Sweet and yummy. On the nose and palate I find strawberries, red cherries, red currant at the core. Silky mouthfeel, good acidity and no flab. I like the red fruity character, but doesn’t have enough complexity. Delicious wine to drink but some may think of Napa. That’s not a bad thing - you may have to spend 2x on similar quality Napa cab.

Bordeaux 2018 - 5 Years On - 7 Reds: Time to check in on some top 2018s, and the initial observations were all confirmed: A) This is obviously the ripest, sweetest Bordeaux vintage in the last decade. While only one wine (Cos d'Estournel, 88pts) was overripe and overdone, two others (Calon Segur - 94pts, Grand Puy Lacoste - 91pts) are not for purists and are quite sweet - at least this young. B) Despite the ripeness, the wines are generally very balanced and harmonious, not as extracted or thick as many 2009/2010s. C) The structural frames are of high quality with ultra-fine tannins and good acid backbones. However, with so many other great vintages produced in recent years, this is not the vintage to chase - especially for purists. The group winner was the highly elegant, seductive yet aristocratic Pichon Lalande (rated 95pts), just ahead of my WOTN, the floral, perfumed, airy Canon (96pts).
TN: Tasted double blind. This is quite a singular wine, exotic, sweet and sexy. On the nose and palate there is an immense aromatic intensity with loads of cranberries, strawberries, red cherries, red currant at the core. Some graphite and a bit of herbs complement the picture. The structure is impeccable with satiny tannins, silky mouthfeel, good acidity and without any excess weight. I appreciate the singularity, I like the red fruity character, the purity/precision is outstanding but this is not a wine for everybody and today is a bit too sweet for me. More age should help here. 93/94pts.
Decanting: Not decanted, no extensive decanting necessary.

Opened two nights ago. Only a small glass left. Of course it sports the gorgeous purple-ruby color we all love so much. Nose quite excellent, with cassis and purple fruit, though more reticent than I would have expected. Stupendously rich and concentrated in the mouth, this is a big, big boy. Grabs all your attention and doesn't let go. Seems bigger and less approachable than it did only a couple months ago. Could be closing up a bit. I won't be touching another bottle for awhile. 5-12-17-9: 93/100.

Really liked this wine. Better than 2009 Cantenac Brown and 2013 Rust en Vrede. Although the Rust was up there I think the calon showed a more modern cab forward palate that aligned with mine. Great with steak

Part of a small Bordeaux 2018 5-years on tasting. The wines were partially served single-blind. Main observations: 1/ the vintage pairs concentration and ripeness with weightless and elegant structures. 2/ tannins are generally finely grained and well-integrated. 3/ Extraction levels managed well with only 1 instance of heat and no overripe fruit. 4/ Best bottles were Canon and Pichon Longueville.
Tasting note: Tasted single-blind. A herbal layer nicely underpinned a ripe and sweet fruit profile of red and dark cherry. Soapy floral complexity. Maybe a tad meaty, too, and definitely a mineral layer. Balanced and harmonious with satin texture. Structured and dense, leaving no gaps from attack to finish. This has to potential to be one of the best ever made up until this vintage.
