The elegance continues onto the palate where the medium to full body is lifted by a lovely fresh acidity. Long, evolving finish through black fruit and sweet spices. Will only get better with more time in bottle.

2016 Château Meyney

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/25/2023 - Irish_Wine Likes this wine: 92 points

A vibrant crimson in the glass, the 2016 Meyney is shy and tightly wound straight out of the bottle. With air, the wine opens to an elegant nose with a core of rich blackcurrant crumble together with layers of mint, cinammon, cigar box and potting soil. Structured and classy on the palate with some milk chocolate and fragrant spice notes and a long, evolving finish.

If drinking at this stage, a long decant is advised but laying this lovely wine down for a few more years will be well rewarded. Lots of potential for improvement.

Glad I got to try this after an issue with the first bottle.

WSET notes:

Deep ruby.

Pronounced on the nose with violet, blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite, mint, cedar, chocolate, tobacco, cinnamon and earth. Developing.

Pronounced and dry on the palate with some blueberry coming through. High tannins, high alcohol, medium plus body, medium plus acidity, long finish.

Deep inky purple colour. Very intense!

Pronounced intensity and very jammy on the nose with blackberry jam, some herbal notes and something almost reminiscent of mead.

Very juicy on the palette, medium plus acidity, interesting medium plus tannins which seem to coat the tongue, medium body, medium finish.

An interesting, easy drinking and juicy wine. Interesting to try a single variety Alicante bouschet but no real complexity or depth.
