2001 Château Cos d'Estournel

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

11/12/2023 - Diane (LI) wrote: NR

I haven’t had a Cos d’Estournel in a long time when I had the 2003, which was an abomination. This one is lovely and in a good drinking window. It’s meaty, has dark cherry fruit, and tobacco. Tannins are supple and needed just a little air to smooth the rough edges.

11/13/2023 6:19:00 AM - I hear you regarding the 2003. It’s a vintage that has left me disappointed to the point of selling what I had, and not just Cos. I know there are people who like the 2003 Cos, I just couldn’t enjoy it. It was missing all the markers I look for in a left bank Bordeaux.
Thanks for the comments and I hope you are on the mend.

11/14/2023 6:12:00 PM - I would happily drink any vintage La Mission Haut Brion! The 1 2003 I did like was Sociando Mallet. I feel it is a difficult vintage in all of Europe, but Bordeaux has a way of straightening out with plenty of age, and drinking birth year wines with your daughter is the best reason to stick with it.

Chalky, mouth filling with lemon curd, minerals, and florals, and with hazelnuts on the lingering finish. When I drink this, I ask why even bother with white Burgundy. This more than scratches that itch.

The palate matches the aromatics. Dark fruit, violets, earth, silky with tannins taking over the lengthy finish. Has the stuffing to last longer, but it is immensely enjoyable now.

6/6/2023 3:56:00 AM - I rarely decant, preferring to follow it over a few hours just in the glass. My notes are not saying it improved with air, so I think it is your call. Decanting shouldn’t hurt. Enjoy!

I love the weightless intensity of Kelley Fox Pinots, and this one is particularly beautiful. Lovely dark fruit and herbal aromatics. More minerality on the palate along with the dark fruit and herbs, and some tree bark. No good reason not to drink it now.

  • Comment posted by Diane (LI):

3/29/2023 4:16:00 PM - I honestly don’t know how it will develop. It is so good now, that I wouldn’t hesitate to drink it. I also have 2 more bottles, and if I didn’t have so much wine, I’m sure I would be looking to open one soon.

This is what I want when I drink Chateauneuf du Pape, and it’s why I started out collecting them. So many changed direction but Pegau stayed true to the region. Dark cherry on the nose. On the palate, it is more subdued. It is herbaceous with prominent black pepper, black olive, and tannic. I’m glad to have 2 more, because there is so much life left.

1/22/2023 2:40:00 PM - So do I, and it’s my last vintage of Pegau. I still have 2 more bottles.

Lovely aromas of dark fruit and lead pencil. The wine showed younger on the nose than in the mouth, where I found dried herbs, lead pencil, and fleeting fruit. Just what I hoped for.

A perplexing wine. The nose shows the deep cherry fruit I get in Black Cats, but the palate lacks any character. Little fruit and flat, and a short finish. One of us thought it was shut down, but I thought perhaps low level TCA. More than half a bottle remains, which is unusual for us.

  • Comment posted by Diane (LI):

11/5/2022 3:24:00 AM - For the most part, 2010 has been a wonderful vintage. However, a couple of very old school producers have made hard wines and I wonder if they will ever soften before the fruit fades. I liked Guillemot and Pavelot when released, but have been tough to enjoy ever since. I still have a bottle or two of each of them, and I, too, have my doubts that they will become pleasurable in my lifetime..I wouldn’t be as concerned if I was only 67 :)

12/7/2021 - Robert Pavlovich Likes this wine: NR

The aromatics have really bloomed over the last few years, pretty stellar with complex spice accents to the fruit. On the palate, it’s softened, maybe too much. While pleasant enough, it comes across a bit flat. There’s good sweetness of fruit but not quite the structure or tension to match.

  • Comment posted by Diane (LI):

12/8/2021 5:13:00 AM - Notes on this have been quite disappointing. I have 2 bottles and wasn’t planning on opening one anytime soon, but it almost sounds like it doesn’t have the structure to age and improve. Do you think there is an upside to holding a little longer?

This was not my favorite vintage, but this was the best showing. Dark fruit, olive brine - leaning more towards old world. Acidity seems to be poking out a bit. It has been over 3 years since I had the 2009, and it is coming together, but maybe it needs more time.

  • Comment posted by Diane (LI):

5/18/2021 9:14:00 AM - The note in 2017 was my last 2009. Something went wrong there with a bunch of bottles. Maybe these had faulty corks. Apparently, there was some very good ones based on other CT notes.

1/24/2020 3:06:00 AM - The cork broke and I, too, had to filter, but I only decanted as long as it took me to strain the top half of the wine. I think it could last another 4 years, but it is always a crap shoot with older wines. I think it is worth the risk.

wow... the first of six bottles, and this thing is WOW!!... super young, with massive lift and tension... saw a note mentioning butterscotch (which makes me think premox) but this one was high and tight with loads of acidity, minerals and lemons... just what we like... perhaps time to buy another 6 or 12... I've been pleasantly surprised at the zero premox rate on W. Fevre I've had recently (tho truth be told, I don't let them get past 8 years or so)

  • Comment posted by Diane (LI):

10/24/2019 4:17:00 PM - I mentioned butterscotch but there was nothing that indicated premox, which for me is more apple. I loved the wine. Butterscotch is something I get from young white Burgs, but not Chablis, and that’s why I mentioned it.

I avoided the 2002 vintage, but I recently picked up this bottle. I wish I had a case of it. Beautiful aromatics and a palate that shows ripe cherries, black olives, and cigar box. A slight hollowness in the mid but a nice finish. Fantastic with our rack of lamb.
