12.89% abv. 70% Fié Gris (aka Sauvignon Gris.)
EYE: very hell, pastel gold and green-silver.
NOSE: plump, ready to rupture with sweet musk-lemon; tangerine; tall grass and wildflower; bracing chalk-peppermint; brined rose.
MOUTH: pretty much a perfect drink. It glances across several beloved genres at their best. The pacing is like hydrated cucumber, green tea, lime tonic. A loft of exotic orchard fruits (apricot, sumac, almond, preserved lemon) are bound with detailed stitching of tidal pond and igneous rock. This is as abundant as it is spontaneous, with natural acidity meeting fluent ripeness. It is ideologically expansive to the limit of zero. How to pair it with food? Can it be falsified by a dimly lit loin chop?—after a liquor-based aperitif? And if not, certainly it couldn't survive service of preciously molded cheese courses. Presumably. On that basis I am deducting four points.

cinco hace sixto (rodriguez): 7.5% abv. AP 06. I sense a great degree of coherence, accomplished work, and mediation in this latest series of MFR, culminating in a Spätlese. Substantially, this drink amounts to buoyant floral perfume, fallen, adhesive, waist-deep, and attached to bulks of roasted/superficially mature, lightly salted berries—green/amber/blush* colored, berries. A core clad in pistachio dough suggests material for benign cellar processes. Very pastel-translucent. Acidity stitches the roots/soil stratum to piled starch/pear/muscat. Wait 2-5 years to open another.
________
24 hours later, Herr Brewer reads pear. Me too. I loudly test this against the piña/fraise hypothesis, and discover all of it is confirmed, both sides of the argument. If I can't cellar this, I can hope someone does.

cinco hace sixto (rodriguez): 5/7. Dang. I didn't mean to drink these so fast. But it's a holiday..., so. Straight out of the fridge—45°F in the pour, with a spicy kale burgoo—this wine resembles the stained glass windows highest in a tower, viewed from inside. As it warms, there are shades of Château Le Puy, and 1990s Foillard. Casually hypnotic fruit emerges from ether stuck in caves.
________

5/5/2024 - Putnam Weekley Likes this wine: 92 points

cinco hace sixto (rodriguez): 7.5% abv. AP 30. NOSE: utmost restraint in the expression of flamboyantly mature Riesling berries. There's a rakish pulse of ruptured blueberry in its core. It's a transparent matrix, surrounded with salt-marsh mead, stiff flowers, strawberry, milled seashell, and MOUTH: classical, with a lunge in the direction of mouthwatering salt and solar acidity. A roughly hewn front of primordial rock advances over earnest piles of diverse, ripe fruit—nothing dominates; not pineapple, not apple, not citrus, not apricot. Acidity here is determined to press the action forward. Sugar rises to the occasion, directing traffic, while preserving an articulated drinking experience. I want to sit with it for a day or two. For now: 92-93.
________
24 hours later, it's still good, but like most MFR wines I drink these days, it's best on day 1. No collapse; just, it's ready to go when it's open. It's already warmed up and ready to pitch.

Mosel Saar Ruwer more

5/5/2024 - Putnam Weekley Likes this wine: 91 points

cinco hace sixto (rodriguez): 9.5% abv. AP 04. NOSE: rainwater meanders chirping lazy lightweight floral sensations; roses, limes, and sliced ginger bob in iced stone tea; with a curiously tender mix of citrus zest—orange, kumquat, pink lemon. (I could take over the world with a bath soap that smelled like this.) MOUTH: structure gripping with calcium, amused with lax strands of acidity, and weightless. There is no taste of sugar, really, or not until a pour rises above 63° F. The event insists on returning to a precisely earthy, appetizing bitterness, like something turned with a garden shovel in gravel. Pretty cool. Pretty unusual.
________
24 hours later, it's interesting to compare this to an otherwise similar MFR Estate Riesling. One tastes like a sketch of the other. This Weh. Sonnenuhr is differentiated by it's concentration, texture, and endurance, more than by its flavor/aroma and sugar/acid character. And it tasted better yesterday, barely.

