5/28/2020 - HKdrinker Likes this wine: 92 pointsBought in China 5+ years ago - the most expensive wine in the duty free shop at ~Yuan500 if I recall correctly. Given its age and lack of any meaningful provenance, expectations were modest. However, the wine surprised on the upside. Elegant nose, soft tannins with plenty of fruit still intact. Good balance and nice, long finish. Very pleasing wine to drink. Only held back by the complexity that marks a truly distinguished wine yet so much more refined than a VDT. Given this wine was produced in China in 1991 it's truly astonishing. I only wish I had bought a case! The winemaker should be proud of his/her achievements. |

If the wine is not double decanted then the wine shuts down and loses its expression. There is an excellent article on jancisrobinson.com titled "How and why to decant" written by Ferran Centelles which explains the science behind the how and why but suffice it to say that it's about the sediment consuming and reacting with dissolved oxygen in the wine. I note some disappointment amongst writers and this might be a possible explanation. At its best, this is a beautiful, powerful but well balanced wine. |

Restrained nose but on the tongue it was well balanced and smooth with long lasting layers of delicate fruit rolling off the tongue. Surpried that it receives a lowly 88 points from BH- I have marked it 5 points higher. |

Likewise the taste is equally powerful and true to the nose with long cassis and vanilla extract flavours that linger on the tongue. Seems to be in its prime just now. Great stuff if you like full bodied powerful wines! |
