2016 Vajra (and Baudana) Barolo tasting (Wellington, NZ): This cru, which faces the western side of the Serralunga d'Alba hill, is characterized by white marls and limestone on the surface with rich layers of iron in the depths of the soil. Baudana’s vines are 40 years old.

A lovely, very Cerretta bouquet of dark cherries, blackberries, chalky minerals, steel and balsamico. Piercing, high-toned dark and blue florals. On palate, very precise, persistent, direct and linear. A limestone mineral backbone pulls the fruit together. Tensile with crème de cassis, black cherries, hoison sauce, graphite and fresh, wild blackberries. A little austere, quite closed. Lovely, vibrant acidity. The smooth, refined nature of the wine hides the serious tannic and acid architecture. Long, finishing mineral and chalky. I’d broach from 2026+. 94+.

2010 Barolo at La Festa del Barolo (Four Seasons Restaurant, NYC): Roberto Conterno says this will be sold only in magnums and 3 liter bottles to commemorate the first vintage labeled Barolo by Conterno from this vineyard. He did bottle some 750s for tastings, which is what we are tasting today. Stunning nose of roses, black fruit, and tar. Dark, powerful, complex, expansive on the long finish. Just wow! Really blows everything before it out of the water. Later with lunch, just fucking great! 97-99

La Festa del Barolo Masterclass (The Pool, NYC): The Baudana Cerretta was one of my favorite '19s in the tasting. On the nose, I found dark red to black berry fruit, fresh red roses, lifted with added freshness from orange peel. On the palate, it is medium to full in body with high acidity, beautifully sweet dark red to black fruit. The tannins are a touch fierce today, but there's enough energy and sweetness here that I find it a joy to drink regardless. Give it 10 years, and this should be singing.

The '14 Cerretta is young and I found it closed off, but it continues to show great promise. The combination of concentration, inner sweetness, acidity, and finesse of the wine on the palate is remarkable.

On the nose, I found cool tones of sweet dark red raspberry fruit, savory, smoky herbs and spices, mint, and fresh roses. On the palate, the wine was incredibly refined and medium in body with high acidity and a beautiful sweetness to the fruit. I found dark red raspberry and cherry fruit, red floral tones, savory spices, licorice, and a hint of blood orange.

This should be a very long ager and when it fully opens up I think it's going to be fantastic.

Fruit and spice are dense: some leather too. Really very tannic and drying. But the length... The sheer contained power and beauty waiting to explode in 10-15 years. Fascinating.

93-94 Reportedly the best value buy of the 2019 vintage. Double decanted in AM and this may have shut down the wine a little bit in the evneing. Med+ acids, and good balance of fruit of tannin. I did not get the filigree precision of a top wine, although this will certainly be better in 10 years.

Seductive nose of cherry, tar, raspberry, plum, rosemary, and crushed rose petals. Silky on the palate despite the firm ripe tannins. There is a decent whack of warm alcohol, but everything is so beautifully integrated. Long, sweet finish. Gorgeous now but more to come.

Agree with the other notes. I'd add that it's quite full, round, juicy, just bordering on jammy in the mid-palate. I'd like to give it more time.

2019 Barolo Masterclass at La Festa del Barolo (The Pool, New York): Ruby. High toned green notes and later, orange peel. Medium to light weight, real delicacy. Beautiful rich but not overly ripe red and black fruit, tar, excellent acidity, and a long, soil-filled finish with a touch of youthful austerity. Slightly more sappy than the Massolino. Already soft, dynamic, and well balanced. There is probably more structure lurking, though, and this seems like a wine that is likely to go into a shell for a while. I loved the style and stylishness here, and this underdog managed to beat out some of the bigger names today.

Cooler fruit than the Baudana bottling. The nose is deeper yet more lifted with terrific floral fruit ad spice. More structured and sapid than the Baudana. It's deeper, yet more focused with fantastic balance. Expansive yet graceful and elegant. Fantastic. Long. Firm ripe tannins. I love this wine. Fantastic.

