2018 Bella Luna Sangiovese Hearthstone Vineyard

Paso Robles Adelaida District more

1/14/2024 - cnr128 Likes this wine: 92 points

Drinking beautifully. Bright fruit…red berries, pomegranate…maybe currant. Balanced, kind of juicy. Although it’s terrific now, I think in a few more years it will be even better. This is a really good California Sangiovese. Another winner from Bella Luna.

This wine is singing right now. Beautiful Sangio, it’s filled with oxymorons…delicate but bold, smooth yet striking. This wine has so much going on and is evolving from sip to sip. This is why I love wine I need more.

So at first, I thought…hmmm, there’s not much there, there but as it warmed and opened, things got interesting. Still a delicate for a Sangio, but there was a nice spiciness that started to come through, along with red berries…currant…silky tannins…yeah, it’s growing on me. It’s defiantly will pair better with lighter flavored foods. Looking forward to what it tastes like on Day 2.

Taste Wines for CA's Central Coast (San Diego Wine Co.): N: Toasty, smoky berries

P: Med, poss MF, body; Decent, almost swtish frt quickly met by an astringent pucker which almost TOTALLY irons itself out by the LONG, spicy finish. Approachable now, this probably still DESERVES cellaring into '19. [As of mid Mar '20, wine-searcher still shows 1 source @ $42].

Per label, 66% Sangiovese, and 17% ea C.S. & C.F.

N: CLOSED; Poss cherries/earth, with hints of spice?

P: Med body; Swtish frt on entry very nicely counterbalanced by acidity as it reasonably seamlessly evolves into a Long, slightly spicy finish. Has peaked, however, so drink ASAP.

Somewhat tired, still juicy sweet red fruits. Acid is in check, tannins are well integrated but there's just a subtle stewed oxidative character in the background.

Uncorking gave off an intense aroma of fruit jam. It had slow thick legs. Alas the anticipation was not realize on the tongue and there was absolutely no finish. Once I swallowed there was nothing. Unfortunately, at a price point of $14.99 there are many other competing wines that score better.

Taste Staff TOP Picks (San Diego Wine Co.): N: Closed; some toast/berries

P: Med body; SWTISH frt (threshold R.S.?), acidity decently balancing, this morphing into a LONG, swtish/tart, very slightly bitterswt finish. For drinking now & through the end of the decade, it's NICELY done in the style, 14.9% ABV [This vendor's $14.99 DWARFS the winery's $38, which would be QUITE a poor QPR, IMHO.]

This 2009 Pinot Noir comes from the Hearthstone Estate Vineyard on the highly desirable Westside of Paso Robles. Darker in color and bolder in flavor than its preceding vintages, this 2009 Pinot has a large spectrum of berry flavors with an appealing lushness and rich texture. Dried cherry and a hint of musky rose are distinctive on the nose and balance nicely with the flavors of fig, plum, and berries. Try pairing the Hearthstone 2009 Estate Grown Pinot Noir with earthy foods, pastas, and even dark chocolate desserts!

Saturated ruby. Intense spice-tinged aromas of cherry pit, cassis and licorice, with a floral note emerging slowly. Sweet and incisive on the palate, offering concentrated dark fruit flavors that tighten up on the back half. Rich yet lite Cabernet with strong thrust and persistence and smooth, late-arriving tannins.

Best value in Paso right now....the winery is letting this go for low price, and it's drinking like a higher priced GSM. Dark fruits and earthiness on the nose, and multi- layered in taste with a nice finish. A hint of barnyard on first opening which mostly vanishes with half hour of breathing. Buy it up, and drink it up.

Unique Sangiovese blend, super Tuscan if you will. The Sangiovese does drive the flavor profile with a leathery old world tone yet the cassis from the Cabernet Sauvignon backfills the fruit note. A little drying on the ending.
