Robert Houde Wines Portfolio feat. Marc De Grazia selections (Ritz-Carlton, Chicago IL): nose: nice nose of dark red fruits, licorice, and dark red cherries. More ripe and somewhat forward, but not too much

taste: very good medium body and nice tones of herbs, licorice, and dark red cherries. Good medium acidity gives this a nice spine

overall: a real nice chianti. Well balanced and while its fairly red fruited, its not too forward and still tastes and smells like chianti, which the 05 didn't really do

Robert Houde Wines Portfolio feat. Marc De Grazia selections (Ritz-Carlton, Chicago IL): nose: big and a bit riper nose with tones of red cherries, roasted herbs, red currants and some bits of red florals.Showing off the vintage as there is a power behind this, but it also lacks some depth as well

taste: big and chewy tannins with medium/high acidity show off the youth of the wine with rich tones of spices, roasted herbs, dark red cherries, and a touch of red florals. Very young as the tannins and acidity are hiding the tones a bit right now

overall: this could be really good with a bit of time. Has a real richness and power behind it that needs a bit to be tamed. Big acidity and tannins back this up right now and make it a bit tough

Robert Houde Wines Portfolio feat. Marc De Grazia selections (Ritz-Carlton, Chicago IL): nose: rich and powerful nose of mint, dark red cherries, roasted herbs, some oak tones, and bits of red currants. Definitely has a riper fruit to it from the vintage, but it isn't too overpowering. Has a balance to it along with its larger frame, but doesn't have the depth to go with it

taste: good firm tannins with rich tones of berries, dark red cherries, red currants, and roasted herbs. The oak doesn't show as much on the palate as on the nose and there is good medium+ acidity to go with this

overall: it could probably use another 2-3 years. This won't ever be a bashful barolo and doesn't have the depth that some of the other vintages around it have. This could be an interesting barolo with a bit more time on it

Robert Houde Wines Portfolio feat. Marc De Grazia selections (Ritz-Carlton, Chicago IL): nose: more tightly wound then previously, but still showing off great depth and richness with beautiful tones of dark red cherries, red florals, mints, herbs and a bit of spices

taste: big tannins with high acidity that show off the youth of the wine. Deep and plush tones of dark red cherries, mints, spices and some bits of red fruits. Very balanced with some power behind it, but it isn't overdone

overall: a great young wine. Its closed up a slight bit since I had it last year. It still shows a lot of potential that will need some time to really show. The aromas and flavors have real good depth and should be a lot of fun when they mature some more

something seemed slightly off on this. There was a slight bit of cork taint, but it was hard to tell whether it was full on corked, or just old beaucastel funk. I'm gonna lean towards slightly corked. There were still pretty good tones of leather, black fruits, animale and some bleu cheese. This carries through on the palate with good tannins and some black cherries as well. The funk rears its head, and shows off some real brett as well. While I don't really expect truly clean bottles of older beaucastel, this just seemed a bit off

nose: dark and intriguing nose of ripe black cherries, smoke, bacon fat, raspberry compote, and black pepper tones. Good depth with a ripeness to the tones showing off the vintage, but ripe in terms of northern rhones

taste: medium/full bodied feel with good supporting tannins and tones of black fruits, black cherries, bacon fat, smoke, pepper and some bits of dark red fruits as well. Well balanced, this is showing well, but youthful at the same time

overall: This has really smoothed out and softened up since I last had it. Shows the vintage, but it isn't overdone at all, its just on the riper side of things. Good tannins show off the youth of the wine as well as the more primary nature of it right now. This has been decanted for about 90 minutes before drinking

taste: very good medium body with tannins still showing themselves and medium+ acidity. Balanced with darker tones of earth, spice, red cherries and some red currants

overall: a real quality village wine. Good depth and fresh acidity give this a real nice base. This wine screams for some food, but is very enjoyable on its own. This received about an hour or so of bottle air before pouring

nose: real good and dark nose that is very aromatic with tones of dark red cherries, bitter chocolate, tobacco, and bits of dark red fruits with a touch of black currants. Real good depth and rather classy

taste: Full bodied with good tannins still showing themselves along with rich and tasty tones of plums, graphite, tobacco, dark red cherries, and some dark chocolate. Smooth and showing off some youthful exuberance on the tones, but they are dialed back a bit as well

overall: This received about 4 hours of decanting. Well balanced with a real classy and refined sense to it while also coming off as starting to fully drink. Real good aromatics and flavors, this also had a bit of browning going on in the glass and had a lighter red color to it as well

