This is a clear candidate for 101 Pts, as well as wine of the vintage! Mind-blowing in every sense of the word, from start to finish, this wine is breath-taking! Multi-layered, and multi-faceted, the wine coats your palate, mouth, teeth, and gums with non-stop layers of opulent fruits that are elegant, regal, sophisticated, and seamless. You also find vibrancy as well as astonishing purity. The 60-second mark is left in the dust in the seamless, seemingly, endless finish. If you have the money and want one of the great wine-tasting experiences of your life, this is for you! Drink from 2024-2060.

Recent purchase - great aroma upon opening, and served without decanting. Wow, this is great - first Black Cat I haven't had to give some air. Tannins are a little tight at first but over time everything resolves into a very smooth, nicely complicated ride. Very happy that this wine does so well at 21 years of age.

Second of 2 (1/23 TN), and unlike so many other wines I’ve revisited in the past 6 months with a year+ in between bottles, this has barely budged, for better and worse, so that I don’t have much of anything to add to that TN. This benefits from 30-45 minutes of air to sort itself out, then held well over 3 nights, even with some shifting notes. The structure is still strong, so this should have several years of drinking around this level left. Very solid at my price point ($45), but a lot less inspiring that at the 2x+ WS is showing, which puts it at or above Fuligni, Ucciliera, and Ciacci Pianrosso and not far behind Casanova di Neri TN, all of which I’d prefer. Fwiw, of the 3 vintages in the vertical, I’d rank them ‘12, ‘13 and ‘11. 92-93ish if scoring.

2018 Château Canon

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

There is a polish here that immediately adds to the textural profile of this Canon. Somewhat plush, but not so much that it makes for too fruity or flabby of a delivery, the 2018 is similar stylistically to other St. Emilion siblings in this vintage. Approachable and fun, albeit still primary and direct, the core berry fruit sways into the modern field but makes sure to keep a solid foot in some older school attributes. I could have done with a hair more intensity and tannic structure, but its cut and acidic spine are enough to counter the ripe and contoured fruit. 4-5 years on its side will do it well.

I wouldn't call this a blockbuster Canon, but it's certainly a solid performer at a price point that isn't instantly nauseating. I think the 2016 has a little more going for it, but will take a smidge longer to come around. The 2018 seems (emphasis on 'seems') like it won't shut down too hard at any given moment, but a few years in the cellar will give a clearer picture down the road. For now, it's not a complete waste of time to drink now, but some short term patience will be rewarded. 93-94+ points.

Decanted one hour then back into the bottle to take to HMCs for dinner. So a 1 hour double decant. Aired out over another 3 hours before and during dinner.....dark purple in the glass, nose of dark berries, a little forest floor but not much else. Palate has good weight, dark red/black berry fruit, a hint of graphite. 93 for sure. Later in the night approaching 4 hours of air this one gets more juicy and develops a nice milk chocolate on the palate. Excellent acidity backing it all up. This is a very nice entry level Mark Herold wine from a very good vintage and certainly can go for many more years.....borders on a 94 for me by the end of its milk chocolatey night!.....

Method: 30 minute decant; slightly chilled; Cab glass

Look: deep purple with a dark ruby rim

Nose: red fruit, raspberry, sage, cigar box, cedar

Palate: raspberry, blackberry, dried herbs; long finish of dried herbs, pencil lead, cedar; dry; medium+ tart acidity; high- smaller, drying tannin; medium+ body

Overall thoughts: This has a lot of stuffing, not a ton of complexity, and a good body. I thought this showed a bit tart, which is not ideal for me. Hopefully, this just needs some more air or time in the bottle (I imagine it'll improve to some degree). Good wine.

Update: After revisiting this a coupe months after the initial Corivan, after a very gentle evolution has occurred, as it often does with the Corivan, this is a great wine (at this point). Definitely quality stuff here, but it needs a lot of time, in my opinion. Hold and enjoy in a few years.

DO NOT OPEN. Hold for 5+ years at minimum. This is (allegedly) Figgins Estate Red 2018. This is a 94+ wine but I won't rate it as such because it is not anywhere close to ready.

3h decant, poured a couple ounces, got my face ripped off by tannins, poured back into bottle and corked for 24h.

Day 1: way too tannic and wound up to get anything. Not sure if it makes sense but it even smells tannic.

Day 2: Complex nose of mixed dark red and black plum, subtle fig, cigar box, pencil shavings, maybe even walnut husk, subtle baking spices. Palate is medium full body and actually more in the true red spectrum. Balanced acid and tannin elevates the fruit character to a lighter color. Finish initially shows oak flavors of espresso and leather, but not in an obtrusive way. Soon after, dark red and black fruits create a significant undertone, and there's actually a hint of green pepper too. It closes with big tannins to remind of the massive structure on this wine.

Again, this is an incredible wine that is not ready. It requires a lot of drinking through the tannins, despite the 24h decant. 8-10 years from now it will be incredible.

HOLD for 5-7 more years (2027+) before opening.

