We were impressed with this wine when first encountering it a decade ago. Pulling this from the cellar tonight, it brought forth an abundance of memories (as is wonderful when drinking an old bottle) of the time and place when first drinking it. This wine today was every bit as good, if not better, having withstood time in the cellar and still expressed the essence of when it’s beautiful notes were captured.

Great weekend with the Varners! Dinner at their house the night after Tum Tum (Birmingham, Alabama): Nice to revisit this wine, a generous contribution from the our friends cellar. Decanted 2 hours prior to dinner, drank after a '97 Spring Mountain Mountain Reserve. With a savory pasta, meat and mushroom sauce.

Dark, inky garnet color, no signs of age. Full nose showing dark fruits, Palate of dark fruits, plum, blackberry, currant, cocoa, smoke notes. Rich palate, fruits persist through mid palate. Full body, long finish.

Great wine from Philippe Melka (I think Julian Fayard was on this project as well.). I bought these wines when release, too bad they are not produced any more. Great valley floor fruits, rich and expressive and...turns out aging beautifully. This one has another 10+ years, but worth drinking now

Splash decanted. The wine is beautifully balanced. Very smooth with nice dark fruit running through the wine with vanilla undertones. Fantastic!

Wine is very balanced right now. Still exhibiting nice fruit tones and still some structure for a steak dinner. I would say the wine still has some years left to enjoy.

Cloudy bright ruby. Overripe plums, blackberries, raspberries, and light Indian spices on the nose. Unbelieveably intense notes of figs, stewed plums, and assorted dark berries. Tasty and interesting, but drinks quite hot. Drink this up now as it’s already on the decline.

Dark purple/red color. Nose showing dark cherry, spice and oak. Rich and fruit forward palate of plum, violets, cassis, leather and mocha. Floral, licorice, earth showing up on the mid palate.

Did better with time...good showing but decant is advisable. I dont think this really opened on this evening. Overall in a good spot, would drink over the next 3-5 years.

Felt a little flat and underwhelming. Fruit was muted, tannins light and mushy. Finish was just... there. It wasn’t bad, and it clearly had good materials, but it drank like a miss.

Decanted for 90 minutes, and not offering much for several more hours. By about hour four, this wine had developed more depth, with spicy raspberry peach flavors, some tannic bite and an extended finish.

Purple/red core color, no signs of age. Classic Oakville nose, dark red fruit, spices, earth and oak. Rich and fruit forward palate of black cherries, plum, violets, cassis. Floral notes and licorice showing up on the mid palate. Full bodied, voluptuous wine. Long finish

Haven't had this since release, drank at a lunch at the property w the vintner and winemaker Philippe Melka. Classic Melka wine, has really come into a good spot with the bottle age. Has a long arc ahead of it if wanting to cellar. The decant made a difference with this bottle, was bit tight when first opened, about 90 minutes later it was really singing

The wine is in a good place. Nice leather, tobacco undertone to give the wine structure with cassis and vanilla balancing the wine. Still wish these guys were making wine.

Nothing formal--just an excellent wine, with integrated tannins and acid. Red fruit profile over an earthy, gravelly body. Drink now or over the next few years.

At Gene and Georgetti's in Chicago w KOD, great Old School Italian and corkage friendly. Brought 2 bottles, drank this after a 2014 Big Table Farm Pinot...decanted for about an hour before drinking. First bottle from a batch purchased at the PNV auction, in my cellar from release.

Really well made wine by consulting winemaker Philippe Melka. The PNV in this vintage had a little extra TLC, has aged beautifully and drinking well now - should last another 10+ years (guess?). Nice to drink these in the 8-12 year range as they are most expressive in that stage (IMO). Decant helped with this wine, really did well after about an hour.

Outstanding wine, very limited wine which has deep, dark purple color, wonderful aromatics, dark fruit, tobacco and spice well integrated and balanced with long finish. I wish I had more of this wine.
