Pleasant and interesting enough, mainly on the nose. I'm sure it will last a few more years, but I don't see much potential for improvement. |

On the palate, the wine is warm and Pinot Noir-like, with a tobacco-seasoned core of red and black fruit flavors that echoes the nose, refined by the very judicious spicy oak, which seems to give the wine an almost creamy texture. Intense tertiary notes on the nose (old leather, dust, dried mushrooms) but equally intense black licorice; which I'm sure was there 30 years ago. You have to dig for fruits but there are a fair bit of dried red cherries and strawberries. Flavors consistent with the aromas and just as intense, which is nice. Things became muted after about an hour in the glass; but not terribly so. |

Tergeno is a late harvest style cuvée with a small percentage of late harvested grapes affected by botrytis, which by no means make the wine heavy, but very expressive. Albana is in a class of its own and can be vinified from light and sparkling to dry and residual sweet to Sauternes or TBA style wines. It also does very well with maceration. What I particularly like about it is the texture it offers. And it is exactly this concise texture that the Tergeno shows. There are white flowers here, some anise and actually cardamom, citrus along with peel, substance and a supporting acidity. A good finish with the pears and the freshness together. |
