2010 Castello della Sala (Antinori) Cervaro della Sala Umbria IGT

Chardonnay Blend, Chardonnay more

7/26/2015 - Goldstone wrote: 88 points

First bottle from two cases recently acquired. Quite a pronounced yellow gold colour. Nose is sweaty oak and warm lemon verbena leaves. Palate is good acidity and a ton of minerality, slightly burnt lemon skins (the oak having its effect) and a temple smoke element on the back end that carries the slightest trace of trending oxidisation. Rather oaky and alcoholic for my taste...... echoes of Pahlmeyer Chardonnay in style. Not for keeping, in my view.

Dinner at Tosca (Tosca Restaurant, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Hong Kong): Decanted for 10 hours before pouring with a return to the bottle in between home and restaurant. Seeped but completely intact cork. Gosh....the colour is a vivid and dense purple with highlights of velvet red......I can't help but think that it would appeal to Donata Versache. Nose is Barolo-esque black liquorice stick spice, black and red liquorice bootlaces candy, tar, sun-warmed asphalt, dried star anise in a curry. really mesmerising but still young and playing 'catch me if you can'. Palate is deep, rich, rounded, very heady and reverberant even before you swallow - star anise, black liquorice root and tons of fresh cardomon that really stands out. Ultra-smooth and unctuous mouthfeel with superb resonance and reverberance and endless length. Ultra-yummy and the most hedonistic of the wines tonight but a biit one-dimensional in comparison. We made a good decision to hold off on this until a course of 3 beautiful Italian cheeses as it repaid the extra time in the decanter. I wanted to like this wine more but I can't see it developing the multi-dimensional complexity for a Grange or a Hill of Grace as it ages over the next decade, although I'm sure it will improve.

Dinner at Tosca (Tosca Restaurant, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Hong Kong): Decanted for 2 hours then re-bottled for another 4 hours before taking to the restaurant. Perfect cork as though it had been bottled yesterday. Completely opaque and dense purple-red colour that looks 10 years younger than its age. Nose filled the room on pouring..... very perfumed, almost Merlot-like.....complex, deep and mesmerising. Palate has that perfect immediate top-tier Napa attack of gorgeous fresh acidity and purity of fruit but the tannins are still young and not very well integrated on the mid-palate; then BANG! ....a wonderful rolling, ascending, reverberating resonance on the finish that blows you away and resonates for a minute or more and leaves you simultaneously with a belly-filling richness of fruit and spice. Quite acidic and tannic even 8 hours after the initial decant - this is a young wine that is only just entering its proper drinking window even though it seduced me when I last drank it in 2010. Everybody's WOTN.....next time I will open the 1986 and keep the rest of these for 5 more years.

Dinner at Tosca (Tosca Restaurant, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Hong Kong): Decanted for 4.5 hours before taking to the restaurant. It is still a teeth-staining dense and thick red-purple colour. The nose just jumped out of the glass and filled the room........ dep, deep, rich essence of St. Julien with superb fruit concentration and purity....as if a Michelin chef had created the perfect blackcurrant pastille....lots of graphite, really linear in the perfectly machined black slab way. Palate has become more rounded since I last drank it. Very extracted but not in a bad way ( I generally don't like extracted wines), mouth-coating in texture and sensation, still lots of new oak and the tannin on the finish is quite austere with the same 'black slab' sensation as the nose. This has become a younger, more structured and more serious wine in the recent times I have drank it and I think that something extremely good will emerge over the next 5 years or so. A triumph for the vintage.

Splash poured at a Cantonese restaurant for a farewell dinner to friends leaving Hong Kong. No detailed notes but this was a gorgeous expression of Italian Cabernet Sauvignon and drank seductively wel. It retains a suberb Piedmont tannic backbone but with enough age to have softened it. This is a very lovely wine. Must revisit.

