a perfect match for our steak dinner.
Mark’s note is more comprehensive but this really was a treat and lots of life left.
I have 92, 97 and ‘99 entry level bottles from this producer and they have all been beyond expectations (except the corked one I guess..lol)

Decanted 1 hour and slow ox'd another hour. Leather, menthol, old briar and graphite on the nose. Nice, spicy fruit. Mulberry and cinnamon. Black fruit and a hint of caramel, so layered....if you like old Napa/Sonoma cabs this is a beauty.......my personal WOTN based on its complexity and still showing quite well at 22 years of age. Clear meniscus around the light reddish rim but no orange bricking to the wine as of yet.

2nd bottle of this...pnp'd into a decanter to have with my Domino's meat lovers pizza getting ready for the Phillies eventual WS victory ........but alas, it's a rainout, tonight.

Great from the pnp, this cork not spongy as the last one was, but rather dried out a tad and came out in 2 parts even with an ah-so. Moderate sediment on the bottle, nice dark garnet color still. So smooth right from the get go....settled in better after 1-2 hours just as the last bottle. The nose has a really nice earthy, dirty fall leaves/mushroom notes to it and some wonderful caramel tones, as well. This bottle developed a little more acidic backbone by the second hour and all throughout the bottle, had a tad more of that great caramel note on the nose and the palate. Love when old toasty barrels, vanilla and still good 29 yo fruit comes together......based on how this bottle has held up, I have no worries for my others going a few more years, too. How can you beat this kind of Napa (lol, really from Sonoma) royalty for $35/bottle at auction? If people out there only knew what they were missing......94 pts.

addendum: 13.8% alc....amazing and the longer it's open, a clean, bright red cherry fruit emerges, some of the caramel starts to fade a bit. This bottle moving toward a 95.......

Awesome night with Mary and Barry...this was the kickoff wine. Pnp by moi...cork in great shape, wine still deep, dark purple/magenta, no hint of bricking or aging whatsoever. Nice oak/cedar component, mushrooms, and dark red fruit. Tough to believe this wine is almost 20 years old.....can go what? 10? 20 more years? Amazing........

Addendum: as the 1-2 hours wore on drinking this one a very nice cinnamon/barrel spice emerged on the back end and the texture became more velvet like in the mouth.....by the end it was an easy 94 for Barry and me.

Decanted and tasted through the evening, with a seared ribeye and oven roasted vegetables. Nose of raspberry, blackberry, cigar box, white pepper. On the palate, you want small sips to avoid being overwhelmed. Everything you smelled is there on the palate, plus cassis coming to the fore, classic cabernet profile. Mouth-filling tannin and acid, moving to a bit of pumpkin pie spice on the finish. Oh boy, do I wish this wasn't my last bottle. Superb.

An excellent experience. Drank with no food after a decant. Excellent nose of fruit, rocks and pencil lead. Full bodied, complex flavors with very long finish that was just the slightest bit harsh. By second glass with more air time, all complexity remained but finish had completely rounded off and easily lasted over a minute. Paid $75 for this recently, probably best enjoyment per dollar wine I’ve had all year

Clear garnet core out to a moderate edge and moderate browning rim - developed. Clean and expressive nose of cedar box, dark earth, tobacco, dried fruit - complex and layered nose. Dry with med+ tannins, acids and alcohol (alcohol not stated on bottle but suspect 14%) and medium body. Fully resolved and integrated tannins but still firm. Dried cherries and some cranberry on the palate with an amazing silkiness. The finish is long with the cranberry note persisting. A very deft touch with the oak and well handled fruit has resulted in an outstanding wine that's at its peak right now. It could still go another 3+ years but is going to be sliding down the back slope from here on in.

These Arrowoods age so nicely and this one was no exception. Not as good as my last bottle but a bit more overpowering oak. But otherwise delightful, plenty of fruit. Still needs 30 min to burn of the aromas of dirt and transform into florals and fruity and sweet oak. Glad I have more although clearly there is bottke variation even in a case with the same provenance.

My 1000th tasting note!!! If I had realized I would have tried to drink something more dramatic.

Opened after we drank the 1997 way too quickly and this was just as good. Same score as last year (93) and amazes me every time that this is an entry level Sonoma cab that is still going strong 30 years later. Glad I am only halfway through the case.
Dark color, plenty of fruit but also many tertiary notes. Nice balance and acid. If you like old style cali cab you will love this, if you only like fruit only fresh baby wines then maybe not your thing—but worth a try!!

One of Those Big Birthdays (Margaux's Table, White Bear Lake, MN): Very dark red/purple color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. This wasn't quite as evolved as I expected it to be. Full bodied, dark cherry, graphite, plum, dark chocolate, blackberry, black currants, silky, dried earth, wood and some prominent tannins. I like this a lot, but this bottle could have used even more time or air. 92+ to 93pts.

On PnP this was heavy on blueberries, oak, and dark soil, hint of incense, some under-ripened red cherry. At 21+ years this was still vibrant and primary to say the least, with more tannic structure in place than I ever could have imagined. Very unlike the mid-90s versions at this stage, which had plenty of secondary and tertiary notes. That being said it needed air and air it got. Hardly any bricking to speak of.

