2016 Troon Vineyard Vermentino Cuvée Rolle

Applegate Valley more

5/1/2024 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 92 points

Retail $20. Responsible Bottle (516g; 1lb 2.2oz). 90% Vermentino co-fermented with 10% Marsanne. I first (and last) tasted this wine nearly six years ago and I loved it then (91 Points). Well, it may even be better now. Still a brilliant straw in the glass with plenty of white peach, beeswax, and a slight herbal note. The palate oozes plenty of that beeswax, intense white flower, and a zingy tartness. Yowza. Even another half dozen years out? I need to bump this up a notch. Excellent. 92 Points.

2016 Troon Vineyard Vermentino Cuvée Rolle

Applegate Valley more

5/30/2018 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 91 points

Retail $20. 90% Vermentino co-fermented with 10% Marsanne. Rolle is what the French call Vermentino, and constitutes nearly all of the white wine produced in Provence. While Rolle only accounts for about 5% of Provençal wine production, it is usually round and rich with a distinct tartness. That is why I wish the kind people at Troon would just dive in and call this Rolle, and ditch the “Vermentino” altogether. This is decidedly crafted in the French style with citrus, stone, and exotic fruit (lemon rind, pineapple, white peach) with a lip-smacking tartness, a mid-palate flintiness, and a sweet vanilla finish. Another winner from Troon. Outstanding. 90-92 Points.

2022 Troon Vineyard Mourvèdre Amphora

Applegate Valley more

4/24/2024 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 93 points

Retail $65. Ridiculously Light Bottle (472g; 1lb 0.6oz). 75% Mourvèdre (35% whole cluster), 25% Grenache (30% whole cluster). When it comes to red wine, I can count on one hand the number of times I have said "I could really go for a Mourvèdre." It tends to be heavy, very fruity, and dark. Well, perhaps not "heavy" but the other two attributes are certainly here as it is on the dar side and there is plenty of dark fruit (blueberry, blackberry), a touch of earth, and more than an ounce of brood. What sets this wine clearly apart from other Mourvèdres (at least for me) is that the driver here is clearly the tartness. Holy cow. Lip-smacking goodness from the jump and it carries all the way through to the finish. Yowza.

Immediately apparent as new world, but still a tasty bottle. I've had OPB's of Cowhorn syrah before and they are among the best from the Applegate Valley region of Southern Oregon.

2022 Troon Vineyard Roussanne

Applegate Valley more

4/3/2024 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 91 points

Retail $45. Ridiculously Responsible bottle (470g; 1lb 0.5oz). Under DIAM5. 100% Roussanne. Another stellar wine from one of my favorite producers; Troon seems to do everything right in regards to preserving the planet while making stellar wines. Add this to the list. While I view Roussanne as a bifurcating wine (you either love it or hate it), I feel this iteration can appeal to both sides. Straw to yellow in the glass with fantastic fruit aromas of lemon rind, guava, and mango. Add in a bit of honeysuckle and spice and we are getting there. The palate is round, full, robust, all while being tart and angular. Tons of contrast, oodles of tropical fruit, and loads of great vibes. Excellent. 91 Points.

Applegate Valley Red Blend more

3/20/2024 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 90 points

Retail $25. Ridiculously Responsible bottle (475g; 1lb 0.7oz). Under DIAM. "The 2022 Druid’s Red blend is composed primarily of grenache, syrah, and mourvèdre, along with a lagniappe of other varieties." No longer called "Druid's Fluid" but more simply "Druid's Red", this deep magenta wine is approachable from the first to last drop. Tons of fruit both on the nose and the palate, most of it dark with blackberry, blueberry, and even boysenberry floating around. There is also a bubblegum aspect that makes me think there is at least a touch of carbonic maceration going on. Fruity and fun with plenty of tartness; a fantastic burger, pizza kinda wine.

3/14/2024 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 92 points

Retail $25. Very Responsible bottle (471g; 1lb 0.6oz). The exact blend is never revealed (rather cheeky of Troon), but the website lists "Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Bourboulenc and Vermentino" as *possible* in the blend. Golden in color with a lovely nose of tropical fruit and lemon curd with even a touch of caramel. The palate is fantastic: great fruit, intense tartness, depth of flavors, and incredible character. All that for twenty-five bucks? Sign me up every day (and twice on Sunday).

Sadly (perhaps) I grew up learning all about Syrah from a little place called Crozes Hermitage. While not every Syrah lover's particular favorite, the general characteristics have carried me through for 30+ years now so when I try a "new world" version of some Syrah blend, all I seem to come up with is fruity, cheerful and OK (like this version). I long for the hint of leather, savory and garique.

Fruity, cheerful, OK. I will say that Troon wines seem more "alive" than comparable wineries and this one was no exception.

2022 Troon Vineyard Vermentino

Applegate Valley more

2/17/2024 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 94 points

Retail $40. Responsible bottle (462g; 1lb 0.3oz). DIAM10 closure. I have written a ton about Troon, I have visited, even stayed over night on the property, and thus I confess as a full-blown lover of the winery and the wines. Having said that, I do try to keep my reviews of the wines honest. Troon used to call this wine Rolle (the French name for Vermentino) and I applauded them for that, being the Francophile that I am. But they switched to the more widely known term a few years ago and I Rolled with it (yeah, I went there). Well, this might be the best iteration of Troon's interpretation of the variety thus far. Rich, layered, intense, and nuanced, it is all there. Exotic, tropical, and citrus fruit all compete on the nose with a seashell-like salinity, and a bit of acacia flower for good measure. The palate is rich, as I mentioned, round, and textured, but there is also a driving acidity that brings it into a near impeccable balance, all leading to a lengthy finish. Yowza. And Whoa. 94 Points.