Five days in Barolo: A visit at Giacomo Conterno with Roberto Conterno (Monforte d'Alba): While Roberto owned the vineyard in 2008, fruit from that year and 2009 were declassified into a "Langhe Nebbiolo Cerretta." Roberto mentioned that it was a variety of reasons, but in '08 he wasn't a part of the pruning and early vineyard work, so he didn't feel appropriate to make a Barolo anyway. The vineyard was then hit by hail, worsening things. He said it "could not have started worse" with Cerretta for Nebbiolo. 2009 he simply did not like the way the fruit was shaping up for a Barolo. Thus, 2010 is the first Barolo from Cerretta. As a side, Roberto mentioned that he finds the Cerretta often more structured than Cascina Francia, but expects the 2013 to be the opposite.

Again, this was bottled just three weeks ago. The aromas were very floral, pretty, and a little spicy, with fresh tar notes. The palate was soft, with nice spice and elegance. Good intensity of tannins. Opens up a bit in the mouth with some apple fruit. Roberto mentioned as he sips the wine that it offers more fruit than the Cascina Francia and I agree. The finish offers a huge wall of acid (as did the Barbera). Rich and coating the palate in a beautiful way. Very puckering. Tons of acid, but not in an aggressive way; it's quite lovely.

My last bottle of this was about two years ago. Not an off bottle as it was delicious but fairly advanced. Brownish color with secondary notes emerging. Still plenty of tannin and acid but packing brightness. Plums, brown sugar, mineral, caramel, aged leather and wet earth.

Lung filling nose of violets, tar, balsam and cool nebbiolo fruit. Terrific perfume. This has weightless intensity. Iron fist in a velvet glove. Structured and beautifully poised. Red and blue fruits, mountain herbs, licorice. In spite of its size, there's an inner calm and sense of effortless. A jewel like clarity and detail. Finishes with firm ripe tannins. Fantastic.

SLDS October 2017: Opened around 8 hours prior. Diesel and tar, cherry and raspberry with plenty of smoky notes as well. Upfront tannins kick along the palate, this has imposing structure with the bold fruit sitting in behind for now. It is well tailored, with the various elements all in place, just requiring more time in order to show off.

Tasted over three nights.

All things raspberry and kumquat perfume the surrounding air upon pulling the cork. Powerful essences of acerola, rhubarb, rose hip, mint, wintergreen, hibiscus, rosemary, rosewater, and light petrol also grace the bouquet. Sleek, refined, and elegant. The bouquet merits 94+ points.

The attack aligns nicely with the bouquet. Then...precisely when hope anticipates an explosion at the mid palate...the wine turns austere, thin even, and reveals a biting linearity. Exceptional Barbaresco, particularly in great vintages, should turn reticently tannic at the middle, an element that should hold and expand through a chewy, gritty, puckering finish. This wine turns lean and green by comparison, thinning out through a finish that imparts a metallic twang, akin to liking galvanized metal.

Nothing changed over three days. In plain terms: seductive bouquet, austere, thin middle, unpleasantly edgy finish.

This offering bolstered my standing impression of the mostly overstated 2016 Nebbiolo offerings from Piemonte. Where they hit, few and far between, Vietti's Castiglione and Vajra's Bricco delle Viole, as examples, they rule! Where they miss, featuring heady bouquets, followed by leanness, austerity, and bite, such as with this, and PdB's Asili and Montefico, they are a waste of good wine budget, and another fine example of professional wine marketers...aka reviewers, who have not a clue. Piemonte had (phenolic or total) ripeness issues in this vintage.

As a marginally related aside: PdB's 2016 AOC label is also overstated, again, apparently on account of its intoxicating bouquet. It cannot, however, hold a candle to Vietti's Castiglione in this vintage.

This wine will evolve and hold through 2035-2040, perhaps longer. It will not, however, turn magical.

