Bought the Kilikanoon 2004 horizontal collection sometime back and brought this wine to a causal drinking afternoon at Extra Space today with my wine mates.

Bottle breathed for 4 hours prior to consumption. Dark purple in color with notes of lots of plums, some pencil lead, tobacco and a touch of black pepper in the finish. Some flint and red fruits are evident in the body. Has some depth and finesse.

Although this is considered almost an entry level wine for Kilikanoon, there is nothing entry level about this wine. Well made and structured, the primary fruits are fast fading and it is time to drink up if you have not done so.

Black spiced plums and black currants with incense nuances and lots of sandalwood. Actually quite befitting of its oracle name as I can actually imagine drinking this in a smoke filled room talking to a fortune teller with heavy perfume that is smoking hand rolled fresh tobacco leaved cigarette and eating some bacon rolls at the same time. Has a smooth fruited ending and actually quite well balanced.

From 75cl, good cork, stained 1mm back. Decanted 1 hour. Some disagreement about this wine at the dinner table. I found it fat, sweet and inexpressive-monolithic, with an unpleasantly syrupy-floury texture, perhaps like an overripe Primitivo a few years over the hill. Martin praised bouquet garni herbal action (rosemary, thyme, bay leaf) and the sheer alcoholic rush. Let's hope he's right, and the remaining two bottles in the cellar turn out to be more to my taste in a couple of years time. 89P(?)

Great value for money kinda Shiraz. Lots of fruit, a bit subdue in the mid-palate but opened up after 3-4 hours of dencating. Wish I had waited for the rest of the bottle that long. probably can do with another year or two of ageing. The tannins are well integrated already. A little jammy at first but had a nice medium finish. For $65 in Singapore it is still a great wine to have but I am sure you can find soemthing better in that price point.

When I read the previous reviews, few seem to recommend decanting for an hour. I would rather say decant for 4 hours or just leave it in the bottle It keeps going for fairly long time. 4-5 hours. Decanting it felt like was an overkill.

Decanted, Deep purple color, floral and ash on the nose, ash, blackberry fruit and leather on palate, full bodied but balanced. Despite 15.5% alcohol it does not tast hot. Great finish. Still has a few years left.

Second bottle. Still good. Medium plus bodied, going to full with time, plus some sweetness. Blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry, dark chocolate, coffee, pepper, menthol. Best enjoyed next day after half an hour's bottle breathing.
Next day it's got more integrated and became something like a nice Rhone Syrah. Ended in 92/100.

Whoa. Yes Whoa. I never would have thought this was a wine with a dozen years on it--great color with just the slightest evidence of bricking. Great fruit on the nose and a meatiness while subtle, still evident. On the palate, big fruit, mocha, and considerable depth. Whoa. Yes whoa. thedrunkencyclist.com

I'm not a big fan of Aussie Shiraz, but this was fun to drink last night. If it were not for the extracted, almost sweet finish, this could have been from Cote-Rotie. Surprised by how much herbal greenness is on the nose.

Needs a bit of air / decant to round out and integrate acidity. Second and 3rd glasses behaved much better than the first. Not a "big bruiser" Oz shiraz in my opinion. The "aired out" version is very nicely behaved. Not much in the way of tannins, but I'd be surprised if this didn't continue to drink very well for the next 2-3 years minimum.

A blockbuster of a wine! Pure cassis nectar with waves of chocolate, vanilla essence and pure Ferrari engine power on the nose. Full bodied, heavily extracted concentrate on the palate, with good acidity and still raw tannin - another 10 years in the bottle should see this mellow down. Still very much developing, with wafts of meat and American oak over-taking the kirsch liqueur aromas after 90 minutes in the glass. The finish goes on and on and on. Wonderful stuff!

White Asparagus Dinner at Greg & Sayo's. (Their Place, Hong Kong): Somewhat hastily popped and briefly decanted. Black totally opaque colour. Nose is deep monolithic blackberry and oak but all very pure. Palate is very deep rich blueberry and american oak, coffee grounds, tight black cherry that's not yet ripe. Too closed and young to sense much finish. It hasn't moved much since my June 2009 note when I said "don't revisit for 3 years". Not scored because it was a bit unfair for it to follow two properly-decanted and fully open wines....the 1985 L'Evangile and the 1991 Ch Musar.

Amazing balance in a wine that was so exuberant 5 years ago. Dark fruit with Forrest floor notes are integrated with oak in a wonderful way. It took this wine a long time to come together, but it is there now and still has several years ahead of it.

Upon opening this is sweet on the aromatics with notes of strawberries and smells of a winery. The flavors are sweet and round and powerful. With a little more air we get darker and deeper flavors entering the mix with some spicy notes and a more complex profile. The longer it was open, the more I liked it, as the secondary flavors made this a tasty bottle. Definitely new world, clean and not over the top. This aged nicely. A short decant recommended for max expression.

Jazzy blue and black berry, a bit of pepper and heat with a bit of an alcohol impact. Nose includes dirt, phenolic components and some crushed berry in the back of the throat.

From 75cl, perfect cork, decanted 45 minutes, continued to improve over 2 hours. I enjoyed this bottle a lot more than my last one only 6 months ago. Big, fat, inky, blackberry-essence Aussie shiraz with 15,5% alc well integrated and fabulous road-tar/funky dark herbal action on the finish. Mature now, no hurry, worth decanting at least an hour in advance. 92(+)P

Last bottle was splash decanted to have with pork stew. Aromas of black cherry and blackberry both of which are in the riper area, vanilla, cream, a touch of meatiness, leather. Fruit sweet on the palate; fresh plums, blackberry and cherries, slight tannic grip is emery paper textured, a little vanilla and milk chocolate here as well. Alcohol is controlled. Yum

For my tastes this is drinking very well. Big, but neither huge nor hot and blowsy as some aged Aussie shiraz wines from this period can be. flavorful, with resolved tannins, but enough acidity and structure to provide balance. I can't see this getting better, but maybe....92-93-ish

Still a very interesting wine that needs an hour or more to open. Candied blueberries, slightly sour blackberries, menthol, some herbs and a surprisingly effervescent acidity quality.

If you have ever paid $150+ for great Hermitage without tasting the Oracle, you’ve missed out. Earth. Smoke. Violet. Spice. Dark fruit. This wine is nothing short of captivating. I’ve been surprised more than a few times in finding great wine, this is one of the more pleasant surprises. The ‘02 is singing now and for another several years to go.