(Bottle no. 34478) I last drank this almost exactly a year ago and made a note then to drink it in a more contemplative setting next time....... which I didn't do last night as it was a farewell dinner to friends at a busy Cantonese restaurant. So no detailed notes, but this was an absolutely beautiful wine that has matured a little in the passing year and is now beautifully elegant.........this is relatively light and much more like a Hill of Grace in feminine elegance than the more full throttle depth of a good vintage of Grange. It is a lovely wine and I have to repeat my own advice from last year to drink it in more contemplative surroundings next time. Thanks, Mark!

1995 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm

McLaren Vale more

7/5/2015 - Goldstone Likes this wine: 89 points

Opened and consumed at cellar temperature with no decant......the last of three cases drank over the past 10 years and with a crumbled cork typical of all the recent bottles. Nose is high-toned red plum, red cherry and red liquorice bootlaces candy together with undertones of black coal and coal-tar soap (childhood memory) in the background. More earthy plum comes out with time in the glass. Palate is good acidity followed by autumnal plum fruit and cigarettes & cigars in an ashtray that are not quite unpleasant but I suspect will become so within another year or so. With extended time you get this rather interesting drying chalky plum liqueur taste that coats the mouth. Fully mature top-tier McLaren Vale Shiraz in its sundown period. An excellent examle if you were in a wine class of what a fully mature wine should taste like. Good heady and fleshy resonance and reverberance on the finish. A great drop that has given me super and consistent pleasure for the past 10+ years but now is time to bid adieu and move on to the 2002.

Deep gold hue. Nose of a Puligny Montrachet....plus apricots and sweaty jockstrap...almost ammonia but actually very pleasant in a high-toned way. Palate is a mirror of the nose.... super acidic cut and honeyed depth and richness. Deliciously semi-sweet and semi-dry on the finish. Heady long finale. Delicious and a great food wine with a Burgundian-style morels dish.

Translucent lightly dusky ruby colour. Nose is lovely burnt damp earth. Good red plum fruit. Palate is freshly acidic but with a lot of mature plum and autumn leaves tertiary elements. A bit over - alcoholic on the finish. Rustic rather than sophisticated. Most memorable was the very old-fashioned 'Cordier'-shaped bottle.

Thailand Weekend; 6/20/2015-6/21/2015 (Bangkok & Na Jomtien, Thailand): Quite deep gold for its age. Nose of ripe new world oaked chardonnay but with some elements of above-average sophistication.....hints of Mersault. Palate has good charcoal-roasted whole lemons acidity to balance the quite heavy melted butter that is the other distinctive element....although there is some minerality here too. The finish is marred by somewhat heavy alcohol. Overall, for a wine bought in Thailand it is not bad.....it has the Mersault-style muscularity to withstand the temperatures and generally poor storage.

Thailand Weekend; 6/20/2015-6/21/2015 (Bangkok & Na Jomtien, Thailand): A bottle brought from Greg's cellar in Hong Kong and drank over a Fathers Day lunch to accompany char-grilled Tiger Prawns and steamed Blue Crab form the local beach restaurant. I sometimes have difficulty to 'get' this wine but today was one of my best experiences - the really fresh, simple seafood really brought out an additional dimension in the wine. I am coming to conclude that this is definitely a food wine rather than a aperitif.

Thailand Weekend; 6/20/2015-6/21/2015 (Bangkok & Na Jomtien, Thailand): No decant but drank slowly over 2+ hours. Translucent ruby jeweled red. Nose is damp earth and raspberries, Indian spices. Palate is gloriously fresh acidity, spicy, bramble black fruit. A bit dilute compared to bigger vintages but gorgeous to drink now. The fruit is really lovely and succulent with some fresh ground nutmeg and peach stone. Quite tannic still without a decant, which gives it that peach stone element. Subtly resonant. 90+

Thailand Weekend; 6/20/2015-6/21/2015 (Bangkok & Na Jomtien, Thailand): Transparent ruby colour. Nose is very pleasant hints of sheeps cheese and cow barns.....quite Burgundian, ripe raspberry fruit, hints of cherry boiled sweets.....but then it turns a bit sweet and loses complexity. Palate is a big disappointment after the initial nose - very thin, dilute cherry cola. A touch of length. Bought and drank in Thailand, so it could well be a poor bottle.

