2021 Mike Press Shiraz
Adelaide Hills

This finds its groove, and I have to remember that this can be bought for under $15 AUD.
Have not had in many years, but this bottling is not how I remember this wine.
This is very high alcohol for a wine of this depth.
If you can get over the heat, it gets ths job done.
Preferred the Cabernet of the same vintage by a clear margin.
Will buy a box of the Cabernet, but will skip this vintage of Shiraz.

2023 Cirillo Grenache The Vincent
Barossa Valley

|
Too young, and slow to open, but this is fine and delicious. Lean, structured Grenache with white, almost green pepper nose. Only just ripe red fruit. Medium bodied. Gorgeous perfume on the nose and through the aftertaste. Takes some time to open, have left most of the bottle for us to enjoy another night. It will fill out with a day or two of air. Serious wine here for $25ish AUD. Very good, and would not be surprised if up to excellent range with a day or two open. A great example of Barossa Grenache. The first I've tried from v23.

2017 L'enclos du Tetre Riesling
Frankland River

Tasted on day four, it is still fresh and singing.
A much more citrus driven rendition, and leaner, than the 18 which was much greener and rich from memory.
Herbaceous notes steers blind tasting towards Semillon for a moment, but then the talc and stones start to shine pulling you back in to Riesling territory.
A shame this is no longer made. Length for days, intense flavour, and will last a very long time in a cellar.
It's not moved much in its first 7 years.
To get this quality, in this style, in German GG dry wines you'd be paying many multiples.
Outstanding. Look again in 5 years, minimum. Likely to last another 15. Thankfully under screwcap.

Very good to excellent.
Paired with baked mulloway fish and chips, and a dear friend who loves to cook.
Good cork (cork travel less than 3mm). Took 60 mins to fill out and find balance in a decanter.
Drink now, the bright fruit is still there and just the right measure of aged character.
No formal notes, too enjoyable.
A bargain at approx $50 aud on clearance. Glad to have another bottle which I'll open and share in the next Australian winter.

2013 Rockford Rod & Spur
Barossa Valley
Cabernet-Shiraz Blend, Red Blend more
|
Gift from dear friends, enjoyed during son's 10th birthday celebrations.
Enjoyed by people who do not usually drink red wine.
Tannins fully resolved, medium weight, and acid and alcohol in perfect balance in this medium body Barossa.
It has softened, but tertiary character only a feature.
Great drinking now, but will develop more.
Drink now to 3 years.
Very good.

2015 Château La Tour de Mons
Margaux
Red Bordeaux Blend more
|
This is very good on a pop and pour half bottle.
Med red colour, coming in slightly from the rim.
Ribeena blackcurrant cordial nose, some dusty leather and wooden wine box, some oily woody herbs (rosemary?), Menthol, and very pretty and lifted purple flowers (violets- i got what I came for at this stage).
On entry it is clean and med bodied. Bright and vibrant red and black fruits come first and give a modern feel.
Follows through the mid palate to charry and meaty notes, with a touch of char and gravel. It's thinner and leaner than the nose suggests. It's very aromatic.
Graphite and oak through the finish, then menthol and red and black fruit.
Supple, meaty tannins grip. The aftertaste a sweep of all that pretty floral that came through the nose with a slight green capsicum and menthol note giving a slightly bitter and tacking grip.
This is very typically Margaux, purple flowers, medium bodied elegance, and it has good length.
My only complaint is that it lacks a touch of density. Would have loved to have seen this with a touch more ripeness and body.
Modern, elegant, pretty and typical of appelation.
This is very good now, a year or two more might benefit to fill out the middle and hide the slight bitterness of tannin still there.
It's approachable now, if I had more I'd look again in 2 years.
Opened in the morning for dinner.

2020 Dopff au Moulin Gewurztraminer Brand
Alsace Grand Cru

|
It's pretty big and viscous, but true to type if not a tad simple for this variety that is usually so complex! Alcohol is in check, but sweetness makes it very full. Stays on the right side of flabby, but only just. Musk, lychee and rose nose. Slightly bitter finish and alcohol burr. Needs food, full bodied. It's an average example, but easy to pick grape and region. Drink now, don't wait.

2023 William Downie Cathedral
Upper Goulburn
Pinot Noir more
|
Perfectly made, supple and unadulterated new world pinot noir.
Medium weight, perfect balance, vibrant and very easy to drink.
It finds increased grip open for an hour, but it will not last that long.
Packaging is beautiful, as with all the Downie wines.
Low on oak and stems, this is adult cordial. Dangerous stuff!
Very good to excellent quality. All things considered it's outstanding value.
An unexpected gift from dear friends.

Funky nose blows off quickly, rustic but not dirty like some of the 'lo-fi' wines I've been exploring of late.
Throws a heavy sediment, be sure to decant or avoid the last glass in the bottle.
Pleasant, easy, true to style. Would buy again.

2021 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz
more
|
This cost me all of 12 bucks (Aussie).
Far out.
I needed a wine to restore my faith in Shiraz after opening a dirty natural Shiraz wine monstrosity.
This over delivers in spades.
Sure, it's commercial wine.
But it is clean.
But it tastes of shiraz, from Coonawarra, and it has length far beyond its price point.
Curious to know how much of this is bought on deal Vs rrp.
This is my go to when I can't find any Shiraz from the Grampians.
It's not far from there, and it has so much in common.
Savoury, medium bodied Shiraz with a sour cherry and pepper twang.
I like this, a confusing shame it's currently positioned as a supermarket wine.
This is very good, and exceptional value. When on deal it's a steal.
Drink now to 10 years. It is a pup and if previous vintages are anything to go by it does not tire easily.
Buy two of these instead of one natural wine monstrosity.
Is that a little floral violet action coming through the aftertaste.
Hmm. This is very good.

