2014 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Great Oak Vineyard

Russian River Valley more

4/24/2024 - Jonathan T wrote: 91 points

A very fine pinot noir, but it may not appeal to the drinker expecting a more modern styled pinot noir. It is certainly very pretty on the nose, but on the palate, it is very much tart forward with generous acidity. It has less of the strawberry/cherry typical of Russian River, and more cranberry/raspberry. Does not have the complexity that one may expect from such a famed vineyard in a great vintage, but it was still very tasty.

Extended lees contact... A little unripe apples on the finish, but otherwise a solid Cali chard trying to masquerade as meursault.

Tastes somewhat unformed, like a poor barrel sample. Soft tannins, low acidity. Lots of woody notes give a certain warmth. Mid weight. Blueberries and red fruit notes. Lacks intensity and body. Short finish, straightforward. Drinking now, suspect this will fall apart within a few years.

A more standard profile for Sonoma, with cherries, cola, earth and lots of berries. Restrained in its style.

Still hanging in there, barely.
A perfect cork after over a decade in the bottle easily removed. Consumed over two nights, enjoyed much more on day two. Not as interesting to me as the 2011. I still have more in the cellar to asset again soon.

Deb brought out a bottle of 2009 Joseph Swan Trenton Estate Pinot Noir. She said that she heard me mention it before, so she was anxious to try it. (Deb if you are reading this,I would like to mention the Domaine de la Romanée Conti.) A bit fruitier and darker than the Hirsch, as expected, but every bit as tasty.

Wow. Purchased from the winery direct in 2023. This was outstanding. Of course they are known for the zins and pinots, but for me, man does Swan do wonders with cab too. Until now, I'd only ever had the Trenton Estate cab, but this Steiner one was nearly perfect. Delicious mountain fruit (and still fruity at 29 years!), a lovely acidity runs through it. My only complaint is that the finish is relatively short -- long, I would say, in general, but short for Swan and given how balanced and full-flavored this wine is otherwise. I'd call it a medium finish where, if it had been a longer finish it would be a 98-100.

Pop and pour, drank half the bottle over 2 hours. This wine has a Sonoma pinot profile, but it is more subdued, elegant and thought-provoking. The fruit is more in the background with savory notes in the foreground. This was my first experience with this producer and I am impressed! Its too bad their wine club is a hostage program. I just bought this bottle recently.

Mature in appearance and colour. Burgundian in style. Perfumed, candied cherry and strawberry on the nose. Light and balanced with earthy undertones, and nice acidity and savouriness. Pleasantly surprised and enjoyable Pinot with a bit of age from Russian river. A Californian Pinot for Burg lovers

A bit overripe and muddled on the nose. Orange juice, vanilla, and leather on the palate. Finishes with forest floor notes. I can see what they were going for with this one, but they didn't quite get the structure necessary to attain it.

I thought this was drinking really well tonight. Pretty light - in general, and for Great Oak in particular. This had some lovely orange peel flavors that kept me coming back to the glass. I wish I had one or two more - I wouldn't necessarily hold for long, but I'd love to drink a bit more of this.

My second of three bottles, the prior one being 12/2022. This one showed much better. The wine is now rich and fruity, with some meat overtones and notes of fresh earth. Excellent acidity, almost no tannins, and fruit still dry and slightly tart. Really delicious, and deserving of its 91+ point rating. An interesting contrast to the Crozes-Hermitage wines I’ve been drinking recently.

Possibly the lightest coloured US pinot noir I have had (and I’m a back fan of Oregon Pinot).

Tart cranberry with a hint of decay on the nose. Tart again on the palate, but with quite a pronounced spicy character. Very light. A bit of smoke and VA on both the nose and palate.

Similar to the prior bottle from almost 2 years ago. The main difference is that it didn't quite take the 14.9% alcohol as well as my prior notes suggest. A touch hot here and there. Otherwise it's a low fruit/high savoury Pinot.

garnet colour and medium body. the nose is initially dominated by a green parsley note that takes time to blow off… and then is mainly dark cherry, cranberry and pine needles. very tart in the mouth from entry to finish, the acidic cherry and cranberry fruit notes gain a bit of depth from subtle earthiness and minerality, but complexity is low overall. moderate length.

this wine is the antithesis of the stereotype fruit bomb Pinot… but is no better in that the tartness and acidity are off-balance and there is little complexity. and so, it's a disappointing experience from a producer with whom i've generally had good success (including other vintages from this same vineyard).

14.3% AbV; curious as when this wine was bottled, as the cork is perfectly white with no signs of the expected ~8 years bottle age.

Another fascinating wine from Rod. I'll admit that I didn't much like this upon release, so I fell to the back of the cellar. On a whim (and because the cellar, post-holiday, is depleted), I opened the thing and was very pleasantly surprised. A handful of years has given this wine body, depth, and intrigue. While still a tad hollow on the palate, what is there screams with character, although maybe not what one might call charm. Lemon curd and clove honey with a reductive quality.

This is my second bottle of this in 2023 and this one is way better than the already great previous bottle. Tasting notes below were the same, but this bottle also had a really beautiful acidic lift that made it brighter than previous bottles. I would also add a sort of blood orange note to previous bottles. Just another in a long line of wonderful Swan wines.
