2009 Hermann J. Wiemer Dry Riesling

Finger Lakes more

Perhaps the first truly dry Riesling I've had. I was surprised you could lose so much sweetness but still be in unmistakenly Riesling. Dry and crisp, with lemon peel and green apple. Loved it with spicy Thai food, yet it wasn't cloying once the food was gone.

The first time I'm disappointed with this wine. Maybe we got a bad barrel, but this bottle seemed WAY over oaked. All my favorite qualities were there in the background, but they couldn't punch through an oaky mouthful of wood.

Everything I love in a Napa cab. Decanted 2 hours. Full nose of dark berries, oak and dried herbs. On the palate, fruit forward yet tremendously balanced. Cassis, cherry compote, oak, leather and earth. Tannins are very present yet silky. Quite drinkable with enough air. Wish I had a case to watch its evolution. Alas, this is my one and only.

A beautiful, well integrated syrah. Nose is full of jammy raspberry, black current, licorice and graphite. Palate is filled with smoke, earth, toasty oak and a range dark berries and dried fruits. Tannins are very present, yet round and well integrated showing clear potential for aging. Outstanding QPR.

Wild wine. Nose full of dark cherry, smoke and leather. Palate has the unmistakable flavor of a charcoal barbecue just ignited with lighter fuel. Yes, cherry, leather and chocolate are all there, but I can't shake the flavor of charcoal briquettes. Tannins are easy, soft and round. Overall, very interesting but I can't see drinking this with any frequency.

Likely the best CA chard I've had the pleasure of drinking. Nose of lemon peel, oak, slight tropical fruits. On the palate, tremendous integration of fruit, oak, slight baking spices, perfect acidity and a very pleasing minerality. With all that, still very clean with a nice long palate. My new benchmark.

I really like this. Dense, dark wine with nose of black cherry and smoke. Palate is deep yet fresh and well balanced. Black cherry, blackberry, slight cocoa and anise. Tannins are clearly present but soft and round. Excellent QPR and one of my new every day, go to wines.

Nice nose of earth, cocoa, pencil shavings. Flavors of dark and dried fruits, cocoa, gaphite, earth, subtle anise. Tannins are soft, round and not very present even when popped and poured. Overall, easy drinking and excellent QPR.

Originally I panned this wine because of overwhelming tannins. This time I had it with a braised brisket. The rich meet led off the tannins so the rest of he wine got to shine. And shine it did with bright cherry flavors juxtaposed by oak, cocoa and plum. Again, with the right meal the alcohol seems well integrated and not overtly present. As an aperitif, this wine is a fail. Give it some air and enjoy it with a rich meat and you will be rewarded.

Full nose of red berries with hints of herb, spice, vanilla and very slight licorice. On the palette, tart fruit followed by vanilla, slight oak, and spice on a racy, medium bodied frame. Nice, long finish. Drinking well now but will likely improve over the next year or two.

Beautiful wine. Big nose of raspberry, blackberry and cassis. The palate is concentrated and well rounded with flavors of bramble, licorice, spice and cedar. Mouth feel is great with silky tannins and a long finish. Shoulda bought more.

Surprisingly pleasing nose right out of the cellar with fruit, vanilla and oak. On the palate this is a bit of a fruit bomb with grape, blueberry and cassis. The short, somewhat bitter finish is this wines primary weakness. Still, a decent drinker for the price.

This is a big, extracted Pinot that is, unfortunately marred excessive heat. There is a noticeable concentration of red and dark berries, with hints of earth, spice and pleasing funk all draped in a haze of excessive booze which dulls the entire experience.

Disappointed. This is a big, hot syrah. While the bones are there with flavors of chocolate, licorice and coffee, these elements are poorly integrated leaving me feeling more like I'm being clubbed than caressed. And it's 14.9 booze hangs over this wine like a dense fog, getting in the way of any real enjoyment. Sadly, I thing time will only marginally help this wine.

Nice upfront but tannins are tight and gripping, spoiling the finish. I let this breath in the bottle for 1 hr, then .5 hrs in the glass. This wine certainly needs more time, but am dubious it will improve greatly.

Nice, but nothing special. Characteristically Pinot with red berries, tobacco and pleasant Pinot funk. This is a thin wine that falls off quickly and could use a bit more acidity. Worked nicely with grilled salmon but was overwhelmed by roasted red peppers.
