2011 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Cuvée de Trois

Russian River Valley more

5/25/2015 - Arinbraghe Does not like this wine: NR

Typically I love the wines Rod Berglund crafts at Joseph Swan; they can be some of the most compelling Yankee pinots in their brown-spiced, savory red-fruited idiom. This is not one of their greatest hits as the VA that often lightly seasons their pinots is pretty out of control here (even for my highly VA-tolerant palate), prickling the nostrils and marring an otherwise-textbook graceful wine.

Medium body. Spicy. Yet light and balanced in a way. Drinking well now for an 08. A bit boozy.

Absolutely perfect with some barbecued steak. A little fire from the high alcohol, but the huge fruit nicely balanced. Great wine.

Less fruit forward than expected. Drinking very well right now with very silky tannins. Still, lots of fruit, almost to the dark side. Mix of raspberry and blackberry. Earthy with hints of spice. Good body. Long finish.

Decanted for an hour. Cherry cola, lime stone, elderberry, thyme and leather sofa. Such Russian River body of lithe qualities, with an almost syrupy long finish, then ending in a floating manner. An iconic winery producing a fine '12 specimen. The nuances are not holding back, and considering the fact that the wines typically need five years in bottle to truly strut, she is quite available. Drink now - 2023.

A little on the oily side, and very dry. Better as it warmed up. Melon and ripe Golden Delicious apple. A hint of citrus only. Not bad, but I'm more of an Alsace man.

Great Northern Rhone profile. Glad to have half a case of this. Plenty of acidity, some brett-like funk, touch of smoky garrigue, dark ripe fruit. Medium bodied.

Notes of dark fruit, pepper and roasted meat. Medium- to full-bodied and nicely balanced with flavors of dark fruit and pepper. Ends with a nice florally quality. This should drink over for quite a few years. Thanks for sharing, slipstitch.

This is really quite enjoyable and lovely for the price. The nose is filled with violets, black cherry, raspberry, and just a hint of forest floor. The palate is remarkably fresh and vibrant with red berry fruit and a racy acidity that is lovely with food. This absolutely needs food to show well and with a good meal it is very tasty. Definitely not a typical Cali wine and a very good price for what you get.

Orange/brown color/ Nose of caramel. spice. On the palate, this has earth notes, caramel, not a lot of fruit. I think the fruit has faded and left behind only oak. This was better on release than now; I held off too long.

Is there value in Sonoma Zinfandel (Chris H's home): I put this in as an extra bottle to have an aged Zin. There aren't many that age but Swan and Ridge are two that I have in the cellar. This did not show well, but I am not sure if it was the age or what. It was mine and the groups last place wine. Purple/ruby in color. The nose shows cherries and menthol but also a candied quality. On the palate, sour cherries and very tart. It is disjointed at this stage. Not sure what is going on here. Oh well, it happens.

Very, very tasty. Rich and fruity without being overdone. Mocha turned to vanilla oak on the backend. Mint and gerbs. Not totally my style but good and a great value at $25.

A serious wine. Still in good form. Walled with flavour but it somehow didn't complement a bbq leg of lamb. Still a terrific wine but not the right pairing for something as smoky. Shame as probably my best Pinot.

Pale ruby. Nose of soft vanilla and a hint of tinned greens. Palate starts gently but surprising narrow spicy, clove mid-palate. Red fruit. Slightly watery finish. Kinda fun, but might have been better 3 years ago.

After drinking a few bottles I checked the vintage charts because of RR ratings ... In my view this is the lesser vs the 2011. Full bodied with glycerine and legs, straw color, traditional CA nose, well balanced ... but for me lacks the 2011 complexity/minerality. (Based on chart ratings the Swan 2011 lineup is great, a credit to vineyard selection and wine making.) Nothing wrong with this wine and I'm not damning it with faint praise. It is excellent, good tropical flavors and vanilla. But compared to 2011 it is simpler (or needs age ... wines change with time). The 2011 offered complexity in a larger frame, albeit may not appeal to most (don't take this as bias). Nice finish. 90+, can't get to 91 now and memory says 92+ for 2011. This is more my style but lacks the complexity. For those who compare (I also recently drank 2012 Dehlinger ... 89-90).

Very minerally and light in color. Complex flavor and nose. Straw, and tropical flavors. Restrained. Not my favorite, nor is it quite worth the price. Still an excellent Chard, however! Just preference here.
