2011 Cayuse Syrah En Cerise Vineyard

Walla Walla Valley more

5/24/2024 - JPF16 Likes this wine: 94 points

Glass: Deep Ruby/Purple with a hint of bricking

Nose: Very unique, a combination of book smell (went and opened a cookbook to confirm) and gunpowder... no predominant fruit (red or black) but there was certainly fruit on the nose...just nothing standing out.

Palate: Thick, coats the mouth. Sweet on the front end. Lots of fruit still around, nice acidity. A bit on the cherry/tangy side. Finishes well, with a small amount of bitter (oak?) on the finish. Definitely New World and not Aussie.

I think this still has an upside at 13 years...

Tom's Amazing Ribs & Some Good Wines (Edina, MN): Day 1: One of the more interesting wines of the year so far. Herbal along with green olives, white pepper, spices, blue fruits, dust and tar. Super complex wine with a super long finish. Outstanding and bringing to an event tonight. 94+ points
Day 1.5: Small glass before showing up at the event and 4 hours later after decanting showing similar form. This really could be drink now stages as while it may improve I don't see much more than 95 points. White pepper, green olives, blueberries, raspberries, fresh cut herbs, tar and dust. Super complex effort and worthy of wine of the night. 94 points
Recommendation: Great value under $100 via auction.

Decanted for an hour

Wasn’t much funk, which surprised me since other Cayuse I had had such funk.

The smell opened up as night progressed with smoky meaty flavor.

The taste was closed off through the night. Tart cherry , some chocolate. Not much fruit. Maybe should have decanted longer, but not sure it would come around

Tannins are perfectly integrated, polished with excellent balance. Definitely prominent berries, both blueberries and some dark cherries. Great wine and no reason to wait.

Whelp. This is certainly in a good spot. Moderate hue, deep ruby, clear throughout. Aromas are obviously Syrah and Cayuse at that; think holiday ham, kalamata olives, mocha, mild herbaceous funk and hints of berries, the latter note growing with aeration. Moderate body. Although the tannins still have a bit of a chalky edge, this wine is super well-balanced and smooth with a lovely core of dark fruits, fruit leather and vegetal notes on the palate. Lengthy close. Seems like it's really in the zone, should provide perfect drinking over the next 3-5 years while lasting far longer in a cool cellar.

From magnum, 90 min decant; Barnyard funk, saline, red and black berry fruits, hints of espresso and mineral. This has an almost creamy texture and is drinking quite well. Definitely a hit at the party. Drink now - 2033.

Ruby red in color. 13.6% ABV. Pretty nose of red fruits, olive brine, gamey meats and sea salt. Medium body with medium acidity. Warm, supple and elegant. Strawberry, kirsch, roasted herbs and bacon fat on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Beautiful Grenache that is full of grace and class. Best over the next 2-4 years.

2018 Cayuse Tempranillo Impulsivo En Chamberlin Vineyard

Walla Walla Valley more

A tale of 2 Tempranillo pt 2 -- but other than the black cherry base, I can't really pick out the variety from the Cayuse sour red cabbage stylings from their yeast or trickery or whatever that is. Thoroughly delicious for the post meal, pre dessert selection; it would have worked with the meatballs as well but the older LdH was the right call for the meal. Maybe I should have held one of these Impulsivos longer term but they all fell victim to impulse one by one, here's an extra-good wine that can't miss. But I'm not going to restart buying this direct, either.

What sets this unique (and never to be created again) Grenache apart is its depth and nuance, achieved through the careful blending of wines from three different harvests—56% 2013, 24% 2014, and 20% 2015. By blending across vintages, Elizabeth and Christophe have created a wine that transcends the limitations of any single year, offering a unique expression of Grenache that is both timeless and captivating.

Upon opening, this was a little leaner and tighter than expected. Nice colour, young. Tight and a little tannic, needs air. Will revisit.

update after an hour or so open. much better. some cayuse funk, meatiness bacon and olives beginning to show. still not at the level of the syrahs and a good reminder of why i cut purchases of this off.

i would not pull this wine out to impress guests, but it is plenty tasty.
