5/10/2015 - Goldstone Likes this wine: NR

Sunday Dinner on the Beach (Yin Yang Coastal, Ting Kau Village, Tsuen Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong): Decanted for 2 hours - not enough. Totally opaque black-red in colour. Nose is lush and really deep - classic clean and precise Colgin signature. Similar palate - silky and succulent and very poised but rather too primary at the moment. Good length but can only get a whole lot better. More fruit-driven than the 2002 I drank with Ann Colgin a year ago. Preferred not to score it as didn't give it enough contemplation.

Sunday Dinner on the Beach (Yin Yang Coastal, Ting Kau Village, Tsuen Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong): Decented for 5 hours before serving - the cork has been touched less than 3mm by the wine and it looks like it was bottled yesterday. Colour is similar - very youthful blue -purple that only emerged from the initial totally inpenetrable black with 5 hours of decanting. Nose is very deep and ripe but extremely reticent black plum. Palate is black (coal, plum, asphalt, liquorice stick)....monoloithic and inpenetrable but so precisely-hewn...like a black granite sculpture. Incredible power on the finish - wave after wave of deep growling power. Still too young to be other than headachey at this stage. Brilliant potential - 92+ for now but could well develop to 95-96 with 10 more years. One of the very best products of the 'Hunt for the Next Grange' that Runny and I undertook in around 2007.

Sunday Dinner on the Beach (Yin Yang Coastal, Ting Kau Village, Tsuen Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong): Light yellow gold colour - no sign of age. Nose of matured oak, lemon and clam shells with seaweed-covered rocks on the shore. Palate is is rich, opulent, oaky, rounded and harmonious, with lots of roasted lemons and enough acidity to keep it very fresh. Powerful and muscular but very lean-muscled. Big reverberance on the end. Always a delight and a crowd-pleaser. Totally blew out a Gaja Gaia & Rey Chardonnay 2009 that costs over 4 times the price.

Sunday Dinner on the Beach (Yin Yang Coastal, Ting Kau Village, Tsuen Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong): Lemony gold colour. High but somehow bass notes of lemon on the nose. Palate is round, warm nettles (which I don't like), sun-warmed lemon skins (which I do like) and good unobtrusive oak treatment. Fun but not as good as other vintages I have drank....definitely not worth the entry price, especiallly when drank alongside the US$40 Ridge Santa Cruz Chardonnay 2007.

From a magnum decanted an hour before serving. No detailed notes but this had a lovely open nose and a very clean and approachable palate that perfectly complimented some serious rib-eye steak. I was impressed how well this drinks so young but you probably do need the steak to go with it. My one neutral observation is that it is too young to show any length.

Decanted for 5 hours before serving. Black-red jeweled semi transparent. Is much more a purple than a black red now. Nose is absolutely gobsmackingly good - linear, black tar on 100 variations, touch of high piano note nail polish. Wow, I can lose myself in this nose. Palate is sharp, black coal, intense, linear, monolithic but in a really complicated way that will open to multi-dimensional in 5-10 years or more but with already accessible black fruit. Still a work in progress but huge progress since I last drank it. Intellectual compared to the hedonistic Pichon Lalande 1989 we drank alongside it. I preferred this to the Lalande, marginally, but I can see why 95% of people might prefer the Lalande, especially when you are paying this amount of money.....the Lalande is an open and tactile woman you can immediately caress and get a response from whereas the Pingus is an almost too beautiful high cheek-boned younger beauty who doesn't yet know how to drop her aloofness.

Decanted for 4 hours before serving. Glorious ruby deep rich jewel brightness semi- transparent. Nose is glorious damp earth, cedar, damp autumnal bracken. Fully open and singing. Palate is succulent semi-confit blackberry and black currant, lots of cassis, opulent, hedonistic, multi-layered, almost a meaty gravy element to it. Totally open but years ahead of it. Heady, rich, reverberant, great length. A slightly astringent element of black tar right on the finale shows it has the tannic backbone to go for a long long time. Fantastic but just not quite top league (yet) but could get there.

Silvery hay gold colour. Nose is saline butter, crushed oyster shell. Palate is rounded melted saline butter, lemon skins and succulent roasted lemon flesh. Followed by tons of minerals. Refreshing and mouthwatering. Good weight, length and a forever reverberance. Really impressive. Paired brilliantly with carpaccio of Hokkaido Scallops

Dinner party gift from a friend. Minimally decanted....which did it no favours. Yoiung in colour and warmly pleasing but basicaly closed on the nose. Palate is rich, ripe, sultry fruit, new oak in its good way.......overall, I could summarise it as young but very succulent. Fun to drink now with food but can only improve over the next few years.....although not, I suspect, in line with its current price point.

