Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

Wine had been stored in temperature controlled cellar since purchase. When first opened there was some skunk that blew off after decant. Definitely on the wrong side of the hill but not far from the peak. Fading away was the fruit which is not unexpected for a wine this old. If you have in your cellar get a nice steak and open up your bottle. You will not not disappointed now but who knows in a few years.

From a 1.5L magnum.

Absolutely incredible. 25 years old, and still kicking!
Acidity is still bright & shining. Tannins have mostly resolved, but there is still just enough to show they’re present.

Unreal how that Viader Liquid Cashmere nose of perfumed violets, candied dates and cassis evolves and matures with time. The taste is incredible - red plum, cassis, leather, tobacco, and some mature mountain herbs. It drinks more like Bordeaux than it does Napa

This was quite a magical experience, as I’ve never had a wine more than 20 years old AND Viader’s Liquid Cashmere is arguably my favorite wine across multiple vintages. So glad we decided to open this one now, as the days are getting numbered.

6 California Cabernets Tasted (Hi-Time Wine Cellars, Costa Mesa, Ca.): Nice rich cabernet, tasty fruit, briary nose and taste, needs 2-3 years to peak, but only good not great.

11 years young, and still plenty of life left. Crazy good acidity for such a rich wine. Yet, somehow, the style is very Bordeaux-esque with the Howell Mountain terroir shining brightly. Brambly blackberry, plum, cassis and tobacco mesh well with mountain herbs. Nose brings about mature blackberry & plum with a floral and spice back.

The finish is light despite being so rich on the front and mid palate - a perfect tightrope balance of power and finesse (how is that even possible to have such a light finish?!). Light comes from the acidic finish, which gives this wine the ability to age. But if I had any critique, the light finish lends itself to be just a hair short.

Overall this is a stellar wine, just shy of being a legendary one for this vintage. The Viader family always find a way to take the terroir and make a Bordeaux-esque sophistication to Howell mountain terroir.

Two hour decant. Notes of rich plum, black currant, tobacco, forest floor, and subtle bell pepper and orange peel. Smooth French vanilla oak. Round, juicy chewy tannins. On the acidic side for the first 2-3 hours and then it was silky smooth. Folks that give this a long decant or another 5 year of bottle time will be rewarded.

This is showing exactly how I hoped. The Cabernet Franc and Merlot mixed with Howell Mountain and age producers cocoa dusted black cherries and currants. There is a mountain rockiness and dark earth. The tannins are mostly resolved but with a lingering bitter edge to remind you where it comes from. I remember meeting Delia Viader when the 1989 was released and being charmed by both the fine intellect of the person and the wine. I grabbed a 6-pack at an auction last year after not having really followed the wines in ages. I'm glad I did.

LWTF - Napa Tasting (London): Aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant, wood smoke and minerals. Clean lines, the palate is sweet on entry but not overdone and has an elegant smoothness accented by a lively acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins. Plenty of fruit fills the mid-palate with cassis and blackberry and that line of minerality throughout. I rather liked this wine.

Popped, poured and consumed over the next couple of hours. Lush deep purple color; black berry, currant and violet nose.

Right out of the gate, this one is special and You need help I need help coming in as it spends time the glass, It gains considerable complexity. Deeply rich and integrated, it is reminiscent of a high-end Chateauneuf du Pape. Round, layered black fruit dominates up front, with wonderful savory notes filling in on the mid-palate.. The finish features soft, velvety tannins and a long satisfying backend.

This is a remarkable achievement, and I am quite impressed with this wines’ development. I’m pleased to note that I have one bottle remaining from my initial case purchase. I suspect this one is currently in a state that is as good as it gets, so I will likely uncork that last bottle in the next year or two. When I do, I’ll report back on its condition

Bravo!

First glass, poured with aeration tool.

Deep garnet, significant legs noticeable in the glass. Clean, low to medium intensity the nose, heavy black fruits: cooked blackberry, black plum, black current. Toasted earth and charcoal notes. I will let it sit in the bottle for a bit before next glass. I’m liking it more as it open.

Decanted 40 minutes before serving

Color: garnet red with signs of aging on the rim

Nose: God I love the nose on the Viader! Violet-like perfume with strong notes of candied dates, dried blackberry bramble and cassis.

Taste: Age has rewarded this wine very well. Dried fruits of blackberry bramble, leather, mature herbs, chocolate, espresso, smoke & earth.

At 15.1% , the body is noticeable but never overpowering or hot. High acid with mellow yet still drying tannins.

Overall, this is a stunning wine. Drink these 08s now until 2030

Color: borderline purple, with signs of aging on the rim
Nose: dried plum, spiced cola & cherry.

Taste: smoothed-put tannins, yet still dry on the finish. Full-bodied, but hardly overpowering. Drinks like a Bordeaux with drying spice & earth on the finish, yet still very much a Howell Mountain wine with that signature dried blackberry, tobacco, and just a smidge of Mountain herbs underlying the heavy fruit.

Overall, this has aged quite well, and can see it going to the 20 year mark. Complex, big, and very much a Bordeaux meets Howell mountain type of wine. Love it!
