A: Dark ruby color. Light to medium body. N: Very good nose, reminiscent of some Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs, with notes of herbs, alcohol and red fruits in the background. T: Initially tight and sour. I'm afraid the grapes that went into this wine were severely underripe. After a one and a half hour decant the sourness started fading away, and the wine smoothed out, revealing secondary notes of licorice and dark cherries. After two hours, the wine became even more approachable on the palate, but the nose almost completely disappeared. F: Short, with tartness and some bitterness that translates into flavors of licorice and bitter cherries. Overall: A decent food wine, but you pretty much get what you paid for. This is a wine for smokers, or other drinkers who like wines that have a kick to them. It might actually improve with some more time, but I wouldn't bet on it. 84-85

Another enjoyable, great-value, Raye's Pinot. Darker ruby color, outstanding red fruit nose of strawberries, raspberries and cranberries, a little bit of oak-induced caramel emerging with air, nice fruit on the palate with a finish of good length. I sound like a broken record (does anyone out there remember music on vinyl?) saying this, but I think you'd have an extremely hard time finding a better Pinot for $26.

Chicago Pinot Days-2008 (Navy Pier, Chicago IL): nose: fairly pungent and fruit forward wine with black cherries, some rich red fruits, red licorice, and some raspberry tones. While there is a fair amount going on, there isn't a whole lot of depth to it
taste: medium/full bodied that is smooth and fruit forward with black cherries, red licorice, and rich red fruits
overall: a very good pinot for the price. Does what it needs to well and is good for those that are fans of this style and want this profile without paying over 30. Nice smooth black cherry attack and a red licorice finish

Been a while since I had a Raye's Hill. Kind of a herby/spicy nose but hard to nail down for me. Soft but good balance here, juicy, snappier fruit with blue and red tones. Priced at around $26, I recall--good value.

(Raye's Hill Pinot Noir Henneberg Anderson Valley) Medium cherry red color with clear meniscus; sexy, dried cherry, black cherry and caramel nose; tasty, tart black cherry, cherry palate with stem note, and sweet firm tannins, high acidity and a little disjointed; medium-plus finish