1997 Brunellos (Vinci, Chicago): nose: This was holding back a bit at first, but then started to unwind into succulent and savory tones of violets, dried roses, cigarette ash, lots of mixed berries as well as italian spice tones and bits of star anise. Very complex and demanding of your attention

taste: lovely and regal medium feel with beautiful tones of red cherries, cigarette ash, anise, mixed berries, perfumes, and violets. Very well balanced and refined with noticeable medium/high acidity and good tannins still showing themselves

overall: This received about 6 hours of bottle air, and it could've used a lot more. This is still fairly young and would need a good decant and a small group to really get into this. This is a real beauty that needs coaxing to reveal itself, but its worth getting there

taste: Smooth and gorgeous medium feel with round and silky tones of purple florals, earthen tones, dark red fruits, red cherries, and roasted herbs. Excellent medium+ acidity and good tannins still support this well

overall: This is drinking right now, but needs a smaller crowd on it. It could also use a bit of a decant and should last a good while. A real elegant and gorgeous brunello that is a real delight to drink and showing a more grounded style

taste: Polished and smooth medium/full feel with medium+ acidity and good tannins still holding. Balanced and deep tones of herbs, tobacco, dark red cherries, and all sorts of various purple florals blend well together

overall: This definitely stuck out in the lineup as it was more modern then the rest of the wines. It offered a great counter point to the other wines. Great depth on the wine, it still has a good while to go but is certainly drinkable right now and showing great

taste: beautiful and silky medium feel with medium+ acidity and good tannins with elegant tones of red berries, violets, red cherries, licorice, and loads of roasted herbs. The feel is delicate without being too soft

overall: This also took a bit to get going, but when it did it really bloomed and revealed itself as a gorgeous brunello. This had received a good amount of bottle air the night before. This was a real beauty that was seeming to just get going

1997 Brunellos (Vinci, Chicago): nose: slow to reveal itself, it took a bit to unwind and when it did well balanced and enveloping notes of dark red cherries, plums, bits of spices, roasted herbs and a touch of black tea. Excellent depth that gains more in the glass

taste: smooth and polished medium feel with excellent medium+ acidity and lovely tones of red fruits, dark berries, florals, and a good bit of roasted herbs. Good tannins still support the wine well and there is a real elegance to the wine

overall: This is a wine that you sit with and let it tell you a story. Having seven people on this didn't allow this to really show its best. This had seen about 6 hours of bottle air the day before and then recorked. It still took a bit of coaxing in the glass to really get it to start to open. This could probably use something like a 2 hour decant and a small group to let it really shine.

Robert Houde Wines Portfolio feat. Marc De Grazia selections (Ritz-Carlton, Chicago IL): nose: robust and rich nose of red fruits, dark red cherries, dark berries, and a good amount of roasted herbs. Good depth, and while it has an intensity to it from the vintage, it isn't over baked

taste: big and robust tannins with medium/high acidity and rich tones of dark red cherries, dark berries, roasted herbs, spice tones and tones of oak show as well. Very good depth and the tannins are a bit oppresive

overall: if the tannins can pull back, this could be a great barolo. It has an intensity of the fruit that should be able to hold up for some long aging. The tannins are a bit hard, so they probably will never really shed. This has some very good potential on it and could be very interesting in time

taste: fuller bodied on the palate with high acidity and tannins as well as dense tones of red currants, herbs, oak, and tones of red fruits

overall: rich and showing off a good amount of oak. Not sure how that will integrate, but there is good power behind this barolo. Does need time to pull back the acidity and tannins a bit, hopefully the oak will integrate and some more depth and complexity is added

taste: noticeable medium/high acidity and big chewy tannins give the back drop with plush tones of spices, red berries, red fruits, strawberries, roasted herbs and some bits of red cherries

taste: medium/high acidity with chewy tannins and plush tones of red fruits, roses, red cherries, and roasted herbs with some oak on the back end. Well balanced with very good depth

overall: Hopefully the oak will integrate. There is good balance to this with really good aromatics, but the oak pokes through enough to distract. Needs some time to pull back and put a bit more weight on, but this could be a really good wine with some time