At 1 hr, it smoothed out a bit but still somewhat locked down, very little improvement. Mostly candied cherries.

At 2 hr, dried currant, cinnamon and caramel notes appeared on the palate, but the nose went silent.

I think this would have done better with food, along with 2 hrs of air. The ‘94s set an extremely high bar for these wines, this bottle wasn’t even close. So much for high expectations. Try again in 2027.

Still looks 10 years old at the most. Cigar tobacco, minerals , grilled meat and herbs on the nose. Surprisingly still notably tannic, lots of cherry and blackberry flavors, moderately acidic in a good way, long and lovely finish. Drinking well even at this late stage. Wonderful! Down to my last bottle remaining which likely won't further improve but would hold its own against similarly age Bordeaux IMO. I've been drinking these slowly over time and is has been a good journey. Drank with grilled rib eye. Improved after open for about two hours.

Another great wine from Dick Arrowood and "just" the regular Sonoma version. I love the intense cassis notes on the nose and palate, perfumed, boysenberry, spices, tangy, really earthy, intense with good ripeness to the fruit. Seems to get darker over the hour and then the oak starts to dominate the fruit a bit and the tannins seem more apparent. Very, very good - but may not want to sit on these.

Purple & black fruit plus black pepper are what stand out, with a hint of leather in the finish. It's almost as if Zinfandel was cuvéed into this, which was probably what GASTROMD noticed in their note below when they said "brambly". Monte Rosso fruit has it's own characteristics, and this bottle an excellent example. I like the '03, but love this '01. It's held up amazingly well without losing much flavor as the secondary note of leather has developed. Had a bottle with the Connecticut group a few months back, and decided it's time to drink this up and make a proper TN here on CT. While not the most complex Cab, it's simply delicious and worth savoring every sip of each glass.

Almost 6 months since the last one of these. My score is an average for the overall bottle given the stages it went through. Some bottle variation present with corks. I took no chances and used the Durand on this one to be safe, the other night. The cork was pristine upon inspection. Poured off a nice glass and put a Repour stopper on the bottle and then back into the cellar with it. Immediate nose of sweet cedar, mushrooms, graphite and red fruit. Maybe just a hint of band aid, too? I smelled the cork, it wasn't 'corked'. 4-EP is the main contributor to Brett and 'band aid' smell, and I suppose that is what I found, here. There was no telltale 'barnyard'. The wine itself was dark red fruited, a bit thin, but no real bricking even at 30 years of age and notably beautiful and consistent acidic backbone throughout. Palate followed the nose. I'd rate it an 88-90 then, at best. I took all of 2+ hours to finish the one glass and it changed remarkably in that time. The band aid, blew off about an hour in. More bright red cherry emerged, the acidity remained perfect, the wine became smoother in the mouth and gained some weight with some darker, richer cassis notes and sweeter fruit showing up near the end. At that moment it was a 96. Popped the rest of the bottle last night for the HMCs and we enjoyed it over 2-3 hours before and during dinner. There was a much smaller essence of band aid on the nose and it left more quickly. The wine itself, still took about 2 hours to reach its peak again, maybe one point less, a 95. It was remarkably consistent in that regard. Make no mistake, this is an old wine, with all its tertiary characteristics, (except devoid of bricking), in place. And while each bottle from my auction lot of 6 has been just a tad different, each bottle had been very consistent in its own right. That's remarkable winemaking from Sonoma and Mr. Arrowood some 30 years ago.......

Addendum: this was the first 'old' bottle of wine that I've used the Repour stopper on and it, too, seems to be very consistent in its performance, maintaining the integrity of both young and old wines, alike. At least in the short term. I will continue to utilize them and work on lengthening their time in bottle in the coming months, but this appears to be a wonderful addition to the wine hobby/business. There should never be another glass of a tired open bottle of wine served to a customer in a bar or restaurant, ever again. While marketed to the food/beverage trade for that reason, the Coravin just isn't a practical alternative given the cost and time it takes to serve in that environment. The Repour is just quicker and cheaper to use, especially when bought in bulk which is what the industry would and SHOULD be doing, more so than even the average at home wine drinker.

Deep, dark opaque garnet in the glass, 2 hours of air reveals graphite on the nose with strong dark fruit on the palate. Great depth to the fruit. Great tobacco flavor on the palate. Amazing how this doesn't drink like a 19 yo bottle! Plenty of life left in this one given the remaining acidity and tannic structure. Initially gave this a 94 but with another hour of air the finishing acidity and fruit brings it up another point for me.

Dark as night. Edges slightly brownish. Slightly. nose of pure black currant and boysenberries. Palate shows amazing attack of deep dark black fruits with perfect balance. Black currants, the boysenberries I already mentioned, some blackberries and a hint of black cherries. A almost imperceptible dose of creme de cassis along with some cardamom, cinnamon. A wonderful light-coolness runs through this. Tannins are big with soft edges and acidity just right. Finish keeps it all true and in play. A perfect rendition of Sonoma Cab that I only wish I had 5 more of. Agewise, for me, perfect.
