Restaurant purchase, so no real notes.

Inviting nose of blue fruits, blackberry, some bloody/meaty character.
Already showing depth and complexity and above all character.

Looking at the still fruity character and the tannins this wine is still in its adolescence, but damn was it delicious.
After two hours in the decanter the wine showed best but was open from the beginning.
I envy everyone who has this in their cellar, enjoy!

Decanted 11 hours. Needed all of them. The tannins are still rather assertive, but the bottle did offer up pleasure. The nose is classic wet rock Cornas. Palate is a bowl of unripened red and black fruits, minerality, and black olives.

Solid bottle of wine that has tremendous potential. In another handful of years, we could be in a sweet spot.

You know, dear fellow CTers, it occurs to me that we have a decided advantage over the rest of the population. Consider: I am an adequate to enthusiastic parent, a spouse who’s partner still occasionally makes me weak in the knees, a fierce dog lover, and a best friend. Why do I primarily wish to remain as healthy and cognizant as possible? What makes me think, “You go another mile, damnit,” or, “You wanna smoke WHAT?” It is the wine. It is all the aging wine.

Ye Olde Rieslings: The tightest of the 3 Dönnhoff GGs. A wall of minerals, with some rainwater flowing through, yuzu aromatics, high acid, and more minerals piled on top for good measure. A bit linear and hard to get a read, although clearly a lot of stuffing. Maybe this will be the greater wine in 15 years, but right now it's the least extroverted. 91++

The German Rieslings from the 2021 vintage have a lot of acidity due to the weather. I believe that if they also have enough substance, they will be able to become great after many years.

10 years after Riesling tasting - 2014 (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Glass: Gabriel Universal
Bottle opened ~10h before the tasting. I was flashed from this vintage right after release and had high hopes. Not as exiting as expected, but very good. Clear, medium golden color. Fine, fruity, dense nose. On the palate smoky, salty, precise, deep and dense, with a nice tension and good length. Full peak. 92-93

Dobbeltdekantert og servert 2 t senere. Lett gylden farge. Lang. Bra konsentrasjon og dybde. Holder seg godt også på dag 2.

Tasting the new vintage at the winery.
Both "Alte Reben" offering deeper complexity while remaining clearly racy Kabinetts. As all wines of this vintage of Dr. Hermann the different vineyards are quite easy to determine, i.e. perfect terroir-translation. Next to the Würzgarten Kabi Alte Reben the Treppchen is second, better is the enemy of good.

Drank next to 2012 Voge Vieilles Fontaines. Quite a bit more rustic in comparison with lots of smoky notes on the nose, cured meat, dark fruit. On the palate good fruit and acidity, not totally harmonious and a little angular with somewhat harsh and - towards the end - drying tannins. 90-92

1999 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune

Alsace more

3/16/2024 - Rieslingfan wrote: NR

Back in January 2024 I opened the bottle of 1999 Clos Ste. Hune that I had bought on release and cellared with care for 20+ years. It was completely oxidized. Yes 20 years is a long time, but Clos Ste. Hune is capable of extremely long aging. Anne Trimbach reached out to me and offered to replace the bottle. We had a pleasant back and forth regarding the potential causes of poor showings of late-1990s Trimbach wines, and we agreed that lack of care by the importer or distributor could have been a contributing factor. My few bottles of 1998 Trimbach, purchased in France, have to date been perfect.

In mid-February the replacement arrived, triple boxed and swaddled in bubble wrap. I put it in the cellar for a few weeks of rest, until an obvious opportunity to open it arrived with a dinner alongside long and new friends at southern New Jersey restaurant Two Fish. The wine did not disappoint.

Not surprisingly for a middling vintage, this Hune is mature, but the bottles showed zero traces of oxidation, and floated alongside the excellent food, lifting the heavier courses, and singing harmony to the lighter ones. Seashell, lemon zest, and a compelling smoky note, more harmonious than could be termed petrol, infused the aromatics, and echoed on the palate, lingering longer than I had the patience to calculate. The next sip called, and there were also other wines.

The cause of the premature oxidation in the prior bottle is hard to know, but Anne’s effort to show the true quality of 1999 Clos Ste. Hune certainly paid off.

Very fine, medium-intense nose with red fruits (cherry, some blackberry), black olives, black pepper and menthol. At the end a fine smell of hung meat. Very nice!

Very elegant, light on the palate. There are bright, red fruits (sour cherry, raspberries). There are also olives, peppery notes and game meat on the palate. The acidity is fresh, yet blends in harmoniously. The tannins are ample and fine.

The wine of vintage 21 differs from vintage 15 less in its aroma than in its structure. 15 was dense, multi-layered and powerful, whereas 21 is light and delicate. I assume that the wine of vintage 21 is more predestined for earlier consumption. I liked the wine very much and the only 12.5% alcohol was very pleasant.

Grande Champagne: Fine texture in the mouth with a full body.
Toast and brioche notes, noticeable wood, yet mineral and focused, no noticeable residual sweetness.
There is a VA note that I find pretty off-putting at the moment, but the other drinkers did not seem to care as much as I did.
Maybe this can go away with aging. Hence, may range for the rating.

Outstanding wine! Ripe, concentrated yellow fruit, yet very balanced. Quite full-bodied for a Riesling.
After having the wine with food, I could sense some wood on the palate, anyway if there is wood it is perfectly integrated.

Decent but not more.
Mid weight; rather dark colour.
Good balance.
But the thing is, this is a simple, unexciting Pinot Noir that needs food since it has nothing to make it worthwhile on its own: it's just raw and has little structure.
Insofar shamelessly overpriced at 22 EUR.
This is a "let's have some generic red wine to go with the goulash"-type of wine which should never cost most than 10-12 EUR.
Friedrich Becker's base Pinot Noir for 14 EUR is several classes better and his Schweigen, in the same price category as this Schulen, wipes the floor with the latter.
Not happy with this.

unfortunately I have had the same experience.
I had made a note of it: Cherry-fruity on the nose with an unpleasant medicinal, pungent note; on the palate there is some spice with a medium body, an overly obvious acidity and very pithy, still strongly astringent tannins. Tiresome to drink. A great pity.

Followed in the wake of the most beautiful 2016 Dalamara VV ( Papies 95) which was not an easy one for this otherwise beautiful wine. We believe this has 10% Barbera in the blend. Modern for sure but at this stage has a beauty to it and for sure with a lot of life ahead. 92-93
