11/18/2020 - MicklethePickle Likes this wine: 95 points

Opened last night and decanted for 24 hours. Very impressive purplish-ruby color. Excellent viscosity. Gorgeous nose just loaded with complex fruit aromas. Shows enormous promise. The promise follows right through onto the palate. Big wine, with strong tannins but tons of crushed berry fruit are well-apparent. This wine has it all: wonderful fruit, power, complexity, length, and personality. Easily the best Meyney I have ever had. It's drinkable (just barely) with a long decant, but clearly its best lies at least ten years down the road, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this last for at least three decades. The reality matches the hype. 5-14-17-9: 95/100.

Decanted overnignight. Lovely ruby-cherry color. Nose shows off good aromatics, with cherry fruit, anise and a hint of sawdust. Lovely piquant cherry and black cherry flavors in a medium-bodied format that is silky but substantial, with good weight on the back end. Consistently one of the best values in high quality Barbaresco, this shows very nicely with the decant. 5-12-16-8: 91/100.

Opened on Thursday, finished on Sunday. Still kicking and not a bit tired, so it should have lots of time ahead. Tonight (Sunday), very solid garnet. Nose is a little reticent, but shows some saddle leather to go with somewhat faint red and black fruit. Nice wine in the mouth, rich and round, won't wow you, but a solid effort and a smoking hot buy at Costco's $16.99. You won't find a Napa cab anywhere near this quality for close to the price. 4-11-16-8: 89/100.

Opened after learning from another CT user that this was drinking well already. I bought three more bottles, then uncorked this. Incredibly saturated black purple with thick purple legs. Wow! Gorgeous deep nose, with ripe (not overly) fruit aromas. Very rich. Extremely attractive in the mouth, sooooo full of thick, rich fruit it is hard to believe. My God, this is one of the best wines I have had in my mouth in as long as I can remember. Fully a minute after swallowing, I am still experiencing all this wine has to offer. The best 2018 I have had thus far, and that is saying ALOT. 5-13-19-10: 97/100.

Opened last night and immediately showed it was a bargain at $16.99 (Costco). Now finishing it up the next night, even stronger. Rich, dark purple-red color. Nose and mouth diverge on this, with the nose more on the floral, red side, and the palate decidedly favoring the dark side. Certainly tannic at this young age, it is still surprisingly drinkable at so young an age. Not ideal drinking, but if you have a big beefy dish, this could work. 5-12-15-8: 90/100.

Opened this last night. Seemed a little out of joint then, not the wine I remembered. That has been largely remedied with airing out in the cellar overnight. Impressive appearance: Viscous black ruby with a red rim and huge tears on the bowl of the glass. Obviously this is very young, but it is already revealing very plush deep purple fruit aromas, so deep they seem infinite. High tannins, but they cannot hide the copious amount of blackberry fruit, umami and soy sauce at the core of this loaded wine. If you have enough of this you could enjoy this with a long decant and hearty meaty dishes, but it will undoubtedly be fabulous thirty or forty years from now. I lament the fact that at 64 years, I am unlikely to be able to enjoy that experience. Gorgeous wine. 5-14-18-9: 96/100.

Still later, more blue fruits coming to the fore.

Popped and poured. Very nice wine, and a real bargain at $28. Dark red with a bit of a brownish, orangey rim. I love the nose on this: bright, fresh, red fruits, including strawberry. Stellar palate, too, with flavors that make my mouth water. Piquant, but nicely ripe and bright, too. Slight dusty tannin on the finish. I really like this wine, and I can see why I bought more after tasting it a few years ago. I want more!!! 5-13-17-9: 94/100. (Probably some will think I overrated this, but it is right in my wheelhouse of everything I like, so I get carried away.) Update: Tasted from same bottle the next day: not better, not worse, so feel free to start drinking this; although it will surely age, I'm not sure there is a great deal more upside.