Saturday Night in the Hills (DP's, Goose Hollow, Portland OR): This was decanted for about 6 hours before drinking. There was a real expressiveness backed up by a quiet intensity to the tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, a touch of black plum, licorice, tar, crushed rocks, violets, rose petals, and some potpourri. There is a real purity to the nose with a savory and dark fruited take that really draws you in. The Full bodied feel is deep and robust with tart, high acidity along with silky yet extremely youthful, high tannins. This will clearly get better with age as it’s just a puppy dog at the moment. I can certainly see this improving a good bit by the time it hits the 15-20 year mark and easily sail along for years to come.

The aromas are pretty vibrant an intense... quite lovely, with road tar, flowers, and a soft old wet rose you've kept too long in your vase. Really pretty, though. There's also some kind of synthetic, rubber note that I'm not sure what it is. Also have a plum skin note... definitely some different notes here for a young Barolo. On the palate, it's medium bodied, if a bit compact, the acidity does attack well, but the flavors here are light and really not very developed. Certainly on the finish you have that acid hit again with some really fine grained tannins that take over. The tannins are elegant and soft, so I think the wine may drink fairly well on the younger side. The flavors on the finish are raspberries, strawberry seeds... but really the flavors just aren't that well developed at present on the palate or the finish; it's really just all about its compact structure. Certainly has upside here, so 92+.

Barolo Boys Cru Special – Cerretta (Zoom!): 28 mos in big botte. Higher up the hill than Garesio's holding, with the vines facing multiple aspects. Rosso has a consistent traditional style that reflects the terroir of each vineyard; the wines are concentrated but elegant. He ferments at a higher temperature than Garesio.

Very soft on the nose, increasingly floral and herbal with air. It's a more extracted wine than #1, with some sweetness as well as liquorice and chewier tannins. Acidity is higher and there's bitter chocolate towards the finish. A hint of Fernet Branca perhaps - but this is far from a heavy wine, it's increasingly ethereal with air, and my key recollection is of its sensual nose. Mmm - young and needs time. Excellent and may deserve a higher score in the future.

A special lighter style of Barolo that I like very much, so precise, so elegant, floral, etheral, so transparent and multi-layered. Never on the rustic or dusty side that Nebbiolo can show sometimes.

Relatively tight and unyielding at first. begins to crack open, showing a hint of tart cherry and ironstone. With more air there are florals and the fruit intensifies at the wine's core and sweetens up. It is well-balanced and intense, finishing with bright acidity and some tannic chew. Very good but too young.

Beautiful, fine aromatics. Yes, rose petal gets it. Quite open for its age, I suspect reflecting 2013.
Fine, aromatic flavours with the tarry backbone. Very fine tannins and quite a deal of acid holding it. Medium weight.
I expect the approachability now is beguiling - it will age quite a long time.

The nose was spicy, with sweet florals and minerals, tart cherry, wild berry, and brown spices. Over time it became more polished and dark fruited, yet never losing it’s mineral thrust. On the palate, it was dark yet lifted and fresh with notes of wild herbs, blackberry and gruff tannin. Drying over time with youthful tannin, the finish was long and structured, only hinting at fruit. The cerretta will require many years in the cellar to show its best.

Barolo Boys Cru Special – Cerretta (Zoom!): 24 mos in tonneaux. Vines are slightly higher up again on the east side of the cru.

Slightly sharper on the nose, but also deep and sweet, with strawberry candy. Tannins are certainly there, muscular and almost gravelly, but certainly well put together and far from rustic. Really tasty fruit on the finish, and quite herbal too like a vermouth. The oak influence is well integrated.

This is a dark and layered bueaty of a wine, showing crushed stone, black cherry, dried roses, and exotic spice. With time in the glass it gained depth, adding rich raspberry, hints of moist soil and truffle. Displaying mineral-driven, silky textures contrasted by a core of vibrant acidity on the palate. Black cherry, licorice, sweet herbs and menthol all flowed effortlessly across the senses. It finished on fine tannin with dried cherry and inner floral tones lingering long.
