NobleRottersSydney - Hidden Lable Night (Glass Brasserie, Sydney): {screwcap, 12%} [Andrew] More minty-tinged cool-climate fruit here too, but laced with blackberry and gentle oak. Medium weight and clearly maturing, it’s also got a leathery sort of character to it. Soft tannins, low/medium acid. About ready to drop; an good value at sub-$20.

Juicy. Cherry and plum. Black pepper. Touch of greenness. Blueberry, pleasingly fine gritty tannin on the finish. 89 or 90 but drinking pleasure gets it over the line.

I think this is a little lower on the Moppity snakes and ladders game but in some ways I like it even more than the Single Vineyard from the same year. There is more overt spice and aniseed, the blackberry fruit seems a little fresher. Intensity probably isn't quite at the same level as for the Single Vineyard but the margin isn't great. Very hard to find any flaws and the PQR is higher than a crowd at a Black Oak Arkansas after party.

I am tempted to observe that these wines really love time in the cellar but while the owner sets the parameters, as I understand it he uses contract winemakers and the ones who made this vintage didn't do subsequent years. Use of contract winemakers isn't that unusual and changing them around isn't either, so there is probably a consistent approach but ... I suppose it just means you have to buy a few, try one young and then work it out. Tough gig but someone has to do it.

Continuing my Moppity odyssey (is it just me or does the name make one think of rabbits, like Flopsy and Nipsy) with a brace of the Shiraz that garnered critics praise and porno garlands.

The Shiraz is a more mature beasty compared to the two Cabernets from the same label and year. It is none the worse for it, however. Here we have plum and a little blackberry and quite a deal of earth and some spice for complexity. A very pleasing style that engages without demanding too much. The critics were right to give this the accolades they did - extraordinary value.

Well, well, just when you think you have something pegged, it sometimes happens that you had it pegged alright but in the wrong place. I had pegged this as superior restaurant wine. I think this was right when it was young, but it would be wrong now.

The colour shows dark with good clarity and concentration and only the slightest hint of bricking - and even then only if you squint, hit yourself on the head with the bottle and let some blood dry on your glass. I guess that is the combination of screw cap and cool climate grapes keeping it youthful looking at 10 years of age. Australian reds are usually quite mature by that time.

The nose and palate are a real surprise in terms of pleasure. Classical blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, green leaf, a little earth, all married to a long finish, plenty of intensity and fresh acid. Tannins are not resolved but they are now providing support not asserting themselves.

This is a really superior Australian Cabernet.

The Moppity range is worthy of a Heath Robinson drawing and I have no idea where the various wines fit - I guess price is a guide but there seem to be about 634 wines described as 'Reserve', at least 500 are also 'Single Vineyard' and one is reminded of those armed forces where everyone is a Colonel. Unlike those armies, these wines work. Take a photo of the wine you found that you liked and hope that they haven't decided to play head games by re-naming it with the next vintage. There is a sardonic streak to Mr Brown, I do declare.

Avid Wino wrote a very accurate note on this and he was prescient when in 2015 he wrote that the best was yet to come and that this was a serious wine at quaffer prices.

I recall this vintage got very strong reviews and, as I was living in straitened circumstances at the time, I was keen on the idea of a wine that punched above its price/weight. To my delight I discovered it was also a winery that turned out to be owned by a chap I call a 'friend', although in truth we would objectively be nodding acquaintances at best. We have almost nothing in common and what we do, we approach from radically different perspectives. I say friend because I believe that in a tight place he would not let one down and I respect his mind, in part because we are so different. A good sense of humour also helps. I can call someone a friend even if only meet them once a decade, if there is something of importance there. Swayed by feeling chuffed that this chap had taken a risk and done well, I bought a few bottles, some to consume on the moment and some to put away. It was a big commitment for me in those dark days.

Sadly, I found myself struggling with a sense that these were well made wines with no faults but also little personality. Classic restaurant wines. Generally, you can cellar these but all you will get are old restaurant wines, possibly with some tertiary notes for interest but usually also flatter and duller.

