Odd bottle. Too much green for me.

3/25/2024 5:04:00 AM - Just had this yesterday. Absolutely a HUGE amount of green, very leafy, spicy and vegetal. It could have been a Chinon. I like that myself, but I can easily see it being very polarizing!

Kobayashi Winter Tasting: Wonderful acidity. I really love good Viognier from Washington State, as the best examples express the showy aromatics of the variety but have cut, acid and focus. This is among the best examples.

1/29/2024 2:44:00 PM - Lots of discussion in December about "old Faiveley" style (hard, masculine, structured) versus the wines now which (post 2005?) are much more polished and approachable. (There are people in my tasting group that are way bigger Burg folks and a lot more informed.)

This was incredible. Go back to KL's note on the '15 to say it better. The texture is just beyond. And I am dialed into the notion that AR Malbec - at its best - is derived from the same clones here. Amazing dark fruits, just whiffs of dirt and fougere and filthy tights.

Got to say, given all the positive reviews for this CDP I was terribly disappointed. Purchased at a French restaurant in Georgetown, which was equally disappointing. That being said, this bottle just would not open up, muted nose, the palate had some spicy notes that saved this from a lower score. It displayed little in the way of fruit, earth or meaty flavors I come to expect in a fine CDP, paired with disappointing beef burguignon and coq au vin, which I am sure did no favors for the wine.

ESTG Year-End Tasting (Newcastle, WA): More mineral and austere than the 2001 tasted alongside at first impression. But it opened up more easily to savory, umami-laden core. Just silky and easy to enjoy. It has considerably less depth than the 2001, more to drink now or sooner.

Getting cold here, so felt like picking a Chateuneuf du Pape tonight. This was a classic from a Cdp. Decanted for an hour as the wine is still tannic. Opened up more as the night went along. Dark fruit, perfumed, and some leather. Fantastic CDP (Editor's note: score of 60 removed)

54th birthday dinner. Near birth year. This started slowly, surprisingly dark and dusky, not very forthcoming at first. But oh the depth! Layers and layers of chocolate covered cherry and mineral with impressive freshness and structure. I have had better bottles, and this wine has seen better days, but it is still an impressive Margaux. Deep, red fruit. Deep minerality. Smoke. Surprisingly structured and austere.

This was a disappointment. A strong sense of petrol emerged on opening the bottle. Then after a bit of air and even time in a decanter the wine thinned out and lost any distinction.

Corked.

Changed note to no rating to keep the whiners happy. it seems rating a corked wine is somehow inappropriate. Whatever. Amateurs. Some winemakers have a lot of corked wines and others (Rousseau,Vogue, for example) never do.

If I could magically remove the taint this would be a good bottle in the 90s but IT ISN’T. It is near undrinkable … thus low score. The winemaker contributed to this problem as it obviously left the winery with some sort of taint. So THIS BOTTLE has a low score.

This is why I can rarely be bothered to post notes.

  • Comment posted by Eric:

10/20/2023 8:45:00 PM - We have a checkbox to note when a wine is flawed. That is actually the site policy. Please just use that.

  • Comment posted by Eric:

10/21/2023 3:37:00 PM - Much appreciated. And to be clear, it is totally cool to post notes on defective/flawed bottles. As you note, it can expose a trend that goes beyond specific bottles. Just use that checkbox. What I do if scoring is just note in the text of the note what I might score. (It's always sad when you can sense a good wine behind the TCA...)

I brought this to Etta's for dinner with Suzi (mini-crabcakes followed by the spice-rubbed salmon & cornbread pudding). On opening it was dark, brooding and tannic unlike almost any Pinot I have ever tasted. A bit of barnyard seems evident. At first it showed loads of tannin and acid, but the fruit was hiding. With time in the glass (NOTE: Etta's has *really* crappy restaurant glasses. Will Tom Douglas restaurants drive me to BYO glasses?) it starts to open up and expand, lengthening on the palate. Finally by the time the salmon entrees arrived we were dealing with pure MAGIC! The acid gets along SOOOO well with the fat of the salmon, the finish showing power and grace. Deep cherry, powerful and intense on the palate yet very smooth.

One troubing sign is that the finish seemed to tighten up by the end of the meal, but I also think that had to do with a clash with the sweet creme brulee dessert. Gorgeous bottle!

It is a bit painful to read a review, 20 years and 10,000 wines later. I was pretty eager and very green. I suspect that Chevillon is ready just about now (and current CT notes confirm that). Oh well!
