Screwcap, 14% alc.
Deep red with minor bricking.

Dusty cupboard, plum, and eucalypt on the nose.

Much more red–fruited on the palate than the recent Dutschke St Jacobi. Malty, jubey, slightly ferrous. Even and balanced, this is a very tidy wine for the money. Pretty fruit softening. Acidic backbone and with resolved tannins.

Drink now. Aways impresses with its VFM.

Purchased a case of 12 bottles when it was first released. Wine was rated the best wine under $25 in an article from 2020 (possibly earlier). First two bottles drank were too young and clearly needed laying down for a couple of more years. Opened a bottle of it this week and it is drinking beautifully. This is a far better bottle of wine now and represents very good value for $25.

This finds its groove, and I have to remember that this can be bought for under $15 AUD.

Have not had in many years, but this bottling is not how I remember this wine.

This is very high alcohol for a wine of this depth.

If you can get over the heat, it gets ths job done.

Preferred the Cabernet of the same vintage by a clear margin.

Will buy a box of the Cabernet, but will skip this vintage of Shiraz.

Relatively light in color for an old vine zin. Nose is fresh dark fruit with leather and volcanic notes. Body is medium with great “legs”; while high in alcohol this is not “ripe” or sweet as some zins can be but just a bit “hot” on the finish.

A 10 year old $15 Pinot. Expectations modest. Easily surpassed. A nice mellow red still with nice cherry hints and decent length. Sensational value. And cellaring has done no harm.

I think a few years of aging has benefitted this one. Creamy texture. Vanilla and floral scents. Melon, honey, and a saline finish.

{screwcap, 14.9%} Moderately developed rich red, with blue-tinged blackberry flavours, some chocolately oak, and a generally rich character. Medium/full weight. Soft friendly powdery tannins and lowish acidity. A slippery sort of glycerol texture – the alcohol helps, no doubt – leads to a medium finish of sweet fruit that doesn’t quite tip over the top. Shockingly good value at the ~$20 or whatever it cost, although I note it seems to have been the last vintage of this premium effort, so perhaps the grapes were really needed elsewhere. Seemed far more Barossa in character than Adelaide Hills. That all said, probably about ready to drink given the soft structure. Most surprisingly of all – this was barely overshadowed by the 2002 Penfolds RWT that followed it!

Black and blue fruit on the nose with a hint of oak and leather. Palate leads with blue and black fruit - blackberry in particular - before some red fruits start to come in on the finish - really nice clean fruit, nothing over-extracted here. Soft but not quite silky tannins, with enough acidity to keep things balanced. Not something I'd open for Saturday grilled steak, but it was really nice with roast beef on a Monday. Probably my favorite bottle from the cellar club shipment it arrived with.

Best before 11/04/23. 6,7% alcohol. Also named hazy IPA and NEIPA. Full bodied, smooth, rather fruity, showing ample tropical fruit and a bit of grapefruit with some hoppy bitterness towards the finish. This was quite delicious and certainly more a NEIPA than IPA.

Blend 2 - this is a "rustic Dansh shipyard spelt ale" brewed at the Mikkeller Baghaven ("backyard") brewery-blendery located at Refshaleøen, Copenhagen. Aged for 8 months in old Chardonnay oak barrels. Best before March 2026. 5,2% alcohol, 8,7 g/l acidity.

Hazy lemon-yellow color with faint green highlights. The nose feels somewhat funky and slightly phenolic with some zesty citrus fruit tones, a little bit of bretty leather, light woody tones, a hint of yeast and a touch of earthy spices. Although the nose is quite nice and attractive, the beer feels more aggressive on the palate with a moderately sour overall feel and quite angular flavors of pithy grapefruit, quite pronounced metallic bitterness, a little bit of yeast, light bretty notes of leather, a hint of grassy greenness and a touch of phenolic spice. The carbonation feels soft and mellow, but although the hop bitterness doesn't feel that high, the sourness turns it very angular and aggressive, overwhelming the finer nuances. The finish is dry, aggressively bitter and very long with flavors of pithy grapefruit, some grassy herbal tones, a little bit of leathery funk, light phenolic nuances and a hint of lemon juice.

It feels like this would've been a lovely, funky and enjoyably rustic farmhouse ale, if it weren't for the aggressive hop bitterness. I really don't mind high hops in a proper environment, like a West Coast IPA, but in a sour ale the low pH makes the hop bitterness feel very aggressively bitter and metallic - which is exactly what happens here. With a very modest hop bitterness the flavors would've had enough room to shine, while the sourness would've accentuated the bitter notes enough so that the beer would've been bitter enough. However, as a heavily bittered sour ale, this is just something very unbalanced with its unpleasant, aggressively metallic and angular bitter notes. I must say I'm not a fan. Definitely not worth the 20,57€ for a 0,75-liter bottle.

Double decanted about 2 hours before consumption. Still a little reductive and closed initially but then savoury blackberry fruit with a smidge of pepper and vanilla underpin. Fleshy on the palate, similar flavour profile - a little almost herbaceous underpin as well - with softly textured tannins. This bottle is a little out of whack. Perhaps in a dumb phase?
