1988 Cavallotto Langhe NebbioloLanghe DOC more |
5/8/2024 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 95 pointsGrown in the Bricco Boschis small 25 hectare vineyard not too far from the castle in the heart of Barolo. Bought directly from the castle long ago. Now this is nice. At almost 40 years of age, still exceptionally drinkable and fresh. A plethora of tertiary aging products. You can tell that it's old also based on the increased acidicity. All the tannis have turned into more complex goodies. Color remains surprisingly fresh. I am not a fan of young, closed nebbiolos, but this one shines bright still in 2024. Good cellaring, first in the castle basement and later by me. EDIT: after four hours of aeration, the lightworks began. Just WOW. A unique peppery bouquet, so intriguing. Note to self, increase the score and patience boy! |

2012 K Vintners The CreatorWalla Walla Valley Cabernet-Shiraz Blend, Red Blend more |
5/7/2024 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 92 pointsQuite nicely done. Very smooth, supple and well rounded. Almost too much so. The cab and the shiraz seem to take the edge out of each other leaving a crowd pleasing blend. But one word for this could be forgettable and uneventful. Still good, just not memorable. |

2021 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Volte Toscana IGTSuperTuscan Blend more |
5/3/2024 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 91 pointsFresh. Playful and fruity, yet with some acidicity and tannins. Very well done and astounding value. There's a bit of sangiovese in this one, and that tomato tartness almost works. This could be even better if that "pizza wine grape" was removed from the mix. |

2017 K Vintners Syrah The Deal Sundance VineyardWahluke Slope more |
4/7/2024 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 90 pointsDarker and zippier than almost all other K Vintners syrahs, even earlier vintages of the Deal. Pepper and black currant, not my thing. Maybe it is the acidicity, but I think there's something more to it. Not my favorite, but well done. Probably my least favorite K Vintners syrah ever and I have tried dozens and then dozens. Come think if it, this is almost like the raisin wine Amarone. Not a compliment. |

2015 Tenuta Iuzzolini Paternum Calabria IGTMagliocco more |
4/5/2024 - Kustjagr wrote: 89 pointsMade from the rare Magliocco Canino grapes. Maxed out alcohol at 15,5%. Boysenberry, striking jumpy acidicity. While a fun one, not really worth the price. Better than a sangiovese, but somewhat similar. |

2018 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
3/22/2024 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 88 pointsWay too young. Red tomato flavors dominate = sangiovesish. Probably 5 years from starting to brown into a real brunello, I hope. At this age, you might drink most randon sangioveses without being able to tell much difference. |

2016 Bosio Barbaresco Boschi dei SignoriNebbiolo more |
3/15/2024 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 92 pointsPleasant surprise. Very legit and grippy subtle sawdust tannins. Recognizable as a Nebbiolo unlike the pretentious young Barolo we had earlier. Just what you should expect, lovely. |

2019 Tenuta Cucco Barolo Serralunga d'AlbaNebbiolo more |
3/15/2024 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 90 pointsOne of those things, where WS rated this at 95, but it must be on the potential, primarily. I mean I can tell it's well done and great for its baby age. But if you asked me what it was in a blind tasting, I would never guess a Barolo from Serralunga D'Alba. Or any Barolo. Mostly potential for now. |

2018 Bodegas AAlto Ribera del Duero AAltoTempranillo more |
3/1/2024 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 93 pointsNice. Sawdust tannins, pencil cut oak. Well done and integrated. Supple. Just the right acidicity. Very, very supple. Either too young, as is likely, or not quite has characterful as other vintages I have had. |

2021 Bodegas Habla Habla del SilencioVino de la Tierra Extremadura Syrah Blend, Syrah more |
12/25/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 88 pointsIt's nice and very modern. A syrah, cab and tempranillo blend. Something is just a tad bit off though, suspect the syrah. Almost half is syrah, which probably isn't the classiest syrah around. Nonetheless, a bold take. Not complaining. |

2020 Bodegas Emilio Moro Ribera del Duero Malleolus de ValderramiroTempranillo more |
12/24/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 90 pointsNice, with some character yet supple. No oak, but ripe fruit and tannins instead. |

2012 Novelty Hill Winery Cabernet SauvignonColumbia Valley more |
12/6/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 92 pointsVery nice straight out of the bottle. Supple and well-rounded. Better than I recalled. Could be mistaken for a high end merlot, which is a high compliment from me. None of that closed Napa jumpiness. Maybe not the most elegant cab around, but truly enjoyable. Yet, there are even saw dusty chewy tannins present. |

2018 Donnafugata Etna Sul Vulcano Etna RossoEtna DOC Nerello Mascalese more |
11/17/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 92 pointsJust wow. I adore these rarer Italian grapes. The color indeed, as others said already, is deceptively light. But the aromas? Just wow! There's a lovely, jumpy immediacy novel to me. Or perhaps some Cesarene is similar. It might not be the most complex wine ever, but it sure is great. And above all, memorable. Beyond having minerals, something is just splendid. Like a rare type of acidicity. Which rather than being edgy, is tasty. My new favorite! |

2011 Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon ReserveColumbia Valley more |
11/5/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 92 pointsJust the way I like cab. Even at 12 years of age, open and somewhat fruity. Downright merloty, not closed and dusty like many Napa ones. Approachable, not pretentious. Relatively light on tannins for a cab, so likely around peak now. A little better than their H3 wines, which are off the chart QPR wise. |

2015 Torre de Oña Rioja lat 42 Gran ReservaTempranillo more |
10/27/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 90 pointsRock solid Rioja. What I would actually expect from a Gran Reserva. Everything is there at this young age. Actually had the 2016. |

2015 Frog's Leap MerlotRutherford more |
10/3/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 89 pointsRecognizable as a merlot, but much lighter than I would like. Up in WA state, better merlots can be had for 1/3 of the price. Vaguely Pomerolesque, but ultimately more just pretentious and mildly underwhelming. |

2017 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
9/29/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 89 pointsI mean, it isn't bad. But at this young age, I would never ever have guessed for this to, supposedly, be a Brunello. Too much fruit, too little sophistication and too little most other things. Not bad, kind of decent, just that there isn,'t anything else than simple fruit. New worlidshly simple, if you will. Meh. |

2013 K Vintners Syrah Morrison LaneWalla Walla Valley more |
9/28/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 93 pointsUnusual tannins, smoke and tobacco for a K Vintners syrah or really any WA Syrah. Almost like an old world syrah. Like it, but like some other K Vintners syrahs even more. Still, excellent in its own right. |

2020 Wente Vineyards Merlot SandstoneLivermore Valley more |
9/21/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 86 pointsMeh. I adore Merlot, paricularly Pomerol and WA state ones. This is quite pedestrian. As you would expect from California. Again, meh. Something is off in a delightfully fake way. Like some fake vanilla fake essence or something. Which I actually liked most about this. |

8/18/2023 - Kustjagr Likes this wine: 93 pointsThis is good. And I mean good. That Rioja Gran Reserva depth is developing, I can so tell. But this already now immensely enjoyable. A pleothora of things here already. Must buy 12 for the cellar. |
