This is nice for the price; you taste the Grenache and the fruit; slightly drying finish

May improve a bit more with cellar time - has good fruit left and loads of tannins and acidity

Wonderfully complex on the nose with cooked black fruits, tobacco, liquorice, chocolate, and tobacco. A little bit less intense on the palate and a bit of a short finish. Mostly tertiary and drinking well now. Probably wouldn't keep it much longer.

85% Grenache and 15% Syrah. Color appears very dark (probably because of the Syrah) but the nuances change to light garnet at the rim of glass. Thick and viscous in the glass, and with an ABV of 15% this only makes sense. The nose is powerful and intense with jammy notes of figs and baked plums and green herbs like thyme and rosemary. All the above also shows on the palate and combined with sweet alcohol and a finish almost equal infinity this wine is clearly NOT fooling around. Big, huge and powerful!

Wow... I’m quite stunned and shocked by the overall quality of this wine. Very powerful but yet insanely juicy. The nose just blows me away... With Beaucastel as master Yoda it’s no wonder Philippe Gimels wines shines like a newly polished penny. Lush and juicy red fruit beautifully woven together with powerful, sweet and intense dark fruit. Goddamn this taste good!!!!

A Southern Rhone wine that ages gracefully and comes with a compelling price tag. The wine displays a rosy hue. It has medium legs and light sediment present in the bottle. On the nose, there are aromas of black currant (cassis), minerals, dust, and stoniness. The palate echoes these flavors with pronounced black currant (cassis), stoniness, and mineral notes. The body leans towards medium/full, and it has a leathery texture. It finishes with a medium length and exhibits low acidity.

Complex nose of mid red fruit mixed with spice, flowers, roasted meats. Palate took little more time to open up. Balanced and long, tannins nearly resolved and what is left is sweet and round. Good food wine.

Visible label. Decanted one hour. Poured in Zalto glass at 14°C. Nice golden hue, surprising for a young vintage. Nose of baked apples and rhubarb in jam. Palate noble and mature with compote liccorice and a nice touch of blond tobacco. Very silky texture with its complex core makes it elegant and appealing. Few potential of ageaning, no/few need for decanting. Excellent like that.

Beautiful, concentrated ruby with soft, clear edges. Low viscosity and sporadic legs. Aromas of plum, blackberry, cocoa, and licorice with some earthy forest floor. Palate is gentle on entry with moderate acidity and finely grained tannins. Dark fruit is complimented with roasted cinnamon and clove. Finish is long, tart, and drying. Quite lovely with a meal and on its own. Paired with ratatouille and herb roasted chicken thighs.

2018 Saint Jean du Barroux Ventoux La Pierre Noire

Grenache Blend, Grenache more

7/5/2022 - originalverkorkt Likes this wine: 94 points

A cuvée of Grenache (around 85%) and Syrah from black rock. The yields are just 15 hl/ha. They were fermented spontaneously with stems and stalks for 15 days, aged in concrete, enamel tanks and used barrels. According to Philippe Gimel, the potential of the wine is 20 years.

almost opaque garnet red

The 2018 La Pierre Noire is a spicy wine, combining underbrush and crushed rock with a dark fruit. Here, the high proportion of Grenache provides notes of liquorice, plums and black raspberries, while the Syrah contributes black cherries, blackberries, graphite, leather and a hint of black pepper. There are also notes of yeast, black olives and sweet dates. They meet pipe tobacco and thyme.

Philippe Gimel has again managed with impressive clarity in 2018 to give this powerhouse, bursting with sweet dark fruit, a structure of lively acidity and fine tannin. Added to this is the deep minerality that is evident here. Licorice, graphite, undergrowth and garrigue combine with plums, blackberries, cassis as well as wild raspberries and are accompanied by cool stony notes. The long finish brings plenty of liquorice in addition to the dark fruit, it seems long and is densely woven, warm and sensual.

Syrah more

7/5/2022 - originalverkorkt Likes this wine: 93 points

This pure Syrah comes from the Saint-Jean parcel, located at 350 metres on the north side of Mont Ventoux. The rock is from the third period of the Oligocene with stony clay soils. The grapes were hand-picked on 3 September 2020, 90% destemmed and fermented in concrete cuve for twelve days. This was followed by ageing in stainless steel for eleven months and in bottle for nine months. 2,037 bottles were produced.

Lightly transparent purple red with brightening rims.

The 2020 Saint-Jean shows slightly reductive notes at the start with a little smoke, peat, raw meat and undergrowth. Then it gets fruitier with boysenberries, blackberries and plums. Despite the undoubtedly ripe fruit, the Syrah certainly seems cool, firm and crisp.

On the palate, the Syrah oscillates between a demanding and a charming side. Demanding here is the firmness of the still young wine, which, however, develops and opens up when caraffed. The tannin is ripe and juicy. The fruit is just as juicy, which also appears firm and crisp due to the comparative coolness of the high and north-facing site. The sweet extract and the ripe fruit core, the present but silky acidity and the fine yeast note that swirls with the fruit prove to be charming. It is a Syrah in the making, but one that holds great potential.
