The stemware made the difference. I tasted with the Grassl and a reidel venom extreme stem. This time the Reidel showed the most expression.
Roasted rhubarb and mild spices nose. Very fine and delicate on the palate, cherry cedar raspberry spice box body. Nice medium finish with a pleasant after taste.

2011 J Thomas "Dundee Hill" Pinot noir
13.2% ABV / 750mL
Grown and bottled by proprietor

This has been a wine on my tasting list for some time, the producer having sort of reaching mythical status, of the one man grower/winemaker/marketer/merchant who operates from his hermit cave deep in the jungles of Willamette valley. The wine only accessible via a 3 day hike from Portland and a prayer to the wine gods. Well maybe that's getting a little carried away. Thomas sells his wine the old fashion way, via a print mailing. The winery doesn't have a website and it's somewhat hard to track down. But it has many fans, and the wines seem to sell out, so he must be doing something right. I guess this penchant for doing things the old way adds to the allure. Anyways, I secured a bottle and it was time to check if the wine lives up to the legend.

With grilled octopus and carrots.

Pop and pour. (Whole) Cork came out clean. Color is light and clear, kind of a pale ruby, maybe a Coeur de pigeon that's sometimes used to describe slightly aged Bourgogne.

Initially the wine was a strong cranberry scent and tasted of cranberry juice. After 5 minutes, the cranberries deminished with strawberries, raspberries, and meadow flowers taking over the olfactory aromas.

Taste - front of red fruit, raspberries, cherries, medium acidity. The mid palette brings in some sea salt, buttered toast, with a soft oak finish. Lingers on the tongue for 15s or so.

It's a nice elegant Pinot noir. It has some Oregon fresh fruit, but also a bit more finesse and less power than many Oregon Pinot noirs. I'm curious how much of that is due to age vs winemaking style.

Anyways, it is a lovely wine that is drinking well and look forward to trying some other vintages.

93/100

First check-in for this vintage. I also tasted the 2019 at around the same age. The fruit in the 2021, while certainly present, is more muted by comparison. I notice more acidity now than I remembered from before. The fruit note is predominantly a very pleasant sour cherry.

The nose is also more muted than I recall (but it is also allergy season, so take that for what you will). Floral-ish.

The mouthwatering finish is decently long.

Overall, this is a very pleasant glass of wine. It feels less approachable than the 2019, but then Thomas' wines have a reputation for needing lots of time to develop. I can't wait to see what this becomes!

(popped and poured; if things change significantly with air, I'll come back to update.)

Day two- Zalto Burgundy glass
Bing cherries, soy, morels, and a little forest floor on the nose.

Incredibly composed, good acid and tannins, another mouthwatering experience. There are dark and red cherries, orange peel, cola, and savory mushrooms dancing across the palate.

Really stellar wine that is in a great place currently. Still quite vigorous with just the beginnings of tertiary development starting to show.

Ruby red in color. 13.4% ABV. Beautiful nose of red fruits, baking spices and flowers. Light to medium body with exquisite acidity. Impeccably balanced. Bursting with bright, earthy fruits. Bing Cherry, cranberry, black tea and minerals on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Beguiling Pinot Noir that should age well. Best over the next 6-8 years.

This has been open for like 2-3 hours. JFC this is intense*. Pomegranate oil, strawberry compote and blood orange on the nose. Cherry flesh and pits. There is a stemmy/brambly note after the fruit. So perfumed and potent but with great verve as well. Very very young and primary. Maybe some Sous Bois? Palate shows wild strawberry and forest floor notes. Cherry. Gutty. Lots of flavor with some hints of sweet oak. Very light on its feet and precise. Finish shows tart red fruits, some menthol and some creamy oak. A really nice texture and depth to the finish. My first Thomas and I believe the hype. Nose - 5-5.5+/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5+/6, Finish - 1.5/2 = 17-17.5+/20 (with 17.5-18/20 potential.)

Our penultimate bottle, served double blind to our dinner companions. Light color suggests it is older. Quite floral and elegant with aromas of rose petal, cherry, lavender and crushed mint. Slightly warmer fruit on the palate, with more of a cherry and raspberry compote quality along with a soft but noticeable vein of acidity. Picks up an orange peel quality as it sits, along with a subtle earthy note. There's a subtle sulfur note that blows off after a few minutes. This had been gently double decanted off its sediment about an hour earlier, and it held up nicely over another 3-4 hours. Many guesses for Burgundy. WOTN for a couple of folks. I'll plan to open our final bottle sometime next year.

Nice color with slight browning notes. Nose is wonderful; red cherries, rose water, and maybe jammy lingonberries. Palate is fantastic. This bottle still has a slight effervescence. Nice body on the mid-palate. Agree with other taster that this is a very feminine rendition of Thomas and I'm very happy with that. Like a nice Volnay, it has great presence on the palate (almost like glycerine) and doesn't need to be a fruit bomb. Elegant. Should last awhile as it's clearly not falling apart but why risk the wait?

Really incredible vintage for Thomas here. I’ve had 18 and 19 on release and this is just more ready for immediate pleasurable consumption.

Rather light garnet color in the glass, by comparison most 2020 red burgs I have had are far darker, this is open and aromatic, with wild fruits like rhubarb and boysenberry. Some savory underpinning (that I assume is the work of some whole cluster inclusion) and fine spices on a sapid conclusion. This was open knit and totally delicious. Wish I’d purchased more!

The Thomas bottle variation was very present in this one and I will not be giving it a rating. This 15 was much lighter than the other 15s I've opened. I couldn't tell if there was a flaw but it was much different than previous 2015s.

This is a wow wine that is still a baby.

Lovely nose of oak balanced by red fruit and florals. Palate is just gorgeous—red and purple fruits matched with flowers and a bit of mineral earth. Some oak as well. Medium light body but with so much finesse. Even though this drinks beautifully now its best days are in 15 years. 94

Cork leaked, and some crust under the capsule. On the nose: vosne spice, rose, pure wild strawberry, a touch of earth. On the palate: lovely acidity, a hint of va, wild strawberry, cocoa powder, rose, a touch of black tea. Some grainy tannin on the juicy finish. Just starting to come into its own, but an absolutely gorgeous btl of wine. Undoubtedly the best PN I've had this year. A glorious btl.

96 on the way to 100. Two hour decant. Explosive aromas of cherry, raspberry, roses, touch of earth. Mouth wagering acidity, hits the palate with a silk blanket of delicious fruit.. Obviously so young, but so much greatness ahead. Punches with the grand cru of Burgundy at a relative bargain price point. The best that Dundee has to offer. Captivating.

Translucent ruby. Nose of heady violets, sharp ebullient red berry, sea air, bits of ripe currant. Layers of brilliantly ripe red raspberry fruit bursting with youthful energy and hints of astringency and iron on the palate. Tingly acidity and firm but smoothed tannin. Long ringing finish of steely red fruit and integrated iron. Hedonistic excellence tonight.