Gift from Mark and Tracey.....who certainly like thier wines 'meaty, beefy, big and bouncey'. Attractive garnet red semi-opaque colour. Nose is a ton of horse-poop from a stables, gamey, garrique, galangal, ginger...definitely lots of G's until you reach the English Black Pudding meaty note and the super-concentrated, boiled-down pastilles sugary fruit. Already, you can tell that this is not a wine that will easily be reduced to a few simple sentences of description. Palate is thick in the mouth, pure, very charred black fruit.......it made me wonder whether anyone has ever barbequed fresh blackberries. A ton of new American oak frames the whole, deeply resonant and thunderous package. There is a ton of horse-poop in there throughout but in a very good way. Not my nornal style of wine but this is a precocious beauty and you have to salute how well-made it is. Personally, I think this will please young but might then go horribly disjointed from adolescence and beyond. But, hell.....I may be wrong. Whatever, it is so much fun to drink now.

Dinner at Home (Our House, Hong Kong): Decanted for 3 hours before serving with the final cheese course of dinner at home (Epoisses, Comte etc.). Still an inpenetrably opaque black-red colour and a cork that liiks like it was inserted yesterday. But...wow....this wine has finally blossomed. Nose is lovely clean precise warm blackberry , graphite and ashphalt. Palate is gorgeously seductive, rounded and harmonious blackberry and blackcurrant, a gorgeous richness of fruit counterpointed by elegant medium acidity. The oak is there but has integrated really well whilst still showing some warm vanilla. Nice rounded finish of medium length and resonance. This has finally broken through from a long and truculent adolescence and I think it could blossom further. Absolutely superb QPR if you can find it for USD70 or so.

Dinner at Home (Our House, Hong Kong): Opened for 2 hours before serving. Rich honeysuckle gold colour. The nose is gorgeously light and fresh acacia honey honeysuckle and whisps of temple smoke....much lighter and more spohisticated than previous bottles from this case. Palate is similar freshness and elegant balance of honey and mouthwatering citrus before the bass organ comes in at the finish with a wonderful reverberence and length. It's a pity that there seems to be so much bottle variance even within the same case.....reviewing my prior tasting notes, I find it hard to believe that they describe the same wine. Hopefully, more ageing is bringing greater freshness.....but I suspect that it is something agricultural in the winemaking that is just allowing too much variance.

Dinner at Home (Our House, Hong Kong): Drank in Burgundy wine glasses after a brief opening. Lively mousse that quickly dies down to limpid, languid slow-rising streams of very tiny bubbles. Colour is very light straw-gold colour. Nose is immediate fresh, doughy brown bread straight out of the baker's oven, tons of yeast. Palate is extremely fresh and refreshing crisp green apple acidity and a nice honeysuckle and Epsom Salts then chalky end that, in turn, moves into a subdued but yet-to-be-released length and resonance on the finish. This is sophisticated, refreshing and elegant Champagne.....definitely the least evolved of any of the top 2002s that I have drank. I shall hold back the rest of my case for another year or so before checking its evolution. Impressive stuff. 92+

Long decant this time then vacuumed for 3 days.....second time Herald has given me this as a gift. Jeweled transparent but deep ruby colour. Nose of forward clove and cinnamon spice with a healthy dose of sous bois......definitely the deeper end of the piano scale and surprisingly balanced and accessible at such a young age (something you don't associate with Faiveley). Palate is warm, rounded, succulent plum fruit and almost christmas cake cinnamon spices with a heavy tannic finish but it doesn't spoil the party. There is some impressive resonance and reverberance on the finale too....although I suspect more than a glass at this stage of its evolution could give a nasty headache.....the only time the oak really shows itself is right at the back end, when it really kicks in. An interesting work in progress......I love that cinnamon element. 91+

Colour is totally inpenetrable black-red. Nose defies specificity....rather like when drinking a First Growth from a great vintage......just a fugue of sensations like Miles Davis playing a trumpet on the theme of 'purple'. The palate has an immediate acid-fruit balance followed by an incredible tsunami wave of total capitulation. No subtlety but amazing harmony......An Awesome Wave. Runny and I uncovered this in our 'The Next Grange' hunt several 6 or 7 years ago. Wow, wow..... I was blown away by this tonight. 96+

An incredibly rich and seductive purple-red colour....still very youthful. Nose is just WOW!.....perfect pencil lead and black fruit precision......I have to say precision again.....lots of high notes......wonderful. Palate is very accessible fresh acidic attack and a great balance balance of black/red fruit followed by a thunderous resonance inside the head which is totally captivating and lasts forever. Serious stuff and with tons of room for further improvement. The best showing of this wine since I bought it en primeur. There is no over-ripeness here despite the uncommonly hot vintage..........it has to be the wine of the vintage.

