2019 O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Well made and a bit much in some aspects, but the finish sails on. Blackberries, cassis, currants and crushed rock. Full with body. If you enjoy ripe, bigger Napa, you will love this. Enjoyable and not meek, with obvious dimension. Velvety tannins. Drink now - 2033.

Blind. Brought by Rey to tonight's event. One hour slow ox beforehand.

Dark ruby in the glass. Nose of vanilla and red fruit and almost cotton candy.

Palate displays a soft mouthfeel, which I did not expect from this young wine. Increased acid and tannins on the back end....as it gets more air over 2-3 hours of slow ox, it actually gets sweeter but the acidity and tannins back off a bit. Maybe this one just needs more time?

Served blind. Brought by HMC to our event this night. 3 hour decant.

Classic Napa Cab nose. Showing lots of age in the glass, a light to medium garnet. Looks like it could be an '01 or '03 so no way of knowing how this one was stored all these years as HMC got it at auction a few months ago.

Cedar and red currant on the nose. Palate is fully resolved. This one is drinking older than other bottles I have had in the past year. Smooth, regal and red fruited. It's beautiful, but weakens a bit later in the evening with too much airtime. Just goes to show you how storing bottles can make a big difference in how they drink down the road.....

Opens up well. Not as sharp as a Bordeaux to me, which I mean as a compliment. Nicely balanced, will be interesting to try in a year but drinking nicely now. 92.5.

Blind. Just goes to show you what air does to a wine......

5 hour slow ox by James prior to tonight's event. Another 3 hours of slow ox during our event.

Medium to dark garnet in the glass. Big whiff of alcohol to start and for most of the evening. High acid and a short finish early on. Seems VERY out of balance. Lots if burn, which I don't like. 93 at best early on?

Funny thing is....as this gets more air it deepens, darkens and improves....a lot, and comes into balance. 97 by the end of the night but you need to give this one plenty of air. A good 5 hour full decant is probably best at this point in time, otherwise you have to give it an 8 hour slow ox. This might have been a 98 with more time in the glass, but we ran out!

Blind tasting against two other similar wines

Came in Third of three

1 hour open

Nose is rich, dark, slightly high toned, floral violet notes, acetone notes.

Palate starts rich but goes off the tart end quite a bit. Maybe this bottle is off.
Finishes a little tart and dry.

Beautiful deep, dark ruby wine that starts with a nose of tobacco, oak, vanilla, dark fruits - blackberry, black cherry. The initial taste is bold, with high acidity and medium to high tannins. Medium body. Long bold finish.

Once again this wine is a tremendous effort. Not very aromatic with hard to locate fruits on the nose but i get apple slices and a steely background. In mouth there are pineapple and sweet lemon flavors. The wine has a fair amount of acidity. Finish is fairly well balanced between fruit and acidity.

Benefitted from a 90 minute decant, 60 F. Rich sweet blackberry fruit on the nose with smokey vanilla and anise notes. Low acidity, no noticeable heat, oak needs some more time to integrate. Pleasant tannins with just a touch of velvety grip. Big, sweet black fruits on the palate, blueberry, dried oak. Drying finish of medium length. I will try to hold off for 2 years before I open my next bottle.

Nose: concentrated purple and black fruit, juicy plum, vanilla, dry California brush, and a slight umami core I can’t place.

Taste: much less sweet than the nose might imply. Blueberry, vanilla, cigar box, concentrated herbs. Stiff tannins. Strong Rutherford dust. Light pyrazine (in a complementary, not overpowering way).

Really delicious wine.

1. Appearance
Clarity: Clear
Intensity: Deep
Color: Deep garnet
Core vs. Rim Development: The core is almost opaque, transitioning to a slightly lighter garnet at the rim, indicating some maturity.

2. Nose
Condition: Clean
Intensity: High
Aroma/Bouquet:
Fruit: Blackcurrant, black cherry, plum
Flower: Hints of violet and a touch of lavender
Earth: Traces of tobacco and a leather-like aroma
Mineral: Not distinctly mineral
Wood: Cedar, clove, and vanilla from oak aging

3. Palate
Sweetness: Dry
Acidity: Medium
Tannin: High, firm but ripe
Flavor Character:
Fruit: Rich and concentrated dark fruits like blackcurrant and black cherry, with some plum
Flower: Floral undertones are subtle but add complexity
Earth: Earthy elements such as tobacco and hints of graphite
Mineral: Subtle mineral background, adding to the structure
Wood: Pronounced oak influence providing vanilla, spice, and a hint of smokiness

Body/Alcohol: Full-bodied with a robust alcohol content, well integrated
Length: Long, with lingering dark fruit flavors and warm spicy finish
Conclusion

Quality with Respect to Price: Gamble Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is known for its quality and complexity, generally offering good value for its price point within the premium Napa Cabernet category.

Maturity with Respect to Ageing: This wine is capable of aging well, developing more nuanced earthy and spicy characteristics over time. It can be enjoyed now but will benefit from further cellaring.

Food and Wine Pairing: Ideal with rich meat dishes such as steak, lamb, or braised beef. Its tannic structure and flavor profile also make it suitable for pairing with aged cheeses.

Decanted 1hr. Think this ‘12 still has plenty of life to it. The alcohol is there but doesn’t overwhelm the late finish.Black fruit primary , wet stone , earthy , medium tannins, good acid . Good time to open over the next year but no rush.

Cherry, Strawberry, toasted oak, chocolate, a faint smell of grape tootsie roll pop.

Not a bad attempt at a bordeaux style blend (with the addition of Zinfandel) but a little over priced.

Would benefit from decanting and ageing. Goes well with red meat.

4/26/2024 - Vinnut Likes this wine: 92 points

Deep dark reddish-purple almost opaque in color. Full, forward, & fragrant aromas of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & cassis with overtones of dusty/earthy & floral notes, herbs, olives, anise, pepper, cocoa, minerals, leather & hints of oak/vanilla in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with cocoa, herbs, minerals & a note of vanilla/oak. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing (90 min+) but should develop further with additional aging at which time it may merit a higher score (93+). Very good QPR. A classically styled & reasonably priced Napa Cabernet in stark contrast to the modern manufactured, overpriced & overripe vanilla/oak frankenwines.

Popped and poured, then sipped over the next few hours. Initially cellar temp, gradually warmed up to 60 F. I don't think this would benefit from a warmer temperature. Deep ruby color. Sweet black cherry on the nose with vanilla and milk chocolate. Hints of clove and dried leather. Soft dusty, drying tannins which gradually moved to a silky, but still drying, texture. Well-integrated acidity that may be starting to fade. No noticeable heat, good use of charred oak regimen. Medium-bodied for a Napa Cab. Tart blackberry fruit, black cherry, savory plum on the palate with cedar, dark chocolate, earth, minerals and licorice. Medium-length drying finish. Red meat friendly. Good QPR. Probably at its peak, so drink soon.
