2006 Fattoria Zerbina Marzieno Rosso Ravenna IGT

Sangiovese more

I have drunk a few previous vintages of this wine many years ago but always way too young. I thought that at nearly 18 years this bottle would have mellowed, but there still remain a small but noticeable amount of bitter tannins. Poweful but not particularly deep on the palate. Pleasant and interesting enough, mainly on the nose. I'm sure it will last a few more years, but I don't see much potential for improvement.

Drank with a family dinner of pasta and meat sauce.
Much better after 2 hours open, and glass difference was striking after that time - best out of the big goblet.
Nose is full of fruit (raspberry, currant) and a hint of citrus zest and baking spice.
V notices distinct smell of bell pepper underneath.
Medium bodied, with strong tannins (a tiny bit too strong perhaps, "only if I'm being real picky and shit" says V) and moderate acidity. Finish is long but a touch astringent (tannins). Solid, not soaring.

Romagna 2023: Di colore rubino, intenso e impenetrabile.

more

1/27/2024 - Clemster wrote: NR

The Torre di Ceparano comes from multiple clones of ad alberello (bush-trained) Sangiovese Piccolo, along with about 8% Merlot and 2% Ancellotta. The wine fermented and macerated for eighteen days in stainless steel, then matured in a mix of barriques and 600-liter barrels for fifteen months. In the glass, the wine has a dark, super-saturated, cherry-red color that warms to garnet at the edge. Aromas of amarena cherries, sun-warmed black plums, caramelized shallots, and cuoio fiorentino (the fine Florentine leather always called to mind in the aromatics of fine Sangiovese) emerge when the wine is first poured, with suggestions of toasted bay laurel, rosemary, and creamy prosciutto as the nose evolves in the glass. On the palate, the wine is warm and Pinot Noir-like, with a tobacco-seasoned core of red and black fruit flavors that echoes the nose, refined by the very judicious spicy oak, which seems to give the wine an almost creamy texture. Limestone minerality and dusty walnut-skin tannins mark the long softly spicy finish. Drink now–2029

2022 Fattoria Zerbina Albana di Romagna Bianco di Ceparano Secco

Albana di Romagna DOCG more

12/5/2023 - Clemster wrote: NR

According to Cristina Geminiani, Albana is “certainly the most original” variety in Emilia-Romagna, not to mention that Albana di Romagna (now Romagna Albana) was the first white D.O.C.G. in Italy. In the glass, the wine has a pale, shimmering green-gold color, with flashes of platinum on the swirl. Aromas of ripe orchard fruit, including fresh golden apples and green pears, along with ripe honeydew, star anise, and lemon blossoms emerge when the wine is first poured, adding flat leaf parsley, lemon curd, and wet gravel, as the nose evolves in the glass. On the palate, the wine is bright, sunny, and refreshing, with an insistent lime-citrus element that seasons the generous core of orchard fruit, along with aromatic suggestions of honeycomb and just underripe pineapple. Palpable saline minerality and green peach-skin tannins mark the decidedly lemony finish, “che pulisce la bocca,” in the words of my colleague, Dr. Joseph DiLuzio. Drink now–2025

Popped and poured. Intense tertiary notes on the nose (old leather, dust, dried mushrooms) but equally intense black licorice; which I'm sure was there 30 years ago. You have to dig for fruits but there are a fair bit of dried red cherries and strawberries. Flavors consistent with the aromas and just as intense, which is nice. Things became muted after about an hour in the glass; but not terribly so.

No tannin; but some acid hanging on. Medium + body with the structure that carried this for 32 years. Drink now...and make sure to pop and pour!

2014 Fattoria Zerbina Tergeno Ravenna IGT

Chardonnay Blend, Chardonnay more

1/9/2021 - originalverkorkt Likes this wine: 91 points

The Tergeno is a pure Albana (earlier vintages also had Chardonnay in them). Tergeno is a late harvest style cuvée with a small percentage of late harvested grapes affected by botrytis, which by no means make the wine heavy, but very expressive. Albana is in a class of its own and can be vinified from light and sparkling to dry and residual sweet to Sauternes or TBA style wines. It also does very well with maceration. What I particularly like about it is the texture it offers. And it is exactly this concise texture that the Tergeno shows. There are white flowers here, some anise and actually cardamom, citrus along with peel, substance and a supporting acidity. A good finish with the pears and the freshness together.

2015 Fattoria Zerbina Sangiovese di Romagna Torre Di Ceparano

1/26/2021 - fhayek Likes this wine: 88 points

Beautiful nose; unmistakably Sangiovese, but it a sedusive and exotic way, complemented by quality wood (chestnut?) - wow.

In the mouth, very homogenous, less animalic than the typical Tuscan Sangiovese, more on the smooth side of things. Right upon opening the after-taste is missing but I'm sure that will come with air.

Update: I like this one - not terribly sophisticated but it has depth without being heavy, is homogenous and has a kind of elegance about it.

Price of ca. 13 EUR is perfectly OK; I'd say slighly better than averge.

UPDATE: one day after opening, this is still okay, but it has faded into a simpler, much more trivial wine, 86-ish. So - drink up on day of opening.

Chocolate bomb. Seems to have high alcohol. Bottle seems fine to me. Probably the strongest chocolate bottle I’ve had ever drinking wine.
2nd night deep dark cherries are dominant. Chocolate is gone. I was thinking last night there is more RS in this wine. Sweeter than normal. What is normal anyways. Probably gets hot in Emilia-Romagna, or perhaps it the winemakers style.

IWS Rest of Northern Italy tasting (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. A little cork taint masquerading as cellar stink over ripe black fruits, cream, a little caramle and vanilla and plenty of sweet spcie, liquorice, a little leather and dried out and dried fruit - raisins in support. medium plus intensity acidity, chewy tannins, alcohol warmth, dark hued fruits, leathery notes, vanilla, cream, the tannins are, perhaps, a little woody. Lovely but that sneaky little touch of cork taint says drink up on this bottle...

Popped and poured...lovely blackcurrant and cherry notes backed by a little oak and a fair lick of acidity. Tannins are still very present and grippy and chalky textured. I must confess my expectations were fairly low but this was pretty good.