cinco hace sixto (rodriguez): 9.5% abv. AP 28. NOSE: serene and subtle, with high-pitched lime/chalk and caper salt. Very clean. Adjustments and air open up sensations of orange filet, lemon blossom, and white lilac. MOUTH: sheer, impacted with information, sinuous, uncommonly transparent, with waves of saline smashing on jagged rocks. Acidity is like a bloom of assassins' daggers. A drink is hyper-mouthwatering, lean, and zealously dry. Flavor/mass quotient is off the charts. It's a little unusual.
________
24 hours later, the shoe-lacing shows a bit more loosely. When I drink it immediately after feinherb or lieblich, it tastes like celery. I'm glad I could grab another bottle.
48 hours later, it's still servable, but all that time open gains it not. Weigh a barely diminished wine against 48 hours for urself.

Certainly this wine is more demonstrative in aroma when compared to 2019 Chateau de Ripaille. Here there is honeysuckle, almond—no doubt. All of the things that David notes are clear and obvious. (Except maybe for iris, it’s not a reference point that I can use.) But I want to notice something else about the way this $40 wine smells: circus peanuts. (a confection unrelated to biological peanuts, and a mark of chemical reduction.) This may be an indication of healthy, youthful processes, and it confirms one of the intrinsic traits of Chasselas. The drink is pleasant. It is soft, malolactic silken, and completely without edges.

13.5% abv. NOSE: inspiring sincerity in invitation. Inky cascades of fresh black berries. Bones entwined with flowers (deadhead aesthetics taken to an extreme of accomplishment.) Plum. MOUTH: a sweet subfloor surrounds the drink at a striding pace. There’s a lone fracture of peanut, and then its gone, overwhelmed by aerated releases of flavor more vinous. The event of taking a drink swells gradually with flavor and texture, until a breach: edges of black, ash-dry tannin surrender in a weightlessly thick juice infill. The mouth-filling frame of flavor is decorated around the edges with bespoke selections of spring herb, salted roots and peels, and juniper. Expert acidity is relevant, and submerged. The finish is teased with a thread of succulent spring herb fronds.

Initial contact produces sensations of finely finished black grape slurry. It's tannic. Nothing sticky. Then gradually as it warms, various temperamental blooms of flavor action occur, starting with iodine/bouillon, then cave stone. Before long, a campaign of black raspberry acidity advances into focus. The event follows a pulsing artery of plain blue fruit sugar, though the wine is dry (and barely salted.) Surrounding this I find a busy environment of aromatic leaf (sage, yerba buena, eucalyptus,) seed (poppy, maraschino, caraway,) and mineral (I'm not a geologist.)

I'll pencil this in as a menu substitution for the finest foot-trod Lambrusco. If I had salumi in the house I would test it. "alk. 12.5%." This is my first drink of this Bob cuvée. Zsolt Sütó's Fred series comes to mind—by way of comparison—more than the liter of El Mismo Pais that preceded it more immediately. Alibernet vs. Blauer Port-you-geezer.

NOSE/MOUTH: Towering acoustic bouquet with loose strands of almonds, citron, peppermint, and chipped granite. Amazing movement; not so much and object of aroma and taste as slowly enacted texture. When the fabric rests, I notice significant, tempered, smells and tastes–and too many of them to itemize. There is no discontinuity. So where does this impressive degree of articulation come from? It's a lens of flavor. Tannins are pristine and chalky. Savory, meaty minerals. Ripe apricots cured in fleur de sel. Stone ivy mints. Crispy chicken skins. Bitter, charred bones.

Chalky, marine tannins. Polished mineral core. Sweet stones. Thoroughly attenuated yellow and orange fruits. Fascinating and impossible to sum it up in words. Bare sap attenuation impels tea and raspberries, weeping fluently with stone. Engaging complexity, bitter gravel roots, flushing action. After flirting with interesting leafy stem resin, It resolves in haste. Quite dry. Overbrewed iced tea tannin. 24 hours later, straight from the fridge, of course it tastes just as good, but now I notice how this amounts to a flavor-attenuated version of Luyt's red cru Pipeños—modulated, drier, a bit more carelessly drinkable.

Purchased from new inventory within the last few months—I suspect it's based in 2022 fruit, though I find no serial markings on the glass, labels, nor closure.
