Lovely pencil lead nose, a hint of heather, of spice. Palate is in great balance, medium fine tannins, middle weight and lovely structure. This is just a little better than it should be. Very welcome after a tough day and a rainy commute.

Saturday night - burgers and Starship Troopers: Interesting contrast to the 14 Le Soula which preceded it. Clean as a whistle, just a hint of grip and more of the ribena-adjacent fruit I'd perceived last time. This is a solid wine and amazing QPR but doesn't have quite the addictive qualities of the preceding vintage.

Of the two wines I much preferred this.

Saturday night - burgers and Starship Troopers: A very welcome 12.5% abv. Some funk on the nose - never quite blows off, not quite meaty but brett or brett like. Slightly confected fruit, parma violets? Gentle tannins, this is more than the sum of its parts, but not a *lot* more.

"Running" Club Oregon vs the World - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (Al fresco in leafy West London): Well. The age maybe makes it an unfair comparison but clearly the top of the reds. Real depth there, lovely cherry / bramble on the nose. The palate has some structure to it, real savoury character and just a hint of cherry stone on the finish. My wotn and the table's #2. Interestingly the table was evenly divided between people who preferred this and those who preferred the Hundred Suns.

"Running" Club Oregon vs the World - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (Al fresco in leafy West London): Lovely - really engaging, delicate brambly nose. Hints of savoury strawberry on the palate, just ever so slight jamminess but with a kind of herbaceous character that balances it well. My best experience with this wine I think. My #5 wotn and the table's #7.

"Running" Club Oregon vs the World - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (Al fresco in leafy West London): First sip was really engaging but - perhaps because i so rarely drink New World pinots, it's charms quickly faded for me. Some raspberry fruit there, a bit of jamminess, the oak bite is apparent, not clumsy in any way but the kind of thing that you have to be there for, and I wasn't there for it. Interestingly this was the most divisive wine at the table, being one person's clear favourite and others least liked.

"Running" Club Oregon vs the World - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (Al fresco in leafy West London): This is a banker and we put it in the line up as a calibration. More substance here, that lemonade ice lolly stick thing again, a hint of gooseberry bitterness at the back of the palate that maybe seems a little clumsy by comparison to the MLs, but this is a substantial wine that makes no apologies, but still manages to dance somewhat gracefully on its 14% abv feet. Mine and the table's #3 wotn.

"Running" Club Oregon vs the World - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (Al fresco in leafy West London): Ah now, this is more like it. Again, a pale colour. On the nose, grass clippings, a hint of lemon meringue perhaps. On the palate, lovely and balanced, real line and zip with a bit more generosity than previous bottles - the oak is evident but ever so well done. The table's wine of the night and my #2.

"Running" Club Oregon vs the World - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (Al fresco in leafy West London): This is lovely - perhaps a slightly muted cousin to the 16 tasted alongside. Real line and zip to it, there's a bit of breadth on the palate but it's still somewhat tightly coiled, as if it's not fully ready to share its pleasures. My 4th wotn and the table's 8th.

"Running" Club Oregon vs the World - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (Al fresco in leafy West London): But a pup! Again, a little more substance than the first in the flight, a little more heft here perhaps. That pleasing delicacy but again, not quite enough substance to back it up. The experience of the following flights suggests that, at least in part, these just need time. As a slight aside - I wonder if one thing the Oregonians have managed to replicate is the dumb phases of burgundy?

"Running" Club Oregon vs the World - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (Al fresco in leafy West London): Pale colour. A bit more intensity on the nose, a very gentle vanilla not perhaps? And some lemon, almost candied lemon, lovely linearity and purity.

"Running" Club Oregon vs the World - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (Al fresco in leafy West London): Pale colour. Subtle nose, you need to really sniff, then a hint of the kind of not quite cut grass smell i associate with chardonnay. Let's be honest - it smells of chardonnay. Light on the palate, pleasing acidity and poise, but not much substance there.

2010 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

4/8/2024 - lozatron Likes this wine: NR

On opening, lovely structure, velvety texture on the mouth, the fruit is contending well with the oak. A thrilling and balanced wine - only the slight baked character on the nose stops this from being a magnificent wine.
With time, air, and medium cooked Marriott burger the nose starts to pull itself together, some red fruits, a hint of blueberry. Weirdly as the nose cleans up, the palate becomes more as you’d expect - American oak caramel coming back to the fore. Still a pup but this will be magnificent in time.

Tight, tight, tight as a tiger. Some lovely floral notes, violet perhaps. A lot of concentration here - some marzipan, cherry stone, and a lot of fruit. I suspect that this would open up with a few hours in the glass. Not terribly complex but some good fruit there and I think a more than decent example of its kind.

A glass generously offered from a bottle which had been opened the night before. Took a moment for my palate to recalibrate to the style - American oak, unsweet vanilla and maybe a hint of reduction? Once I was there, I was there, lovely stuff, this is going now but I think in ten years will be in an even better place.

After a 2019 of the same wine had crossed the line from feral to fecal, wanted to see what we had going on here. Colour - purple, just starting to mellow. On the nose, a hint of spice, some red fruits perhaps, clean as a whistle. On the palate - lovely structure - no greenness really, a hint of herbaceousness perhaps? Perfectly complete in the mouth - just lovely lovely stuff. Drinking well now but I think it has some time ahead of it.

Kentish Feast (Petts Wood): I struggle with notes for sweet wines but here goes...gold colour (in real life not quite as deep as the pic) lovely richness and mouthfeel. A hint of apple pie with raisins in. Great length. Went very well with blood orange tart.

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/7/2024 - lozatron Likes this wine: NR

Kentish Feast (Petts Wood): Opened at the last minute when it became apparent that more red would go well with the remaining food. Again, clean as a whistle, a hint of camp fire, mushroom, lovely fruit gently carrying on underneath it all. Foolishly finished all the preceding bottle before trying this as would have been great to contrast - my sense is that this was perhaps a little less focused but it's also possible that by that stage it is I who was a little less focused.

1985 Château Clerc Milon

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/7/2024 - lozatron Likes this wine: NR

Kentish Feast (Petts Wood): Served from magnum. Mid-shoulder level and cork totally soaked through. Colour - garnet with a little bricking, this is not showing its age. Initial taste test - this is solid, well put together. Served after an hour or so - still holding itself together. Definitely some "old wine" character - some bonfire, but still focused and together, there's tobacco and cedar and tapenade. Reading other notes - I think we were lucky with this one, and doubtless being in magnum helped, but this is lovely stuff.

Kentish Feast (Petts Wood): Colour, pale straw. On the nose - a little muted, initially some struck match, straw and a whiff on honey. On the palate - at first definitely a whiff of reduction, which blows off somewhat but never completely. There's density - a lovely core of acidity, a little bit floral, a little bit mineral but a big mouthfeel. Kept coming back to this - lovely stuff.

Loire & Friends Chenin Dinner (Table du Marché): A very generous treat left by a local resident who wasn't able to join for dinner. This is super - my handwritten notes say "tension between minerality and fruit" - I can't remember if that was my idea or someone else's but it's spot on - great balance here. This is in a great spot - hard to know if the younger wine would follow the same path - I *think* it would, and got a few to test out the hypothesis.

Loire & Friends Chenin Dinner (Table du Marché): Ah now - this is more like it. There's weight there, density - someone said "extract" and yes, on hearing it I couldn't agree more. In terms of the flavours themselves - by this stage it is hard to differentiate between expressions of citrusy acidity, but theres a lovely minerality to this and all is in balance. Yum.