Retail $40. Responsible bottle (473g; 1lb 0.7oz). DIAM10 stopper. There is so much to love about Troon, one singular tasting note is insufficient. Demeter Certified Biodynamic, Regenerative Organic Certified, and Wine Enthusiast American Winery of the Year, just to get it started. And the people? Top-notch across the board. Yowza. Oh? The wine? Equally top-notch and this one follows suit. Bright berry fruit, intense tartness, plenty of earth but it does not stop there. The spice here is rather intense here, with an herbal aspect as well. I have not spent a ton of time in Southern Oregon, but this wine certainly invokes memories of the time I did spend there.

Still a beautiful deep ruby. Blackberries, pine needles, loam and a hint of bell pepper on the nose.

A rich, juicy fruit-driven palate shows pepper, leather and charcoal, with medium acid and fine tannins wrapped around the edges. The finish is long and fruity.

I mean I like this wine a fair bit but, whoasa, two earlier reviews emptied the whole wine tasting dictionary on this stuff! Seriously? I'm not sure whether to be impressed or annoyed. I don't think I've ever tasted that much in a single bottle in my life! I get that the guy from Houston might have connections (the winery is owned by a couple from Texas) and therefore needs to keep up the side (so to speak, Texans are like that...) but the other guy? Anyway, it's an enjoyable wine (full disclosure, I am a member of their wine club after all) and definitely worthy of trying.

Whether or not your mouth will experience the rapture that others have experienced is an open question and one for you to explore. But I stand by my 88.....

12/19/2023 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 93 points

Retail $35. 70% Vermentino, 25% Viognier, 5% Rousanne. This is now my fourth vintage of this wine that I have sampled and the folks at Troon certainly have it dialed in. While I am not sure if an amber or orange wine is an "acquired taste" it certainly is a different style of wine (in brief, it is a white wine made as if it were a red wine with extended contact with the skins). Golden, even approaching orange in color, and is floral (orange blossom), fruity (orange peel, lemon rind), and spicy (allspice, ginger). Throw in a healthy dose of honey and there is officially a ton going on with the nose. The palate is rich and layered with baked tree fruit, honey, that ginger, and plenty of heft. Again, this is not a wine for everyone, but like the three vintages that preceded this one, this is really a fantastic iteration of the genre. Outstanding. 93 Points.

Vibrant purple color. The aromas show a tangy compote of plums, raspberries, and tangy blueberries, along with violets, potting soil, some light roast coffee, and all sorts of herbs and spices. The palate is super zesty and bright, with tangy wild raspberries and strawberries, saucy plums, cranberry jam. I enjoy the clay and earth tones, with violets and herbal tea. So fun and juicy, crushable yet complex. A great combination. An exciting kitchen sink blend of grapes like Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Tannat, Negrette, and others.

Rich yellow color. A tropical, floral bouquet with pineapple, lemon curd, kiwi, and papaya, topped in chalk dusty, crunchy sea salt and river rocks, with honey and almond skin. The palate has a smooth texture and crisp acidity with green and yellow pears and apples, along with kiwi, mixed with orange blossom, dandelion, some sliced cucumber, and sea salt. There’s a focused mineral presence underneath as well. This is so much fun. This vintage is a blend of Vermentino, Marsanne, Lagniappe, and other grapes.

Forest floor, a funky, reductive nose, with floral and dark fruit aromas in the background. This bottle didn't seem Bretty to me--earthy aromas, but no off flavors on the palate. Floral inner aromas, with fresh fruit, great elegant texture. Moderately tannic still, medium acidity, good finish. Low oak imprint.

Probably could use a few years for tannins to integrate. Hard to say where this is going, it has a definite Old World character (nose is wild, palate is refined) that could bloom in complexity or simply could become more feral.

Dark ruby color. Wow, the nose pops with pretty blueberries, tangy black cherries, currant compote, along with enticing amounts of black pepper, clove, violet petals, spicy red pepper, and some tilled soil. Delightful to sniff. Zippy acidity frames this wine well, while the tannins provide a dusty but wonderfully chewy feel, with flavors of plums and tangy blueberries and black cherries. There are a lot of spicy nuances in here to parse through: paprika, black pepper, spicy pepperoni, barbecue sauce, charcoal. I also get notes of violets and minerals. A lot going on here; it’s fun young but would also be interesting with a few years of age on it.

Pale lemon color. The nose is bright and salty with tropical flowers and spritely tones; the fruit is lemon and kiwi and orange peel, mixed with honey, sea salt, almond skin, and white flowers. On the palate, this is taut and energetic with a floral, bright, oceanic appeal. Notes of kumquat, lime, orange peel – the fruit blends well with elements of minerals, chalk dust, sea salt, celery seed. I get nuances of white and yellow flowers, along with notes of honey and peanut skin. Complex, vibrant, this would be amazing with oysters. A lot going on here, and Troon really has such expressive Vermentino. An absurd value, and worth seeking out.
