1999 Caymus Cabernet SauvignonNapa Valley more |
6/11/2010 - sirswami wrote: 92 pointsCurrently drinking as a wonderful example of the Caymus style... Bubbling cherry pie flavors on the nose, beautiful deep garnet color and lush dark fruit flavors that dominate as time passes. Some spicy oak flavors accent but don't overwhelm during a long finish. Outstanding... |

2/3/2013 - sirswami wrote: 92 pointsConsistent with a forecast in the previous tasting note from 2010, this wine has held up very well and the fruit is lively, sweet and interesting. Favor tones of dark cherry licorice resonate but do not overwhelm, an impressive offering. |

3/31/2013 - sirswami wrote: 90 pointsI found this wine to be very good and did not walk away thinking it was running out of runway in the cellar. It presented as being well made with the balance and grace that I've grown to expect from this producer but it didn't really grab me as something special (which I had anticipated given the vintage). 1 person found this helpful, do you? 3/31/2013 - sirswami wrote: 88 pointsTacked this wine on to a string of very good Bordeaux style reds and walked away thinking its younger, greener and more mineral elements make it better suited for the beginning of the rotation than the end - still intrigued by how this wine will evolve over time. |

8/25/2011 - sirswami wrote: 91 pointsI don't have a detailed review beyond it being lush, dark and really enjoyable. In my opinion, it presents and drinks as well as many of the better known Spanish reds selling at 1.5 to 2 times its price point... |

12/1/2011 - sirswami wrote: 97 pointsMy rating may be the highest I have ever offered... This rare wine was a spectacular find at an area wine merchant and the centerpiece of a wonderful birthday dinner at MPD in NYC. Writing this more than a week after consumption significantly hampers my ability to offer details but the wine had an absolutely engulfing nose, rich appearance and silky finish that went on forever...truly special. |

11/7/2011 - sirswami wrote: 90 pointsNice - clean and crisp up front but with a very interesting and enjoyable flavor profile featuring green apple, pear, and honeydew melon that steadily emerges (consistent with other more detailed notes). My bottom line is that this is an excellent adventure at a very reasonable price point... |

2005 Salvestrin Cabernet Sauvignon Salvestrin Estate VineyardSt. Helena more |
3/6/2010 - sirswami wrote: 86 pointsI need to taste again to confirm impressions but something was out of sync with this wine versus previous experiences with other vintages. The wine seemed more extracted and pungent than a typical Salvestrin creation and had a strange cherry cough syrup twang on the finish. However, there were flickers of something really interesting lurking here and I will give it some more air next time to sort itself out... |

4/8/2010 - sirswami wrote: 89 pointsA well structured and complex Merlot with assistance from some small amounts of Cabernet and Petite Verdot. Red-fruit flavors jump out with highlights of red currant and sweet cherry with coffee undertones that seem to linger. A quality pour as it should be given its price tag. |

11/19/2011 - sirswami wrote: 86 pointsI finally paired this wine better (in a typical white wine role accompanying seafood pasta) and it drank well enough to call it a favorable experience. It's made to be a lighter and really different red than the rest of the Cakebread lineup, a BBQ or picnic wine by design. I'd suggest giving it a try if you run across a bottle at a modest price but in a very different role than you typically assign a Cakebread red... |

11/9/2013 - sirswami wrote: 91 pointsAs anticipated in my note of two years ago, this wine did improve very nicely with time in the cellar and I think this story is likely to continue. 1/22/2011 - sirswami wrote: 89 pointsI think the pieces may be all here but it may need more time in the cellar or at least in the decanter to let them present in more impressive fashion. It just seemed like there was a very good foundation to this wine but a flavor portfolio that was constrained by its youth (and not aided by my decision to nearly pop and pour)...wouldn't be surprised by a more explosive experience down the road and a considerably higher score. |

2006 Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) Los Vascos Grande RéserveColchagua Valley Red Blend more |
3/6/2011 - sirswami wrote: 89 pointsGiven the heritage and reputation of the producers, I thought I had found a steal for under $15/bottle...that is, until I read the few downbeat CT notes. So after lamenting the purchase for a year, I decanted a bottle and left it alone for a couple of hours before a nice steak dinner. Don't know if it was a function of low expectations, some time in the cellar and decanter, or small sample size for the CT rating but this wine provided a nice surprise and quality experience. Color and aroma were impressive (deep, inviting and sweeter on the nose than anticipated) with medium plus body and a very interesting palate of flavors with some I don't even typically enjoy (light mint and licorice) folded in well with richer tones. All said, very glad I purchased and will seek more... |
