Right away you know this is going to be different: the color has a very faint trace of red running through it, not something I think I’ve ever seen outside of champagne. The first approach on the nose was not great, definitely more interested than good. Very raw, acidic, tannic elements, more like a cider than a wine. Not sure where the fruit went given that they remove the skins from fermentation right away. But I drank it over two night and it softened a bit on the second, with a bit more of the rounder, softer fruit elements coming out. The finish had a bit more character and a bit rounder on the length. Scoring is imprecise but I would’ve said 85 first night, 89 second, ergo 87. Not sure I need to try again but this producer definitely has her fans. |

2/22/2019 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 92 pointsRetail $50. The name, a nod to the cult-level wine, Clos Rougeard in Saumur-Champigny (Loire Valley), whose Cabernet Francs regularly fetch north of $100/bottle. While I have never tried any Clos Rougeard, I have travelled a bit in the Loire Valley and have made my way through my fair share of Cab Franc, and while this is far from an Old World style, it is quite tasty. Quite tasty. Dark red fruit dominate the nose, where the green pepper is notably missing (and while I like the bell pepper, it is not a necessary element). The palate is rich, fruit, complex, and delightful. Just short of a whoa. Excellent. 91-93 Points. |

2/22/2019 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 91 pointsRetail $25. “Southern Oregon” sounds like a rather broad appellation, and it is. But. I visited the region a couple of years ago (although not this producer), and there are some exciting wines being made in the region (no, not all of the best Oregonian wines come from the Willamette, dammit). Particularly dark in the glass with blackberry, cassis, black pepper, and just a hint of bell pepper (which I think is a lovely characteristic of the variety). Beautiful. The palate is full and fruity with just the right amounts of spice and tartness thrown in. Really nice. Excellent. 90-92 Points. |

2/22/2019 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 89 pointsRetail $30. Outside of sparkling wine production, it is rare to see a white wine made from red grapes, although I have seen a few whites made from Pinot Noir. To the best of my recollection, this is not only the first white Cab Franc that I have tried, it is the only one I have ever heard of. Pale straw, indistinguishable from any other white wine. Bright and cheery on the nose with white peach, citrus, and white acacia flower. The palate is quite tart and rather austere with Meyer lemon and a bit of white pepper on the finish. There is no doubt that this is an interesting wine and that it would pair well with a host of food options. For me? My Chicken with Mushrooms and Crème Fraiche recipe would be close to perfect. Very Good to Excellent. 88-90 Points. |

8/16/2023 - Jack Cranley Does not like this wine: 75 pointsThis has a really hyper-potent nose, and I can't say that I'm super excited about. It's definitely really rich in pyrazines, giving it a green, vegetal edge. It reminds me a lot of "white flower balm" - which, If you're not familiar, Is an analgesic balm based on camphor. Similarly it reminds me of Carmex lip balm. If you still don't know what I'm talking about, let's just call it menthol. |

7/17/2023 - Aparritz Likes this wine: 93 pointsIt looks like this wine is many different things to different people, perhaps depending on when it’s cracked. I popped the cork on a sat night and was immediately impressed with the freshness. But .. it was almost too fresh, too extracted, too bomby. But on night 2, 2 nights later (Monday) this was completely different and totally in balance, similar to the European / Loire style notes or even the northern rhone Syrahs tbat others mentioned. For me this needed those two days of oxygen to bring out the character. Or you could wait to pull the cork for a few more years. Amazing and worth that patience! |

5/29/2023 - oakville72 Likes this wine: 91 pointsIn style, a cross between the deep, dense Washington State Cabernet Francs and the lighter, more fruity Cabernet Francs from the Loire. Extremely well made and surprisingly drinkable despite its young age. Thankfully for this style, oak is not an intrusion. |

5/7/2023 - FelineAvenger Likes this wine: NRThis needs a LONG decant. I gave it 2.5 hours but there was still noticeable heat on it. Opened up a more over time during dinner. Would recommend shooting for 4 hours I think. A fair bit of fine sediment present to avoid pouring when decanting. |

4/1/2023 - FelineAvenger Likes this wine: NRYes. This is great, and is my favorite Leah wine from the 2021 vintage. Very light bodied in appearance. Strong floral nose, some rose and smoke on palate. No heat at all, this is totally ready to go upon opening without decanting. Lovely wine. |

1/6/2023 - Jack Cranley Likes this wine: 90 pointsThe nose on this is pretty much exactly what you might expect: somewhere right between a Gamay and a Cabernet Franc. Earthy and light fruit with a little green pepper streak. Good minerality. Just a super tiny hint of brettanomyces. Like, the good amount where it just adds a little extra note of something but doesn't take over the whole wine. |

12/31/2022 - deetz Likes this wine: 91 pointsVery pretty wine. Much better and more expressive on day 2 so I would recommend a substantial decant. Bummed I opened my only bottle thinking this should be drunk in its infancy. I suspect this continue to improve over the next few years and will hold well for the rest of the decade. |

10/22/2022 - The Rooster Likes this wine: 89 pointsNot as impressed with this Oregon Cab Franc as I thought I'd be, but it's still very good. Blackberry bramble, black cherry, strawberry jam, black pepper, sweet tobacco, and cola on the nose. Smooth and silky mouthfeel. Black fruits and spice. Well-balanced wine. I'd recommend cellaring longer and drinking towards the end of the drinking window. |

6/7/2022 - BadOyster wrote: NRI can't leave a rating on this one, either. Took a sip and it tasted like raspberry jam and blueberry pie filling ... which would be fine (and consistent with previous vintages), but it was so fruit-forward that I swear I could still taste residual sugar in it! It's crazy because the '16 was sensationally well-balanced, but this one strikes me as a full-throttle Aussie Shiraz (sans alcohol heat). Going to have to see how the next bottles treat me ... |

5/29/2022 - BadOyster wrote: 94 pointsWhoa this wine is very different than the last bottle. Nose of blueberry pie filling. Tasting deeper, darker, richer fruits than before. Acidity comes out as the powdery tannins finish. It’s still very pleasant but now showing more like new world Malbec - I don’t think I’ve had a wine “put on fat” like this in the bottle - wild! (lower score after the new rebalanced scale - still delish!) |

5/28/2022 - BadOyster wrote: NRNot going to leave a rating for this one while I wait to open a second. Unlike previous vintages, which have knocked my socks off, this bottling seems to have lost that crystalline, mineral, saline aspect, in favor of more floral and pronounced apple saucey profile, that is much more round but also a bit more oxidized than I'm used to. Hoping it's an off bottle. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

4/29/2022 - FelineAvenger Likes this wine: NRVery good, ready to drink now. Bursting with black/purple fruit (blackberry?), if I had been tasting blind I might have guessed Petite Sirah rather than Malbec. A bit different than I remember the 2016 tasting. You can almost pop & pour this, as there is very little heat out of the bottle, but I decanted due to visible sediment. Could drink this pretty quickly after decanting. Awesome with flank steak & mushrooms. |