Thailand Weekend; 6/20/2015-6/21/2015 (Bangkok & Na Jomtien, Thailand): Decanted for 2 hours. Semi-transparent vivid purple-red colour....vivid in a bad way. Nose is tannic, tarry, very alcoholic, bitter black chocolate, fumey...... not appealing. Palate is very bitter unripe black cherry, green Chinese bitter gourd vegetable, coca cola, throat-burning high alcohol, very dry tannic woody finish. No length. Altogether rather unpleasant fruit and alcohol bomb. A longer decant offererd few redeeming features.

Drank over a business dinner a deux.....so no detailed notes. Transparent but youthful in colour and appearance. Nice nose of woodland strawberries and hints of smoke. Some initial tartness and tannin on the palate blew off to reveal some very nice fruit and a touch of sous bois. Light, feminine and lacking the concentration of length one might expect of a Grand Cru. I am in the camp that says this needs at least another 5 years to show its full potential. An ex-Chateau mixed case bought at a charity auction - I thought it was a 6-bottle case but it turned out to be 12, so double-happiness!

Dusky amber colour with a ton of sediment. Nose is classic Ch. Musar high toned nail varnish remover and black and red sour cherry then this deep obelisk blackness that takes you down Alice's rabbit hole rather like a Palacios Priorat does. Palate is super fresh acidity on entry then signature sour cherry but on steroids. Gorgeous farmyardy mid-palate that segues into a light high piano note played in a cathedral and which never ends. An absolutely perfect bottle that would have been even better with my normal 8-hour decant for old Musar.

6/4/2015 - Goldstone Likes this wine: NR

Old Bordeaux Dinner (Hong Kong Country Club, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Not decanted (which was a pity) but drank slowly over Partagas Lusitania cigars (which was a delight). Semi-translucent rich deep dark ox-blood colour. Nose is attractively smooth and very masculine but quite reticent and seemingly young. The palate masks the alcohol well but this vintage is all about muscularity and structure and is still a work in progress......I drank mine from a Bordeaux glass, which helped a lot. It was a bit too late in the night to score this.

Old Bordeaux Dinner (Hong Kong Country Club, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): High shoulder fill. Totally transparent but still a lovely bright light ruby colout. Nose is captivating - sweet, light, fragrant rose and raspberry. Palate is wow......wonderful structure, graceful tannins, rich but light in body yet somehow with real power. The finish is mouth coating and with a super resonance and revererance that is impressively long. Almost as good on the night as the 1973 Cheval Blanc. Brilliant.

It still has very good structured tannins. Some length.

6/4/2015 - Goldstone wrote: 88 points

Old Bordeaux Dinner (Hong Kong Country Club, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): High shoulder fill. Bright transparent dark ruby jewel colour. Nose is much richer and plusher than the 1976 Pichon Baron drank alongside it. Some musk in a pleasant way. Palate is all smoothed out and with plummy tertiary character and started to seem flattened out and well past its prime but then some enjoyable belly-filling fruit emerged - like a Lynch Bages - and it became more secondary. Not as much power or length as you might expect.....actually, a rather tired but interesting bottle.

Old Bordeaux Dinner (Hong Kong Country Club, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Low neck fill. Totally transparent but with a very harmonious and consistent light ruby colour.....it looks jeweled and fresh still. Nose is lovely - seductive, rich, dried herbs still hanging on the bush on a sun-baked dry earth hillside with a few drops of misty rain. I can't stop sniffing this. Palate is light but gorgeously poised, good acidity balanced perfectly by light red fruits of raspberry and redcurrant. Gosh, I'm having a silence attack. Lightly, femininely resonant and reverberant. Absolutely brilliant....wow....wow...clearly a perfect bottle.
