Last bottle and final word - good stuff! Still going strong with powerful tannins and good acidity. Fruit is still there and it’s all integrated nicely. I’ve gone through a case of this and would happily go through another!

Decanted off virtually no sediment. Gave this a few round trips through an aerating decanter. Dense nose unlike other varietals I've experienced. Palate before food dominated by drying tannins, flavors start to emerge on finish. Ok, with rack of lamb this really showed its glory. Tannins muted by the meat let the ample body emerge. Will guess this wine will continue to positively evolve for at least another 5.

Soon as I took the cork off the aromas came bursting out. Dark red fruit, iron, perfume, game, cheese, and dried herbs. Flavors of red plum, red currant, raspberry, tomato, spice, and menthol. medium finish with medium plus acidity. Very good with pizza, olives, and sage-based dishes.

Fine grain, tight tannins throughout, with leather and tobacco flavor dominating. Smooth and supple with a tightness toward the end when the tannin shows the most. Quite nice drinking.

Total delight city – And my wife offered up a perfect tasting note descriptor – it smelled and tasted like when you open a packet of Lemon lime KoolAid – That is it smells like citrus with the texture or sensation of sweetness but without actually tasting sweet. Add in a crystalline quality – and boom, there you have it!

Decanted 2 hours. The Sagrantino grape gives this wine great body and aroma. Nice full berry aroma upon decanting. Great strong legs w/light tar nose on initial pour, which held steady throughout the bottle. Flavor of ripe plums, figs w/pleasing finish. Served w/Smoked cheddar & Manchego cheese appetizer. Entree of red sauce & bucatini. Wine went well with the meal!

I never dreamed I would be writing these words in a review of a Montefalco Sagrantino. Slowly, listen, read my lips: this is... a Merlot lovers... Sagrantino. What were all the other Sagrantinos doing while they were deep in their cool and rocky cellars? Lifting weights, bulking up, adding layers of muscle. And what was this Sagrantino doing? Polishing and filing down those iron hard tannins. And the main fruits in this wine are not intense black currants and briary blackberry, but instead closer to plum and black cherry. Now, the texture and mouth feel is not so much firm, grippy, and mouth stripping, but instead closer to soft, rounded, and lush. And finally, we do not have to patiently wait 15 or 20 years for the wine to become fully enjoyable, but instead the wine is open, forward, and delightfully enjoyable sooner. Is this Sagrantino a lesser, scaled back, or thinner wine? Not at all. This wine is dry and tannic, with the main difference that the tannin is less grippy and domineering. Yes, this wine is an atypical Sangrantino, but not a lesser one, just another fine and more elegant expression of the potential for how fruit and tannin may be woven into the fabric of a wine.

Mild nose, med+ acidity, some herbs, spices, blue fruit and soil tucked behind what currently is a full-on tannic assault. Promising, but give it a few more years and check back. Your gums might be numb until then anyway.

Nose: Blackberry, cranberry, herbal note
Palate: Tannins have nicely softened, not totally melted, so in my opinion the wine is its ideal drinking window.
Drink now and within the following 5 to 6 years.

Colour: intense garnet
Nose: tertiary, developing, medium intensity. Red and black plum, mulberry, bramble, Davidsons plum. Pomegranate? Prunes. Warm earth, leather, eucalyptus leaves. Cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, cedar. Cough syrup, liquorice, tar.
Palate: dry, medium(+) acidity, medium(+) tannins (drying and structured), high alcohol (15%), full bodied. Medium(+) length finish, pronounced intensity. Red and black plum, mulberry, bramble, Davidsons plum. Pomegranate? Prunes, warm earth, leather — but less prominent than on the nose. Eucalyptus leaves, menthol. Cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, cedar. Conclusions: very good. Can drink now, but suited to further ageing. Very complex with lots of character — a wine one could examine for hours!

It's been some time since I had such an amazing wine. Lots of sediment on the bottle side. Dark ruby red with orange ring. Open bouquet with extremely ripe and highly developed fruit, yet solid structure and tannin presence to guarantee many more years of development and life in the bottle. Long length and pleasant finish. Worked extremely well with balsamic vinaigrette and olive oil to a complex meat sauce and pasta. Well done!

Dark ruby/garnet with hints of tar on the fairly subdued nose. Initial taste shows a palate dominated by fierce acidity and drying tannins with just a few hints of black fruit somewhere underneath.

Decanted for 3 1/2 hours which opened it up. The high acidity and powerful tannins are still there, but are balanced out to some extent by sweet black cherry fruit with some tar and liquorice/star anise coming through.

At this stage this is a bit of a beast of a wine, powerful, full-bodied and requiring suitably robust food - in our case slow cooked duck legs, which were a great match.

While it is just about approachable at this stage, another 5-10 years would allow it to really settle and I'm sure it would start to develop some really interesting tertiary complexity.

100% Sagrantino. Fermented and macerated with the skins for 3-4 weeks in 10 000-liter French oak vats. Aged in old 3000-liter botti casks, tonneaux and barriques (a small portion renewed annually) for 18 months. 14,5% alcohol.

Dense and rather opaque blackish-red color with an evolved pomegranate hue. The nose feels surprisingly restrained, somewhat evolved and a bit earthy with somewhat lackluster aromas of wizened dark berries, some gravelly mineral tones, a little bit of tobacco, light woody notes of savory old oak, a hint of leather and a touch of dried dark fruits. The wine feels firm, dry and somewhat austere on the palate with a medium body and slightly understated flavors of chokeberries and fresh dark plums, some leathery tones, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light nuances of pouch tobacco, a hint of earth and a ferrous touch of blood. The overall feel is enjoyably structure-driven with the high acidity and tough, grippy tannins. The finish is firm, dry and grippy with a dry, slightly reticent aftertaste of ripe sour cherries and brambly black raspberries, some dark plummy tones, a little bit of gravelly earth, light notes of leather, a sanguine hint of iron and a touch of savory wood. The rather high alcohol lends a little bit of warmth to the aftertaste.

I sort of enjoyed the wine's austere, dead-serious and very structure-driven style, but seeing how understated the fruit department was here - and knowing how great Scacciadiavoli Sagrantinos can be when they're good - the wine was sort of a let-down. The flavors felt both quite underwhelming and surprisingly evolved for the age, which makes me wonder if 2014 was a poor vintage in Umbria as well. The tough, unyielding structure would call for another 10 to 15 years of aging, but the fruit department feels like it is quite close to its peak now and most likely won't hold on for much longer. The wine just can't be aged for long enough for the structure to resolve. While an enjoyably rustic and VERY structure-driven wine in its own right, it is a bit unbalanced as a whole. This wine does nothing but encourages me to keep my distance from Italian 2014 reds.
