2/10/2009 - TampaDan wrote: 84 pointsDark ruby color. Basically just about like the previous bottle, with aromatic notes of marzipan and bitter chocolate, but again a very watery & dilute palate with no mouthfeel and with no fruit to speak of. Decent acidity, but that's about it. This was the one Raye's Hill wine I wouldn't recommend of the five I tried. |

1/30/2009 - TampaDan wrote: 87 pointsThis bottle was a classic case of "if only it had tasted as good as it smelled". Fabulous, complex nose of red fruits (sweet cherries, raspberries and especially cranberries), marzipan and slate, changing to heavily floral with a nice touch of barnyardy funk. Even a hint of dark chocolate eventually emerged. Not much going on on the palate, however; very little fruit to speak of. Certainly not a bad wine, just a bit of a hollow spot on the midpalate. Finish provides a faint echo of fruit. Overall, still not too bad for $28. |

1/26/2009 - TampaDan wrote: 85 pointsDarkest color of the Raye's Hills tried so far, a very dark ruby. Nice initial aromatics, with a red/black fruit mixture and hints of spices and flowers, but hollow & dilute on the palate. Seems like it may have come from very young vines, perhaps? I seem to recall that this was a very good vintage, so rain at harvest seems less likely; of course, there's always plain ol' bottle variation too... |

1/18/2009 - TampaDan wrote: 89 pointsAnother enjoyable, great-value, Raye's Pinot. Darker ruby color, outstanding red fruit nose of strawberries, raspberries and cranberries, a little bit of oak-induced caramel emerging with air, nice fruit on the palate with a finish of good length. I sound like a broken record (does anyone out there remember music on vinyl?) saying this, but I think you'd have an extremely hard time finding a better Pinot for $26. |

1/8/2009 - TampaDan wrote: 91 pointsAnother very nice bottle of this wine, this time offering outstanding aromatic complexity, with alternating notes of earth, minerals, flowers and savory cranberry-raspberry red fruits, along with some barrel spice from the oak. Velvety smooth Pinot palate, with perfectly-integrated tannins and acidity and nice red fruit notes. Surprising powerful as well. Only slight detractor was a bit of excess heat on the medium-length finish, but again, it's hard to quibble when the wine is such an exceptional value. |

12/25/2008 - jeff nowak wrote: 88 pointsi thought this tasted like an oregon pinot, but, of course, i was wrong. 14.3% alcohol. it's thick in the midpalate, and displayed a lot of earthy, almost muddy qualities, with strong notes of asian spice and black fruit. smooth, yet heavy mouthfeel and a good finish. i like my pinots to have more delicate nuances. |

12/19/2008 - TampaDan wrote: 88 pointsAn enjoyable bottle with a nice aromatic and palate profile of red fruit, specifically a note of strawberry preserves. Dark ruby color. Definitely gained a bit of depth with time, revealing some spice character. Excellent balance of tannins and acid. Not mind-blowingly complex, but a perfectly enjoyable wine. |

12/6/2008 - TampaDan wrote: 90 pointsVery nice bottle; dark ruby color, savory red fruit nose complemented by classic baking spices and an unmistakable floral element. At times, it was almost like sticking one's nose into a bouquet of fresh-cut roses. A little bit of initial palate bitterness quickly dissipated. Excellent velvety Pinot mouthfeel, along with a nice deep well of fruit. Slight bit of alcoholic heat which didn't detract. Very impressive indeed for $28. |

11/24/2008 - TampaDan wrote: 87 pointsA nice Pinot, decent but not outstanding, and a good value for the price. Very dark color, almost like a Cab minus the purple. Lots of baking spice aromas, along with a strange resiny/medicinal note on the nose which eventually faded. Juicy mixture of red & black fruits on the palate, with an echo of creamy oak on the medium-length finish, which also included a bit of tannic dryness. Again, an excellent value at $26. |

11/23/2008 - TampaDan wrote: 90 pointsMuch better than the first one; not dried out at all. Red fruits with a little oak spice on the nose, followed by a deep rich palate with an excellent well of flavors. Long, palate-coating finish of close to a minute. One of the best QPR Pinots out there at only $28 a bottle (and that was the highest of the three price points, the others being $24 & $26). A great effort at a more-than-fair price; an incredible rarity nowadays, unfortunately. |

11/14/2008 - TampaDan wrote: NRProbably shouldn't have opened one yet; might be a bit shocky just a week after shipping. Great nose of red fruits and caramel-brown sugar spices, but the fruit seems to be losing a battle with the oak on the palate. Yet the wine shows good depth and richness, not to mention a nice long cherry cola finish. Hard to tell whether it just needs to sit for awhile, or whether it's really just dried out. Will reserve judgment on this wine based on this bottle; instead will score the next one after it's had several more weeks to rest. |
