Is the end of the drinking window really 16 years for this wine? That's the longest of all vintages of this wine. The average drinking window for all vintages is 3.5 to 8 years, or here, 2007 to 2012. Maybe I should drink up. Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

10/18/2016 4:58:00 PM - I have the 2004 and 2005 vintages of this wine. I feel the 2004 is superior and I finished off the 05's awhile ago. I do not think this wine is improving, but I feel in no rush to drink it. It is a (too?) sweet wine and it has never had a lot of acidity for balance, but I really like the apple, pear, and other fruit. My advice for what it is worth (not a lot) is to drink them over the next couple years.

Third bottle in the past 12 months and it is very enjoyable. Red fruit, depth, cedar, a little smoke, and a smooth lingering finish. Solid wine. I think it probably will keep longer than 2017, but probably will not improve. I put it to 2020.

2011 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain

Representative of the newer style of Dunn Howell mountain, more approachable upon release but still very capable of aging well for many years. Really very nice upon opening with the telltale candle wax bouquet. Very well focused fruit with caramel overtones, balanced tannins with an impressively long finish. Improved with an hour and a half of decanting as is the case with most Dunn wines.

3/13/2015 6:13:00 PM - Do you think the style of this wine is intentionally different, or just that the 2011 vintage is not as powerful as some others. I read your comments with great apprehension...please do not change...change is bad, ask anyone! :)

From a half bottle. Still young and somewhat disjointed, but a lot of things going right. The nose was sweet, but quite floral and lacked depth. The palate however was very full with a lot of depth and ever-changing as the night progressed. Honey, sweet pear, orange peel, apricot. Firm acidity. Great!

1/9/2015 4:46:00 AM - No wrong answer, they are drinking very well right now. That being said, it should continue to improve. If I have to pick flaws, I think some of the more unique flavors are not as well integrated as they could be. The wine is very "bright" still and some of the toned down flavors are still developing that may add a little gravitas.

Integrating nicely. Red fruit profile. Developing some secondary flavors of spice, cedar, tobacco. Medium finish.

1/24/2014 10:44:00 AM - I did a 2oz taste as soon as I opened it and was not impressed. It had a sour taste in the finish and was flat. Decanted and left for 30 minutes in the cellar. Drank over the next two hours and it was improving still. Complexity showed more as it warmed up and with some vigerous swirling in the glass. I do not think this is an epic wine that will get much better. The fruit is solid and well integrated, but I would not want it to fade a lot. I think it will be in a very good drinking window for another couple years and still be good in 4-5. My cellering accuracy is well under 100% on how long to age, so ...

Jean-François Bourdy's Decades tasting: One wine from every decade of the 20th century, back to 1904 (E&R, Portland, OR): This offers much richer aromas than the 1990. Fantastic depth; rich and decedent. This smells like caramelized butter and brown sugar. Delicious. Incredible palate presence, which is very rich, deep, and thick in texture. It's tart and rich, but so gracefully plays a balance between that lightness and rich cream mixed with white fruits (like white peaches) cooked in butter and a lemon tartness on top (but not the lemon flavor). Wow, the finish attacks with rich acids and tartness. Really impressive presence, with incredible intensity. Killer stuff here. 93+, and yes, the + means it will only improve from here.

Deep indigo color. Notes of dark fruit and smoke on the nose. Although this may have been a bit past prime there is still plenty of the astringency and bramble-like flavor that is typical of Howell Mountain fruit. Drank this side by side with an '84 Dunn Napa and an '89 Dunn Howell Mountain, all representing the children's birth years, at a gala Christmas Eve dinner at Ditka's in Chicago. The '82 was a bit thin compared to the '84 and '89 but still delicious and drinkable.

6/8/2011 6:54:00 PM - I was wondering if anyone else had this wine. Just FYI, they are no longer in business. I thought perhaps they had just closed the tasting room, but I asked around in Paso Robles and was told that they folded. Too bad, I liked visiting them.
