Gold shiny yellow. Rich honey with herbs and lush flavor. Hint of a mature, secondary funk. Wonderful for such an old white wine.

Serious 'French-funk' and greenery on the nose. Very high acidity that may be too much from some "New World" wine fans but perfect for me. Cool, hard, firm red fruits. Compelling and interesting instead of inst-pleasure.

2005 The Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon

3/15/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 94 points

A classic red color. Rich aromas of red fruits. Palate is cassis and cherry with a great texture. Utter smoothness with very pure strawberry flavors. Soft tannins and enough acidity to hold it all together. A very good modernist Napa Valley Cabernet.

2011 Jaffurs Petite Sirah Thompson Vineyard

Santa Barbara County more

3/12/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 93 points

The color is obviously darker than most wines and it draws your attention to what is coming for you. It is quite full bodied and dense, but at the same time silky smooth. The wine warms you from the inside - this has some serious alcohol content - but what it may lack in balance, it makes up with pleasure. There's not much "tastes like this" in my tasting notes because it was too easy just to enjoy.

Doubt there is much longevity or subtly, but let leave that stuff for other wines.

2011 Jaffurs High Tide

Santa Barbara County Red Rhone Blend more

3/12/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 92 points

A Chateauneuf-du-Pape hiding in Southern California.

This pops with delicious red fruit at the beginning and then the fruit blackens with hints of smoke at you sip on it. Serious presence of herbs and black olives. Nice value and admirable class and restraint for Jaffurs.

2012 Jaffurs Syrah

Santa Barbara County more

3/12/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 91 points

Great value here.

An adult, solid, professional Santa Barbara Syrah. There is good medium+ body with good flavors of black cherry, charred meat, black olive, and great smoothness. I have no doubt that this will be much better in 2 or 3 years.

I've never found this kind of acidity in an American Viognier before. Crisp and refreshing, but full of the unctuous midpalate honey and herbal cream. A very nice full-bodied Santa Barbara White Wine.

3/7/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 89 points

Nice solid red color. Explosive aromas that are pretty nice. A juicy and meaty wine with lots of fatty hedonism. Mild length to the soft finish.
This is a pleasant one dimensional wine. Nothing wrong here, but it is what it is and nothing else. Poor value for money.

Glowing purple color. Spicy herbs, pipe tobacco, and menthol in lush red fruits on the nose. Melted blueberry pie with subtle hints of many types of stone and smoke. Touch of "bitey" tannin on finish. This needs a bit of time, but I have to believe it will only get better.

Light color a soft pink-purple. Wonderfully delicious with strong obvious acidity, pure raspberries, and the tiniest hint of milk chocolate. A light 'truly-burgundian' take on Pinot Noir. You can almost feel the salt water spray of the Sonoma Coast.

2012 Lioco Chardonnay Hanzell Vineyard

Sonoma Valley more

3/7/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 95 points

Wow, this is one of the most amazing California Chardonnay's I've ever tasted!

A pristine yellow color. Aromas of hay and fresh wild honey. Nice acidity, but a firm, tight mouthfeel that opens up to creaminess as you hold it in the mouth. Medium+ body. There is great purity here as well as richness. The finish really persists a long time, so this is a candidate for moderate aging as well.

I've rarely seen such a sophisticated and confident American Chardonnay. Kudos

2012 Domaine Tempier Bandol

Mourvedre Blend, Mourvedre more

3/4/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 90 points

Bring on the "French Funk." This was blatant barnyard on the nose from the very first minute. Everyone at the tasting was talking about it.

The nose was so pronounced that the gamy red fruit with garrigue and herbs was almost completely overshadowed.

This is a good wine, but not the greatness that Tempier has been in the past for me. I'd recommend aging a few years to see if everything here will come together and get better integrated.

When I put this to my nose, I was greeted by perhaps the most beautiful wine aromas that I've had in a long time. And it wasn't just me. Everyone at the wine tasting was commenting on the nose.

IT IS WORTH THE RETAIL PRICE FOR JUST THE NOSE ALONE!

This is a medium+ bodied classic Syrah with very nice acidity and subtle hints of meat, smoke, and black stone.

But Wow for that nose!

Red

2010 Bonny Doon Vineyard Syrah Jespersen

Edna Valley more

3/1/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 93 points

A wild and delicious style of Syrah that is for those who really understand the crazy, wildness that cool-climate Syrah can become. There is a purity and refinement to the fruit, but then the wild green peppers (Pablano?) and spices come crashing through. This wine would thrive with rich gamy meals. Just the right hint of funk on the finish.

2012 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard

Walla Walla Valley more

3/1/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 94 points

GIVE THIS MORE TIME!
More a monument than an enjoyable wine at this point. The nose has the classic Cayuse funk that borders on brett but doesn't quite get there. Most people (myself included) love it, but not all will.
The color and a palate are dark and dense. In fact, the wine seems quite closed down. I would give another 5 years before revisiting.

Smooth and complex. The classic Napa Cabernet story. This is chocolate cherry with a bloody meaty red fruit character with even more milk chocolate. Very culty. Lush and classic. Probably will improve with a couple years, but very few will let it get there.

Dark red fruits and hard crushed stone. A low acid wine but with big serious minerality. A stone monster that is awkward now, but certain to mature into an austerely beautiful Napa Cabernet in 5 to 10 years.

One of the best Young Chateaneufs I've ever tasted!

This has all of the amazingly sexy fruit of the 2009, but elevates to another level with strong serious framing tannins. Red fruits dominate with serious purity and black fruits slide in to add complexity. This is a beautiful long-lasting C9.

This is a sexy beast!
Very luscious sexy Grenache fruit. Pure a scrumptous pure hedonism, but keep in check by very well integrated acidity. One of the best young VTs that I've ever tasted. After 2 hours open, firm powerful tannins emerge from the fruit and give me great hopes for the longevity of this wine.

1/7/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 91 points

Young and aggressive. Probably a lot of Syrah and Mourvedre because I tasted smoked meat, white pepper, hard black plum, some garrigue. All that was spices in a pure hard Grenache red-fruit. Not very sophisticated for VT, but solid wine.

2008 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau

Red Rhone Blend more

1/7/2015 - austinbeeman Likes this wine: 88 points

Three bottles were tasted with identical notes.

This 2008 was one of the weakest tasting versions of VT that I've yet come across. It was prematurely old with very minimal tannins or acid. The fruit came off kind of stewed and very much into secondary flavors of leather, tobacco, vanilla, caramel, and dark smooth red fruits. Decent length to the finish, but this is wine that is peaking.