Found another bottle of this wine in my cellar; thought I had drunk it all, but nope. Lucky me. Opened last night. Rich, deep, dark red. Big legs. Nose is quite pretty, floral, ripe, complex, with lots of red currant fruit and lead pencil. The extra air has really done this wine wonders. Palate is fantastic as well, rich but feminine, sleek yet full, good fruit and spice saturate the palate. This is a beauty, and I can only see it getting better from here. Absolutely one of the best bargains out there in quality Bordeaux. 5-13-16-9: 93/100.

After reading some of the CT reviews, my expectations were pretty high. Alas, they were not met. Don't get me wrong, this is a good wine, but it doesn't hold a candle to the '18 Calon Segur I had a few days ago. I left it open overnight in the cellar hoping that might help, but it did not really make that much difference. The color is an impressive dark, dark red with red stains on the glass, and the nose shows off gravelly, minerally red currant fruit, but the palate is still less than forthcoming. Smooth as silk, but mostly closed. I'm sure this will shine brightly in time, but not at the moment. 5-12-15-9: 91/100 now, with a brighter future.

Popped and poured—too early. Lots lurking here, but currently heavy and ponderous, needing a lot more time to smooth out. Largely mineral-driven at present, with mulberry and blackish fruit. But mostly austere. Wait at least five more years. 4-11-16-8: 89/100.

Popped and poured. This is very nice, especially at its relatively tender age. Rusty red, with more rust at the edge. I'm always surprise how favorably the "cheap" bottling compares with the same producer's much more expensive wines. This is no exception. Nose is rich, with tobacco, red fruit and game. Ripe, tangy, piquant, but bone dry, dusty fruit flavors in the mouth. What a nice wine, showing so well with only a bit of air needed to bring it all out. Very nice. 4-12-17-8: 91/100. Adding a small edit here: My advice to folks who want to build a good Nebbiolo cellar but not spend a fortune doing so: Buy this wine every vintage. It is remarkably reliable, good to great in almost every vintage, and relative to others, sells for a song. Stock up on this and you will be rewarded, both because the price will only increase over time and because the wine is of such high quality.

Opened this last night, at which time it was pretty simple and closed. That has changed. Tonight? Wow! Big dark, opaque red color that stains the glass red. Gorgeous strawberry jam nose, plus raspberries. This is a very rich, full wine with tremendous depth. Loads of fruit and creme de cassis buried a bit behind substantial but not harsh tannins. I read some of the other notes on this last night, and I think they offer great insight. This wine, once a bit further along, will be very special. 5-14-16-8: 93/100. Future potential over 95.

Update: Next day, showing more spice on the nose, including cinnamon.

Opened yesterday. Lovely red color. Excellent legs. Just barely beginning to show lightning at the rim, it clearly has many years to go. The nose is a knockout. Brambly, softly fruity, shows just beautiful oak overtones, with baking spices. Very generous and expressive. Really special in the mouth as well. Excellent fruit, nuanced with pretty vanilla notes. Extremely long and excellent aftertaste. At 40 bucks, this is a wine to buy for drinking now and for many years into the future. Quite a great one. 5-13-18-9: 95/100.

Popped and poured. Another example that confirms my feeling that this is an absolutely fantastic vintage that, regardless of how well it may age, is surprisingly (happily!) approachable already. Gorgeous black-purple with red-purple legs. Very deep, very opaque. Has the gorgeous purple fruit and flowers of so many wines from this vintage. Same story in the mouth. Seems like its going to be dense at first, then becomes quite sleek and glassine. Nice cocoa finish. Suave, sexy stuff. Becoming my favorite vintage in the last 50 years. 5-13-18-9: 95/100.

This was not showing much last night when I opened it, but it is impressive tonight, and is reminding me why I thought this was such a nice bargain Bordeaux when I tasted it for the first time. Deep, concentrated black crimson with purple highlights. Lovely plump berry fruit and cassis in abundance on the nose. Floral and fragrant; good mineral case to the fruit. Ripe, rich, cocoa and red berry fruit in the mouth. Has to be one of the best values still available from this vintage. Be sure to give this a good decant or open it well ahead of drinking; you will be rewarded. 5-13-17-9: 94/100.

