Served at the convivial Sud 777.

How attentive the service is here! I was wiping the edge of the glass but before I finished, a waiter came in with a new glass.

Amongst the World’s top 50 in Mexico City, Sud 777 is currently the only restaurant with exclusively Mexican wines by the glass. It is my favourite restaurant of Mexico City for excellence in both food and wine. On the latter, the Wine Spectator seems to have agreed in 2021 & 2022. Though dynamic music played in all the restaurants I visited, the extra interior space made this the only restaurant with a convincingly social vibe.

A predominance of Syrah over Tempranillo.

Dark cherry red. Ripe, expansive grapefruit peel, cinnamon, allspice, clover and cherry on the nose. A voluptuous and creamy taste of red fruits enveloped in black pepper and a herbal padding. Very smooth. So far my favourite wine of Mexico. 96 points

Served at the delicious Restaurante Rosetta. So good to be back! Hello Mexico City, greetings gentle Rosetta.

Nose of ripe cherries, black fruits, marzipan and sweet spice.

The palate has tension and a little textural resistance. Its freshness is reminiscent of fresh goat cheese. Perhaps this is a wine to study the effect of the yeasts known for a tendency to convert sugar into lactic acid.

Nice tones of cherry and sweet spices. Not as clean and elegant as an Hermitage but still a good Syrah blend. 93 points

2017 Vinisterra Pedregal

Valle de San Antonio de las Minas Syrah Blend, Syrah more

4/18/2023 - mtnmeister Likes this wine: 92 points

An immensely elegant and distinguished wine. It is the signature of our “Pedregal” vineyard in San Antonio de las Minas, Guadalupe Valley. Medium intensity ruby red color, with predomination of ripe fruit aromas such as red cherry, blackcurrant, prune, combined with cinnamon and clove, mineral notes and wet stone. Complex and intense. In the palate the wine’s intense, big, full bodied, it confirms the ripe fruit, mineral and spices aromas, dark chocolate and tobacco leaves. Powerful and elegant with mature and persistent tannins. It is ready to drink and can be kept up to 10 years or more. (From winery web page)

Interesting Syrah/Tempr blend from Mexico. High ABV at 13.9% stands out. Plenty of fruit upfront, hot but not too sweet, with a quiet finish.

N: RIPE berries slightly atop toast

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays within hailing distance of the init frt as it fairly seamlessly evolves into a LONG finish with a tangy/swtness to the dusty tannins. NEEDS through '20, then approaching its 10th? My VG+/EXC-; [I saw no other source with which to compare this vendor's $31.95.]

Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 3 *shared* bottles] from 04/19/19 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Syrah 65% & Tempranillo 35% from San Antonio de las Minas, Valle de Guadalupe, & Valle de Santo Tomas; Aged 17 mos in FR oak (15% new);

N: RIPE berries with notes of smoke & earth; Intensity lurking?

P: Med, poss MF, body; RNDISH entry with ALMOST swtish frt (approaching threshold R.S.) met by an astringent pucker which pretty much resolves by the LONG, balanced finish with a tangy/SWTNESS to the virtually non-existent, dusty tannins. For now & probably through '22. My VG+, though fans of the "flirting with R.S." style would likely give more. [This vendor's $22.95 is $4 < wine-searcher's lone, current listing.]

N: RIPE, almost swt smelling, poss jammy, berries; Intensity lurking?

P: MF body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt (approaching threshold R.S.?) met by an astringent pucker which quite mitigates by the LONG, balanced finish with a tangy/SWTNESS to the considerable, yet innocuous, DUSTY tannins. DESERVES through '19, then easily making its 10th. NICELY done in an "ample" style! My EXC-. [I saw no other source with which to compare this vendor's $39.95.]

N: Cherries slightly atop vanilla with notes of earth, poss flowers?

P: LM body; NICE, almost swtish ft met by somewhat biterish astringency which only slightly mitigates by the LONG, very, VERY slightly bitter finish with the ULT sense being of bitterSWTNESS to the very, VERY fine tannins. NEEDS into, poss through SPRING '19, then drinking through '22. Comparable to a SOLID CdR, though I suspect its pricing will STILL tend to get it overlooked. 14.8% ABV; My VG+/EXC-. @ Pujol D.F. (Mexico City)

Full bodied, deep, rich garnet, high alcohol
Lots of expressive floral traits and black fruit
Well balanced, dry, solid wine. Lots of dark fruit, some leather, long finish. Perfect for food pairing or drinking alone.

I was blown away by the wine. This is by far the best Mexican produced wine I have ever consumed. Pujol was good as well. :)

I had this wine at Au pied de couchon in Mexico City, just to challenge the French tradition with a Mexican wine. 92 points come from several impressions: Mineral, long lasting in nose and mouth, cherries, oak, fast legs that speak of a well balanced body and not of a weak one. No sulphites or the like. Actually,it felt as wines perhaps tasted at humble road hostels 100 years ago: pure, refreshing, restful yet provocative.

Intense red. Spices, wood, leather. Long and persistent on mouth. I accompanied this wine with spicy chicken and basmati rice. It turned out a great combination. Cascabel would go well with mole.

Valle de Guadalupe Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

6/26/2012 - amolinas wrote: NR

About the Wine: 65% Tempranillo / 35% Grenache.

This wine has a typical "bajacalifornian" personality of intense fruit and body. Tempranillo structures the exceptionally fruit-bearing and vivacious character of the Grenache into a powerful and expressive blend.

Vintage: 2005.

Varietals: Tempranillo / Grenache.

Wine Type: Red Wine.

Origin: México.

Appellation: San Vicente Valley and Santo Tomás Valley, Baja California.

Elaboration: 17 months in 40% new French and American oak barrels.

Winemakers: Christoph Gaertner.

Tasting Notes:

The wine is garnet red color, and has intense aromas of mature red fruits, cherry, fruit in COMPOTA, dried peaches, coinciding with tones of spices, white pepper and CLAVO (CLOVE) on a delicate FUND OF NOTES from its time in barrel.

After the initial intense flavors, the mouth is expressive, underlining the flavors of red fruit and spices, in addition to the mineral notes; the powerful and burly structure is confirmed with well-integrated tannins and a long finish.

Drink now through 2014.

Pairing:

Mexican dishes of intense flavors and piquant like some soups and stews; even cook with the wine! Also pairs well with red meat and greasier meals.

Technical Data: Alc: 13.9%

A blend of Syrah and Mourvedre this wine shows it's class immediately. Done in a very international style that feels more like a top wine from Spain more than Mexico. Very smooth palate and balanced fruit and oak flavors. This wine would be great to bring to a blind tasting to illustrate the quality of the Mexican upper end wines. It opened nicely over the few hours we consumed it and seemed the most age worthy of the tasting. Overall this small production wine could be a flagship like bottling for Mexico in international circles, that is if it ever makes it out of the country.