Gosh......this has a lovely plush nose of rose petals, fresh-bruised lavender and hot sultry summer garden nights....smoky, perfumed, sultry (yes, that word again). Palate is gorgeous acidic freshness and incredibly powdered tannins. Resonant and long inside the head on the finale and on the palate. Perfect.....absolutely at its full expression but should stay here for another few years. Was superb with the simple mushroom risotto we deliberately chose in advance to pair with it. Beautiful..... 93-94.

Nose is a gorgeous wave of pencil lead, black liquorice and high tones of black new leather boots....very Bordeaux First Growth. Palate is absolutely WOW! Totally seductive and takes you completely down Alice's rabbit hole. More precise descriptors seem superfluous. Unctuous, so rich, so total.....absolutely brilliant. Enormous length and thunderous resonance that just powers over you in rolling waves. Firm tannins....still decades ahead of it......but so so so good now. Gosh.

Dinner with Friends (Crown Wine Cellars, 18 Deep Water Bay Drive, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Decanted an hour before serving at cellar room temperature. Fresh-looking medium-gold colour that has darkened a shade since I last opened a bottle two years ago. This packed a beautifully harmonious and fully integrated similar nose and palate of weighty damp hay, sweet summer evening honeysuckle and light acacia honey all in a lemony citric acidic frame. The oak is there and adds a pleasant bass organ note but is now superbly integrated and not over-powerful. This is the best showing of this wine that I have experienced and it matched perfectly with a lightly seared scallops appetiser. My heart was somewhat stolen back by this wine after a period where I have been wooed by the ligher charms of Ch Montelena Chardonnay......this is a medium-weight Bienvenues Batard Montrachet compared to a young Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru.

I cannot improve on my previous descriptions that this is just a gorgeous, light-toned but serious Napa Chardonnay in a very Puligny Montrachet flinty and lemony style. It served its purpose perfectly. We drank it ahead of a Kistler Vine Hill Chardonnay 2006, which was lovely but more of a food wine.

Treated with maximum respect as I had bought this case on release and have kept from drinking any more of it since an underwhelming experience two years ago. Three hour decant and drank half the bottle over the following three hours. Still pristine cork.....like it had been bottled last year. Colour is red-black just lightening very slightly from completely opaque to marginally translucent. Nose is burnt rubber from a fast car acceleration,high-toned violet candies, coal tar....blind, you would think this is a closed, high-end Barolo. Palate is similar to the nose in its three elements except that each of them are even more closed. No length or resonance because it is shut as tight as a clam......or as tight as an unripe blackberry. Quite pure but just very unyeilding. Very dry and tannic on the back of the palate. Hard to see how this will ever unfurl but I shall exercise another two years' patience. Ultimately, I think theere is a very good wine hidden inside its unyeilding shell.... 5 years? No...with 6 hours after decanting this is unfolding into an absolutely beautiful wine that has suddenly catapulted from 86 points a couple of hours ago to 91+ points now and with many years ahead to evolve and improve. What a stunning and unusual turnaround. Love it!

Life has been kind to this wine since I last drank it and really enjoyed it 3 years ago. Lovely fresh and vibrant straw gold colour. Nose is deep, sweet slightly sweaty straw and lots of variations on sun-dried lemons. Palate is quite tannic but nicely structured to showcase the burnt lemon skin, taut oyster shell and lightly caramel mid-palate. Back end is super roasted charcoal grill lemon skins and a ton of lemon juicy fresh acidity.

Drank languidly over a lazy Easter Saturday. Totally consistent with previous notes....including from last weekend. This is just a gorgeous, light-toned but serious Napa Chardonnay in a very Puligny Montrachet flinty and lemony style. We drank it in the evening against a 2007 Ridge Monte Bello Chardonnay, which is equally impressive but more Mersault in style. This has 5 more years in it at least and I am deeply in love, which has not gone down well with my formr Napa Chardonnay paramours, the Kistler girls - Vine Hill and Durrell.

First of a case.....drank sparingly over 10 days and vacuumed in between.......I should have spaced the glasses over 10 months. Totally opaque black-red colour. Completely unyielding 'black slab' nose. Palate is a schoolboy experiment in drinking pen ink - but there is much more there brooding in the background. This isn't rustic but it is incredibly backward even by the late-developing standards of siblings such as Leoville Barton or Gruard Larose. Revisit in 5 years.
