2019 Domaine du Chapitre Regent Saint-Rémi

Vin de pays des Jardins de Wallonie more

100% Regent from a vineyard planted in 2013. Aged for 12 months in French oak barriques. 12% alcohol.

Youthful, luminous ruby-red color. The nose feels sweet, open and somewhat dark-toned with quite intense aromas of blueberries, some vanilla oak, a little bit of dark plummy fruit, light strawberry tones, a hint of cloves, a touch of sweet oak spice and a whiff of crème de cassis. The wine feels firm, sinewy and somewhat polished on the palate with a medium body and intense, rather glossy and quite oak-driven flavors of vanilla and sweet oak spice, some ripe blackcurrant tones, a little bit of blueberry juice, light notes of fresh dark plums, a hint of clove and a touch of brambly black raspberry. The wine could be a rich, oaky crowdpleaser wine if it weren't for its surprisingly lean structure - all thanks to its bright, zippy and quite incisive acidity and light yet surprisingly grippy medium-minus tannins. The finish is dry, crunchy and slightly grippy with a rather long, acid-driven aftertaste of tart lingonberries and fresh dark plums, some vanilla tones, a little bit of cloves and other sweet oak spices, light bilberry tones, hints of ripe cranberries and wild strawberries and a touch of crème de cassis.

This could've been a rather nice wine, if it weren't for the somewhat overdone oak impact, which renders the wine rather sweet and glossy. The overall feel here is wonderfully firm, crunchy and enjoyably acid-driven with surprisingly vibrant fruit intensity. The lush oaky notes just transform the wine into something sweet, boring and anonymous - more like a dry mulled wine. I guess letting the wine age for some years more might help integrating some of that oak a little bit better, but I doubt any amount of aging is enough to integrate all that oak. Priced somewhat according to its quality at 17,50€.

4th Saturday Group: Uptown Brown Bag (V&M's): Double blind. Stark. Grassy elements dominate the nose and palate. The fruit is a bit lean. Guessed domestic sauv blanc. (V&M)

Candied fruit, but in an extraordinary way. On the nose. Tight and more forceful on the palate. Frisky. Tastes like day two and indeed, it is on day two.

Interesting blend of Merlot, Syrah and Marselan. Fruit-forward, sweet fruit, warm and spicy, licorice, meaty, very soft tannins, easy-drinking. Not very complex, but a tasty wine and excellent qpr. - 88 points

Still drinking well, despite 11 years of age and despite a plastic cork. Lots of sweet licorice flavors, soft texture but surprisingly good weight, high alcohol and not a lot of acidity. A bit of a funky note on the finish. But not bad at all. - 87 points

Surprisingly, this bottle from vintage 2007 was still very drinkable despite having a synthetic cork closure. Full of mature dried and candied fruit flavors, mix of red and dark berries, quite spicy, a hint of roasted barrel, soft tannins and medium acidity. Quickly oxidized with air contact, but right out of the bottle this was a fine food wine for Southern French cuisine. - 88 points

Medium garnet in color, this wine (Grenache/Cinsault/Syrah) reveals dark raspberry, wild strawberry and minerals on the nose. The mouth feel was fuller-bodied with iron, anise and approachable tannins. The finish was well balanced with defined mineral undertones. 13.5% abv.

Purchased for $11US, this is an outstanding qpr that clearly shows its place of origin. Paired perfectly with medium rare burgers from my grill tonight.

I really wanted to love this wine. I tasted it with the winemaker Frederic Dorthe of Domaine du Chapitre. I found notes of strawberry, raspberry, cherry, a little spice and some earth - but everything was too light and too short to recommend it. On sale for $10.80 / bottle - and we are always looking for tasty, inexpensive Rhone wines - but this was a pass. I preferred the white wine being poured.

Malbec from the Loire. Near opaque ruby. P&P. First day; Muted plum, bit of acitone and vanilla on the nose. Taste; Crunchy plum with slight bitter edge, a bit of earthiness, a touch of sour berry & fine grippy tannins to finish. Decent components but disjointed. Score low 80s.

Next day: A tad more harmonious but much the same. Then cooked myself a chunk of Tuna. Wow, this is a food wine. Completely smoothed out and came together with velvety tannins. Scored for food. £12

A lovely bright melon and tomato leaf nose that is so fresh it could give you hayfever! The palate is fuller than I expected but with the usual flavours of gooseberry and tropical fruit. Not too dry and nicely refreshing.

This wine from the Languedoc stems from the Domaine du Chapitre, a research winery of the French agrarian Institute INRA, where the varietal Marselan was created in 1961. It is a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache Noir.
The color is very dark and the nose shows dark fruits, Xmas spices and licorice. On the palate the wine is warm and still quite tannic. The flavor profile is dominated by licorice and dark fruits. There is bitter chocolate and a bloody note on the finish. Overall lacking harmony and feshness, it comes across a bit dull, but it is cetrainly a unique wine from an interesting varietal with potential. It might work better as a blending partner though. - 82 points