Not so here. These were, in fact, sleeper wines. This is delightful on opening and it gets better over the next two days. I think it shows regionality with cool climate Cabernet, attractive ripe but crunchy fruit. This is lovely wine, better than merely good drinking. The lesson here is that these wines merit time to grow and they will develop personality. Splendid!

Cheapish merlot doesn't get a lot better than this. Simple, ripe, full, but sensible. Shows very good weight for the region. Classy drying tannin late. Unremarkable perhaps but feels very complete at its station.

The colour tells you much: limited fade, no bricking, dark purples still - this has more in reserve.

Lovely nose. Gamey, roasting dish aromas, then dark berries, a whisper of vanilla.

Palate is the fuller end of medium bodied. More rich fruits, sinewy tannin, vanillin again, good flow.

In a sweet spot. Nice drinking now but this should cruise on for another decade.

{screwcap, 14%} Ruby red. Youthful nose of cool cabernet; your classic currants, a hint of spearmint, underlying vanilla oak. Fresh palate, very modern and clean, with a menthol character, eucalyptus, black fruits. Low powdery tannins, medium acidity, medium weight, slightly warm finish. Reasonably even on the palate, just-medium length finish. Ok wine for everyday drinking. Not sure cellaring is worth the space though.

{screwcap, 14%} Garnet red. Fairly muted nose of peat, malt, prune. Some toasty oak character. Definitely maturing, if not at end of plateau. Palate has moderate acid, a twist of sweet blackberry jam, a hint of raisin and fig, low/medium dusty tannins. It’s a touch on the simple side, showing some cold-climate character, with a spearmint undertone. Nice mid-palate presence, dry, but finishes short/medium at best. Drink up.

Received a bottle as a gift for a significant birthday and mistakenly put it in long term cellaring thinking it was a better wine than it is. Recently discovered it was a cheap red so cracked it open expecting to be able to use it in tonight's bolognaise sauce (at a stretch).

Surprised it's actually drinkable. Light bodied and generally underwhelming notes but a good start to the night with some easy quaffing

Some cassis and cedar on the nose with very faint pepper on the palate.

Thanks to my tight fisted friend for an interesting unintended long term experiment. Your frugality is noted!

Browning on the rim, with a dusky hue befitting its age.

High-toned nose. Tobacco, gravel, baking bone and some darker inky, almost tarry notes. A slight hint of leaf adds varietal charm and lift. Autumnal.

The palate’s richer than the nose suggests. A burst of blackberry and currants hits mid palate, wrapping a robe around slightly gravelly tannin. Leathery/gamey touches add complexity and echo the nose.

Drinking really well now but three-five years will let the tannin mellow further and lend a magic carpet ride.

Outstanding value! This was retailing for AUD20-25 on release, I got mine for AUD17. Happy days.

A deep, rich wine. It has a tight texture and construction like you would expect from cool climate Shiraz, however a big rich flavor of dark forest fruits that you don't encounter from other climate regions such as orange.

This drinks well now, however previous vintages i've explored (2009 and 2010) have aged extremely well, and I'm excited to see what time will do to this.

{screwcap, 14%} Plums and cranberries; blends some slightly sour aromatic fruit with a distinct sweetness on the palate, an impression heightened by soft low level dusty tannins but also fairly discreet acid. It’s a bit confected on the palate for what purports to be cool climate cabernet, but doesn’t finish too sweetly for its medium weight body, although it tends towards warmth. Not for cellaring.

Appearance: clear, medium purple
Nose: medium plus intensity; aromas of blackcurrant, lifted floral notes of roses, black cherry, kirsch, red cherry, minty, candied fruit, cloves, cedar. Youthful.
Palate: dry, medium plus flavour intensity, flavours confirm with nose. Structure wise, it has high acidity, medium plus tannins, high alcohol, medium plus body. The finish is medium plus.
Overall, it’s a very good wine. Can drink now but has potential for further ageing.
