Gone a 4 rating but it does have issues. Old cigar box nose and palate showing us its age. Cork was fantastic so now issues there. Now 26 years old. Deep red colour without the browning normally associated with very old reds. After a bit of air this developed into a great red.

Can’t fault this wine. Better than the St Henri I had last week. Smooth and dedication red. Really good.

Wow what can I say! Cork was good and wine has lasted well. Great Cabernet Sauvignon. Tannins and black fruit. Beautiful red wine colour. No signs of aging other than smooth taste.

{cork, 13%} Gorgeous old red. Brick turning tawny hue. Muted nose, just a little leather and forest floor/compost. But always Cabernet. Palate is medium weight, mirror-smooth, with a touch of Coonawarra mint. Mature, leather, moderate acid, beguiling; a lovely old red without aspiring to the top echelons of Bdx. Level still in neck, a swift double-decant just before drinking revealed a fair bit of sediment. Drink now, unquestioningly. Excellent (if short!) cork. Was this the last Alexanders before Mildara killed it off I wonder?

Not bad. Not great. A bit dense and plain. Lacks character and interest.

Just concentrated premium but boring.

A relic worthy of a note. Washed out fruits, mild space, quite good herbal fruits, but ultimately buggered.

Aromas of herbaceous, biscuit, brambles, cream, black fruits, chocolate, mint, leather. Juicy, creamy, sweetly fruit, spice, black fruits, slight alcohol warmth. Leather. Long. Lovely.
I knew this was my Mildara

{cork, 13%} Level still in neck; immaculate cork. Swift double-decant and then drunk. Moderate sediment. Initially reticent nose blossomed with a bit of air; some Coonawarra mint in line with the label heritage, otherwise very curranty and correct. Quite developed and even a touch leathery. Cool, medium weight palate with medium acidity, medium finely dusty tannins, developing curranty fruit; all up it’s an impressive surprise for this most overlooked of Coonawarra labels. Only the slightly attenuated and perhaps simple finish lets it down a little beside more lauded cabernet names here and overseas, but it’s still a fine achievement. On this showing will hold another 5-8 years easy, but without expectation of any more evolution.

Wow, cork was toast, but the wine was excellent. Years ago, toured Australia (1984) via bicycle and trains. Met a wonderful couple at the Adelaide Art Museum. We took bikes on train, and toured the Coonawarra winery’s. Purchased in OKC around 1987, $6.49! Yum.

Medium to light ruby colour. Upon opening, the wine shows fresh red cherry, black currant, blueberry, blackberry, tobacco, and complex spice notes, but the acidity is disintegrated and the wine seems disharmonious. After a few minutes, however, the wine develops a more mature and more harmonious profile of cherry, mixed berries, milk chocolate, light vegetal/wet autumn leaf notes, leather, tobacco, spices, eucalyptus, liquorice, and balsamic notes, with good acidity, fully resolved tannin, and very good length. A medium- to light-bodied Shiraz that is smoothly textured and well-balanced, and drinks well. A little fuller (medium-bodied) and very smooth on day two. At peak. Well-kept bottles should continue to drink well for another few years.

Bright colour. Mint cream biscuits and dark chocolate on the nose. Grippy blackberry fruit with less mint on the palate than I was expecting from the nose. Lovely soft grip on the finish and considerable length on the finish. Excellent. No rush.

Very soft old red. This is a 19 year old Coonawarra Cab Sav. Tannins have gone and it has an old wine nose and taste. The cork was in great condition. The wine has probably past its peak but a great winter night Red. Colour is still a very good red blackberry and the palate has some remaining spice.

There may have been some batch variation (which can certainly happen with large production runs like this) to account for the rather varied reviews of this wine on the site. This is a well made cool climate Australian style pitched in the commercial, 'restaurant' market.

It was once a flagship style, but that was a long time ago - the early 1980's would be the latest one could have said that.

However, from time to time this wine transcends its style. 1986, 1990 are two vintages that come to mind.

On release, in 2014 I recall it getting very good reviews and tasted at the time I thought it might be fun to grab one and give it some years. The issue with 2012 in Coonawarra is that there was a fair bit of rain at different times and it was a cooler year, so some makers fell foul of slightly under-ripe tannins in their Cabernet, especially. As always, oak treatment can be an issue.

Under a working closure (screw cap), rather than cork (a closure with all the performance characteristics of the Alfa Sud).

Brick red, deep and little fading to the rim.

Nose speaks of cassis with some herbal hints (dare I say it, a hint of green pea), cedar and it really is promising of good Cabernet.

The palate is long with excellent intensity and flavours as per nose. Tannins are firm but fine and really only come on at the finish. The wine is pretty fresh, more so than the colour might suggest. Drink now - it's in a good place. This is equivalent to many Third Growths in quality and given my own views that Bordeaux has been buggered by Parkerisation since the early 1990's it offers a better expression of the grape than them and at a fraction of the price. Not a special occasion wine but a really enjoyable drink with some class beyond its price point.

An old wine. Still has good colour. Deep red heading in a brown direction. Old wine stale? nose. Light oak and tannins still present. Acidic aftertaste coming from somewhere

Enjoyable drop on first impression. Tastes very young. Getting a lot of stalky/herby/capsicum type notes that ended up overwhelming me and wasn't enjoying it much by the end of the second glass. Maybe this would mellow out with a bit more time but the palate didnt have the length to think it would do well in the cellar. Maybe a couple of years bottle age and it would be in a nice middle ground.

Amazing quality for the price. At 15 years of age this wine is still in its' secondary stage of development. Dark red with no browning, abundant fruit, subtle eucalypt/menthol, faint mint, cedar, luscious body and good length This wine has another 5-8 years left in it easy. 93
