2023 Hoddles Creek Riesling Wickhams Road Yea Valley

more

Lovely, albeit not the flavour profile I had anticipated, though having never tried a Wickhams or any Yarra Riesling before, not sure why I had any expectations. Green apple, both the fruit itself and an additional sorbet character on the finish. Body, weight. Touch of green herbs, which in the presence of the almost lactic body reminds me of Frankfurter Grüne Sosse. Heaps of length. Frankly I could drink this by the pint glass, though it is far too fine to deserve such treatment. Wouldn’t argue with 93.

Hitting its window in my opinion. More resolved than last time and put on a little more palate weight by night two, indicating some development still left. It’s not as good as the 2015, but still a lovely wine.

Hmm - not completely convinced by the bottle. PnP - felt a little past its best initially. It did open up a bit after 30 mins or so, and everyone else seemed to enjoy it.

A bit of reductive struck match on the nose, but underneath lots of grapefruit and slightly underripe white peach. Still light to mid weight palate in a Chablis style, white peach, minerally and nice fresh acidity. Well put together chardonnay with real finesse, though in the end May lacking in real, fruit depth, but for the price, a real bargain

Bright red, nose of sour cherries, cranberries, notes of black tea leaves, mixed spice; on the palate huge sour cherry, almost granny smith apple flavours, red berry flavours on the finish. Light weight, big acid, light tannins... probably needs another 12 months... won't be a long lived pinot, one of those for the fridge 30 mins before decant (aggressively!) And some nice soft cheese or, as we did, slow cooked lamb shank pizza. Too early for a score but will after 6-12 months with future bottles. Even now, good QPR at $20AUD

nice nose made up of mainly stonefruits with a bit of vanilla from the oak. Really well balanced and great drinking for the price.

My first time trying this wine. The clue is in the name Syberia that Hoddles Creek have made a cooler climate style here than their estate and 1er labels.
I worried that the fruit might be austere and tart, lacking ripeness, but the lemon citrus is ripe and there's some peach as well that emerges with a bit of time.
The big difference for me is that the fruit is less prominent, the wine is more defined by its secondary characters. There's slightly peppery baking spice, lovely sweet vanilla and a bit of earthy warmth from the oak.

Really good drinking and still looking very fresh at almost 9 years.

Huge nose leading with white flowers and nectarine. Then peach, apple, lemon, a saline green olive touch, little grilled nuts. Prominent acid spine. Waft of chalky dustiness. Ample length. This is like a regular Hoddles Creek Estate Chardonnay with all the dials turned up to 11 especially pleasure. Outstanding chardy.

Appealing and a joy to drink. More fruit forward than most other Hoddles Pinot vintages, at least to my recollection. Strawberry, cherry, touch of blackberry. Twiggyness and some green herbs. Smattering of grainy tannin. Ample length. Touch and go for 93.

Bright clear mid red showing the earliest signs of ageing. Nose is complex and savoury; spicy, smoky, earthy, with pinot fruit and sappiness showing underneath. This all continues onto the palate, and after some air a much softer cherry fruit emerges. This is a smart, complex and well proportioned wine, perhaps a tad strong on the oak/stemmy characters, at least upon opening, but that is a personal dislike of mine in general. Plenty of time ahead of it.

Well I have followed the advice of my prior tasting note of fours ago and come back in four years. It's ok, slightly coarse and slightly heavy. Definitely mature. I had hoped it might scale up but im not seeing that here. Just had a covid booster so aware it may have adversely affected my palate temporarily. Drink up with rich sauce lobster.

Great medium bodied chardonnay. Pours clear, slight yellow tinge. Aromas of cashew, melon and struck match. On the palate, more melon, white peach and dried fig, held together with a gentle acidity.

Incredibly intense palate.

Pale ruby colour.

Pronounced aromas of red cherry, cranberry, strawberry, cream, barnyard funk, earth, smoke, clove, struck flint.

Pronounced palate.

Medium (-) body, high acidity, medium (-) tannin, long finish.
