2/2/2013 - bpj87 Does not like this wine: 84 pointsThis would have posed a decent value as a $10-15 Prosecco. Sweetness on the attack, hollow and acidic midpalate with a carbonic/metallic note, and a sweet finish. I see how this is regarded as the antithesis of farmer-fizz. |

3/23/2013 - bpj87 Likes this wine: 98 pointsLos Angeles "Bucket List" Offline (Los Angeles, California): Quintessential Graves nose: smoke, cigar tobacco, gravel, iron, forest floor, and dark fruits. Tertiary notes abound on the palate alongside black cherry and moderate acidity. The balance is flawless, and the mouthfeel is truly that of an iron fist in a velvet glove. |

12/27/2013 - bpj87 Likes this wine: 95 pointsWhat a treat to finally return to the bottle that started me down this slippery slope over 5 years ago – and it's as great as I remember it! Dark fruits, cigar, leather, smoke, earth, and mineral. Such a harmonious wine, and there is something perfect about drinking Haut-Brion with steak. I recently made the questionable decision of allowing myself to be seduced by Burgundy, so that will be another fun slippery slope, but mature Haut-Brion is still my ideal of great wine. |

5/29/2013 - bpj87 Likes this wine: 92 pointsLiquid slate – cliché, I know – but the Himmelreich possesses so much minerality that all of the fruit, acidity, and sweetness take secondary roles in the overall profile. |

10/15/2013 - bpj87 wrote: 95 pointsWhile not up to the lofty standard of the prior two 47 Borgogno Baroli I tasted, this was still a memorable experience. Roses and menthol exude from the glass. With the tannin completely resolved, the palate is an ethereal delight of beautiful acids, red fruits, and baking spices. A singular mouthfeel makes the wine – the liquid floats over the palate with a certain electricity that is really special. |

4/7/2012 - bpj87 wrote: 96 pointsA Tasting of Aged Old World Wines (Cambridge, MA): [Decanted 8hrs] A screeching, primal nose bombards with game, smoke, mushroomy funk, fine vinegar, tobacco & leather; there are brilliant flashes of menthol here. Mouth-watering acidity brightens unweathered fine tannin; amongst the gravitas of noble minerality, light, bright red cherry fruit adds charm to the palate. The finish haunts you. An old sage mocking the pantheon. |

4/7/2012 - bpj87 wrote: 87 pointsA Tasting of Aged Old World Wines (Cambridge, MA): New world style. Not my style. Blowsy dark fruit (opulent?), low acid (plush?), round tannin, heat, oak toast, creme de cassis, and lacking in structure (hedonistic?). |

1/5/2013 - bpj87 Likes this wine: 97 pointsBel Air Bacchanal (Los Angeles, California): After nearly a half century of evolution, the tertiary, secondary, and primary features are in perfect harmony. Cigar smoke, leather, tobacco, mushroom, and the fermentation of decaying leaves explode from the glass, each waft revealing a novel nuance. With the fine tannins nearly resolved, the flawlessly smooth and finessed palate is pure elegance: black cherries, medium-plus acidity, and earthiness. Lightness of touch is the perfect foil for such great breadth and quiet power, all reinforced by quaint tannins on the immeasurable finish. Just divine. |

11/18/2013 - bpj87 Likes this wine: 91 pointsWas really impressed a couple weeks ago by some more exalted young PYCMs, so I decided to pick one of these up to test their entry level. And I was again definitely impressed! Sure, the complexity and subtle refinement are missing, but the depth, mouthfeel, and precision are all there. In my limited experience, this is by far the most impressed I've been by white Burg at this price point. |

2011 Gilbert et Christine Felettig Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les CarrièresPinot Noir more |
5/11/2015 - bpj87 wrote: 92 pointsReally nice after pop and pour, offering floral, smoky aromatics and a ripe yet elegant palate of red and dark fruits, mineral, spice and oak. After about an hour in the decanter, the oak became a bit prominent on the finish. This could use some time to integrate and shed it's baby fat. Despite this, the wine still displayed good purity and maintained a seamless, middleweight mouthfeel. |

2007 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon MateriumOakville more |
5/12/2012 - bpj87 wrote: 76 pointsI eagerly anticipated this wine, a revered example of what some might ordain the best of Napa Cabernet. However, I was a bit apprehensive: would this turn out a caricatured example of the worst of interventionist new world winemaking? Well we opened it and, boy, was I right. Boasting a seething 14.8% alcohol by volume, heat featured prominently on the nose and palate, going so far as to impart that warm burn with which Scotch drinkers might find themselves acquainted. Overwhelming all tannic structure was layered, plush fruit, mostly plum and prune. Surely, one could call this an impressive cocktail. It really does not get more extracted and dense than this. And if one's metric of choice in evaluating wine is the magnitude of lush concentration, the Materium certainly delivers 100 points of hedonistic pleasure. |