Drank at room temperature.
Disappointing, borderline faulty.
Asked my wife what it smells like, she said the farm animals at the Royal Adelaide Show she's just returned from.
Color is the best part, vibrant and clear red purple. As too is the label. Good art.
Nose smells of barnyard and leather.
On entry acid is sharp, brings orange juice and cherry sherbet. It tastes ok through the middle. You can feel the 11.9 percent, it enters light bodied.
Finish of leather and horse contrasting with tart cherry candy and OJ. Length improves as it gets air, but unfortunately so does the funk.
Balsamic notes through the finish suggest it's on its way to vinegar. Short length, low tannins.
Maybe it's just this bottle. Natural wine should be correct. This finds freshness in the middle, but it's far from clean.
Not for me. Tastes like some of the better homemade wines I've had.
No sulfur warning on label. Composite and branded cork. Looks to retail for 25-30 aud.
Day two update
This is much better cold, it hides the funk.
Drink cold, very cold
Sweet and sour, like a Toffee Apple lollie bar. Or a Redskin.

Very easy to drink. Would go well on a casual dining wine list. McLaren Vale does Sangiovese so well, just don't expect dry, acidic or light Chianti style. This is ripe, round, and easy going. Like. Extra points for the play on words, cool packaging, and screwcap. A great wine to engage people new to wine.

Excellent to outstanding.
But far too young.
Sublime balance. Medium bodied. Some polish and gloss from winemaking but it's length and class show through.
Give a very long decant at this point.
19 and 21 the delicate vintages from these parts, the 20s I've had seem pretty broad and ripe.
Strawberries and cream, then some tannin and a spread of citrus and savoury.
Gorgeous in a Riedel stemless nebbiolo.
Hold, come back in 5.

Past its peak, bit still some pleasure to be had.
Leather, tobacco and balsamic notes on the nose.
Meets rustic and ashen tannin, red fruit.
Finish is short but clean.
Not offensive, at $25 AUD it's overpriced.

Kindly shared by Duck.
This is exceptional, bordering on outstanding.
The power and length on show here make it a wine for grownups.
Green apple skins, body and texture from what seems to be barrel work, intense lime and mandarin.
Then a wall of green apple skins, almost Semillon like grassiness, and a huge volume of flavour that sets you back on your heels.
The concentration, balance and length here is standout.
Not one for apero, this needs food.
Was saddened to learn that this wine is no longer being made.
Interested to know where the fruit is now being used.
Outstanding, will go a long time. Its still fresh at age 5.

Deep, dark. ashen and brooding.
Pretty aromatics have sunk deep in to the wine, this is a bit of a tannic monster right now.
Like is for quality, rather than drinking pleasure.
Its in a bit of a hard going phase right now, but it will live a very long time.
Served this blind, and from memory of the last bottle, this really surprised.
This is excellent, but its currently not open for busines with a wall of charry tannin. So much so that wagyu did not tame it.
Impressive more than enjoyable at this point, almost age ten.
Wait another 3-5 and check back in in the hope that it will drop some tannin and find the elegance this vineyard is known for.
Far out, 2014s are living up to the then hype.
Hold.

Bretty, bilgy, and tabac nose.

The warmer 20 vintage on show here in that is a very pretty but full bodied and broad nebbiolo wine.
Great to see under screw, this drinks pretty easily pop and pour. Was spared the Brett noticed by chatters, this bottle clean (almost to it's detriment, almost clinical).
Looking forward to trying with a day open, they often gain grip and focus which this bottle could benefit from.
It's good to very good on day one.
Day two Lithe, glossy and pure entry with dark fruits, sweet spice and citrus skins coming in to bat.
Back half and finish is now much more focussed on sweetly spiced and chewy tannins.
Some slightly funky and agricultural character finds a voice (refer chatters note) but on the spectrum of Italian wine it's a clean whistle.
Amazing how nebbiolo finds its feet with air.
In to very good territory for me.
On the spectrum of 'baby Barolo' to 'joven' it's left of middle. Its not quite as tannic as some trying to be or declassifying true Barolo, but it's not the grown up raspberry cordial that some famous names put in to Langhe (thinking Mascarello).
Maker/labelling advice around 'to drink now' or 'for the cellar/baby Barolo' is knowledge more important to this varietal than almost any other.

Polished, clean and rich medium bodied sangiovese.

Would buy again.

A little time has passed since my last look at this.
Its become a little more meaty, with an increased focus on woody, oily herbs like rosemary.
Gee it's good.
A pity that people usually come to this grape late.
Its a red wine for grownups.
first throws of bricking robe.
Mentol and black jellybean nose bursts from the glass
The 19 is where it is at for me. Fresh, herbal, length for days.
Its perfectly balanced full body.
With a delightful meaty herbal grip.
Dark fruit and Mentol come in creamy and then rough waves.
This wine is a journey. And one that has cut right through a sinus infection.
This is outstanding wine.
Thank you duck for sharing another bottle.

A rare screwcap. a note on day two.
Heading to tawny, Merky and browning.
Full body. Cherry, cinnamon, leather, earth and leaves. A touch of balsamic nose.
Tannins grab, lifted perky cherry skins, orange peel, and ash and gravel.
Finishes a lot fresher than entry, orange peel and tart cherry skins with a nice touch of bitter green peppercorns and menthol through the aftertaste.
Quite a meaty and savoury chew of tannin.
Its ready, if not a little past peak.
Drink now. It's a good example. My dear friend said that this is one of the lesser bottles he's opened of this wine.
Thanks Treas.