My first go with the 2007, and it’s a beaut. Short decant, but the nose is demonstrative from the get go, with beautiful wild strawberry, cherry and some smoothly integrated oak notes- much better integrated than on the rosado we had last week. Palate is, to use an overused but apt comparison, quite Burgundian in texture, with a silky lightness and elegance. Flavors burst forth of sugared cranberries, orange peel, tobacco, bay leaf, pizza crust, and some stony earth. Savory deliciousness married to juicy acidity. Again, the American oak is very harmonious, even though I’ve gotten less tolerant as of late. Such great inner mouth perfume. Finishes nice and clean, with good length, and no detectable VA. Really a joy to drink.

Deep garnet color. Fully developed, med plus aromas of allspice, black olive, meat, mushroom, dried flower, hoisin sauce, dark cherry, star anise, red cherry, prune, raisin, chocolate. Dry, med(+) body, high tannins, high acid, high alcohol, long finish. Really beautiful but the fruits seem pretty ripe for Rioja. More of tertiary notes on the nose and fruits and oak are more prominent on the palate. I think this wine is at its peak but will keep being great in the coming few years.

For pairing, this would be great with dark chocolate. But for classic choices, it would be steak or even a burger. My personal pick would be a fillet steak with shiitake marmalade. It was great with fries. For this wine, I probably prefer beef over lamb personally.

Yet another new batch for me. The usual 2011 base, 20% from solera, dosage 3.3g/l. This time disgorged 10/2021.

It seems to me that as the time on lees the richness is slowly increasing. This bottle has a very rich buttery nose, with some notes of honey.

On the palate there's a very nice balance of brioche, citrus, creamy, apples, lots of different notes coming to the fore with each sip. Overall there's a slightly less toasty/yeasty element than previous batches which I sort of miss, but this is a bit different, not worse.

The finish is clean, crisp, and just slightly drying.

This continues to be a main house champagne for me and excellent QPR at ~US$37.

Trying to get a sense of 2020 Figeac from 375 without proper airtime seemed futile but nonetheless, this provided plenty of charm from PNP.

With that said, if I had to do it all over again from the same format I would decant. 2-3+ hrs at cellar temp and let it warm up in the glass.

At first I was getting some cranberry, cherry and mint. Silky tannins and a long finish. Just a lovely wine in it's infancy.

Been 2 years since my last bottle of this one. pnp'd before dinner. Dark purple in the glass, red fruited nose and something peculiar, I can't quite place. First sips thin with light red fruit. Palate of semi tart red cherry predominantly the first hour. Nice balance with good acid and integrating tannins. Maybe a 90?

2 hours in and the weird nose element comes to the forefront, even more so. It's the very distinct smell of modelling clay that you get on your hands during art class. Unfortunately, it overwhelms the wine completely. You can't get any fruit at that point, it's all clay. I'm going to let the wine sit another hour and see what happens, as it also impacts the taste big time and leaves a very undesirable backend on the palate. 89 at best right now.

3 hours of air and the clay on the nose evolves to some kind of composting vegetal essence and it remains clay on the palate, almost turning 'yeasty' now. I'm beginning to think this has to be some kind of defect as my other bottles did not resemble this profile at all and I've never before come across a fault such as this in all my wine years. I'm stumped....87 or less now.

4 hours in, the nose remains the same and so does the palate. It just isn't moving or improving in any way. I put 8 oz in a sealed glass bottle to try another day, but not holding out hope. Going to avoid giving this one a score for now, due to its obvious flaw.

Addendum: opened the sealed glass bottle the next day and the wine, even though there was no airspace in the bottle, had degraded much further It was not at all drinkable and smelled of clay and composting, stewed plums. Down the drain. No score for this one as it's obviously a severely flawed bottle. My conundrum? Been drinking good wines for 25 years and never, ever come across a flaw such as this. Does anyone have any idea what it could be???

Opens with a slow-rolling wave of fruit - just when you think it's all there, it keeps flowing and reaches a new high watermark. It's juicier and fresher than the 2019 was, and for that reason doesn't evoke quite the same nostalgia or classicism, but it's not a fruit bomb either as we are still talking about something crisp rather than sweet and round. That said, given the pointgasms emanating from all quarters and, quite frankly, the price, I was hoping for some more distinction and personality here. On the first day there's not much to it beside the fruit, some wood that gives it a drying tongue-depressor effect, and tannins that are slightly edgy but enough in the background not to be much of a factor. The next day it's a little bit more interesting aromatically with some bay leaf and tobacco scents and the fruit complexion has turned a few shades darker from red tones to black, with the edginess remaining. That's fine - call it well-structured for aging - but it's not giving much of a preview of what you'll get at the other end.

1/4. 7.5% abv. AP 05. NOSE: beseeching mint limoncello frosting yields to savory earth and raspberry tendril. Broad, pure, and grammatically intricate. MOUTH: among its various contrasts and apparent contradictions, the one that is least avoidable is the wave of luxuriant, sweet texture coincident with fragile, silk paper bones teeming with umami (salted apricot pit, anchovy cheeks.) Weightless cambre back bows demonstrate a complete void of adhesion. Heaping chipped stone grips and curdles fumes of fennel, mint, lemon-lime, black muscat, and pea lily. If I aim to drink the last of four after 2035, then the next one will have to wait until after 2026. 93+
