2014 Tabarrini Montefalco Sagrantino Colle Grimaldescomore |
2/1/2023 - Jabulani Likes this wine: 90 pointsDark as night, with the merest horizon of ruby on the edges. Rich, complex aromas of dark, mulled fruit and (strangely) celery, with a suggestion of wood-spice and vanilla, tar, ashes and liquorice. A suggestion of alcoholic heat. The palate carries the same intense fruit, remarkably fresh, which washes over the grainy tannins which frame the finish. Bitter coffee, bitter gourd, chewy and dense. |

Too much fruit sweetness, a bit too much alcohol and a bit too easy structure. One tfact baffles me a bit. The price. 10 to 20% cheaper in Germany than in the US. Normally all Oregon Pinots cost about 30% more than in the US. Maybe different bottling for the European market ('cause it tasted so different compared to the other tasting notes)!?!

2/11/2023 12:01:00 AM - No decant, since I was on my own. Enjoyed very slowly, and over three nights. Minor improvement on day two, so a decant is advisable, but the biggest asset to the wine was the food, which was very savoury and quite fatty (lamb pie). Note was written on night 3.
I think I advise opening early, prior evening even, rather than a long decant, if you want to gently extract a little extra fruit-cohesion from the wine. Extra air isn't going to remove the tannin or the bitter character, and there wasn't a huge sediment on my bottle, so the advantages of decanting are minimal.