So when I popped this last night it was underwhelming. 24 hours later left in the bottle in the cellar, this has gotten better. Rich color; a real harbinger of a good wine. Less charming than the '19 already is, this will probably live longer and should continue to evolve and improve with more time in bottle. At present, a solidly good nose and mouth, with rich mulberry just beginning to show itself. Pretty red fruit too. Not top echelon, but pretty darn good all the same. 5-12-16-9: 92/100. I fully expect this score to increase in a few more years.

Popped and poured, and right from the get-go, a whole different animal from what one would expect. What a sexy, plump, strawberry-jammy, silky, feminine, fruit-bomb of a wine! Yet a wine that avoids being too ripe or fat; just a fabulous expression of [what???????????] So hard to compare this with either Bordeaux or American Cabernet. Calling it "modern" in style does not cover it--this is a wine unique unto itself. It is absolutely open for business, but not especially Bordeaux-like. If I had to pick, I would liken this more to an Italian Bordeaux blend. For me, a one-of-a-kind, and in a good way. 5-13-17-9: 94/100.

PnP. Leggy, fully dark red. Cassis, red currant and mineral combine in the nose to make an impression right off the bat. More burly and tannic in the mouth, not yet open for business. Will taste again tomorrow to see how it opens.

10/22: This has opened somewhat, but it is still not terribly drinkable--maybe with food. Just too tannic and dense for me right now. Score at the moment--which should increase with more bottle age--is, for me: 5-13-16-9: 93:100.

Opened last night, but has evolved only glacially in 20 hours. Looks the part of a great wine: Rich, concentrated, saturated dark red, with bold red legs. Purple, floral, fruity aromas lurk in the nose, but largely cloaked by something at the moment; seems ready to burst, almost. Similar impression in the mouth: loads of fruit currently masked by a high wall of tannin and oak, plus some acid. This needs about five years to really show how nice it can be. For now, better be having some smoked, roasted meat if you opt for drinking before then. 5-12-16-9: 92/100.

Opened last night. This is a massive wine that needs a lot of time. It was too big and tannic last night, 24 hours later it is drinkable. Very attractive dark ruby. Now, the massive wall of tannin has retreated and the nose can really shine. Very attractive, very complex, currant, red and black fruit, graphite, and a nice oak complement. Brooding, smoky. In the mouth it is fab, with a majesty and richness only the really great wines have. Impeccable balance and complexity, with no detectable flaws. This is still huge (there's only so much a little air can do), and it is infanticide to drink now, but the greatness shines through. Put this away for at least five years and you are in for a treat. No doubt the fruit is massive enough to survive the massive tannins and oak. If you want to try this earlier, make sure you have got a helluva good, meaty foil. 5-14-19-10: 98/100.

Popped and poured. Obviously still very young, and three years of CT's recommended beginning drinking date. Still, this is beginning to be approachable, and is even borderline drinkable. More dark purple than anything, it is a dense, rich Bordeaux. One of the darkest seven year-old Bordeaux I have seen. This is all about dark purple fruit at this stage, both nose and mouth. Should turn out very well with about five more years in the cellar. 5-12-16-9: 92/100.

Popped and poured. Continues the string of early-drinking '18s; can't remember many vintages of this quality tasting quite so nice at such a young age. Especially St. Estephe. Very dark garnet, with decent red legs on the bowl of the glass. Nose is young, with quite a bit of dill right off the bat. But there is plenty of nice young, rich fruit apparent as well. Quite approachable in the mouth, does not seem tannic at all, though it has plenty of depth, richness, and body. Rarely have I tasted a Bordeaux of this depth without much more brutal tannin. There is some alcohol in evidence on the finish. I will be very interesting to follow this wine as it develops. Almost an enigma tonight. 5-13-16-8: 92/100.
