2009 Adega Algueira Mencía Ribeira Sacramore |
Sommelier Journal, Gerry DawesSeptember 2010 90% Mencía, 10% Merenzao. Fermented with some raspones (“stems”) and aged in third-year oak; 14% alcohol. Black-red in color, with a balanced nose of fruit, oak, and minerals, this is a serious, rich, extracted, mineral-laced wine that shows its Merenzao, along with some oak and stem tannins. Delicious now, but needs at least two to three years of aging. God and Men in Ribeira Sacra |

2009 D. Ventura Ribeira Sacra Pena do LoboMencía more |
Sommelier Journal, Gerry DawesSeptember 2010 From a granitic, uncertified-organic vineyard in the Amandi region. 100% Mencía. Unoaked; 13.5% alcohol. Deep cranberry-red in color. The nose displays ripe currants and hints of cranberry, pomegranate, and graphite; the palate offers a well-balanced mix of perfectly ripe currants tinged with pomegranate fruit, cranberry-like acidity, and a compelling minerality. Reminiscent of a Cabernet Franc from Chinon, it repeatedly calls you back to the glass. God and Men in Ribeira Sacra |

2007 D. Ventura Ribeira Sacra Vina CaneiroMencía more |
Sommelier Journal, Gerry DawesSeptember 2010 From a slate, uncertified-organic vineyard in the Doade-Amandi region. 100% Mencía. Unoaked; 13.5% alcohol. A deep black-raspberry-cranberry color leads to a clean, complex Ribeira Sacra nose of red fruits and minerals. After a great burst of exceptionally complex, rich redcurrant, pie-cherry, and pomegranate fruit, there’s no oak to mar the haunting, mineral finish. This is one of the most delicious wines of the region and a real bargain for the quality. God and Men in Ribeira Sacra |

2009 D. Ventura Ribeira Sacra Viña do BuratoMencía more |
Sommelier Journal, Gerry DawesSeptember 2010 From 80-year-old vines in the slate-granite, uncertified-organic Viña de Balboa vineyard of Ribeiras do Minho. 100% Mencía. Unfined, unfiltered; 13% alcohol. Deep ruby, with a pleasant nose of pomegranate, ripe currants, and minerals. A deliciously drinkable mélange of pomegranate, cranberry, and currant fruit is backed by stony minerality. This is a textbook young Ribeira Sacra with loads of flavor, moderate alcohol, and no oak. 2008 Enológica Temera Ribeira Sacra AlodioMencía more |
Sommelier Journal, Gerry DawesSeptember 2010 85% Mencía, the rest Brancellao and Merenzao. 13% alcohol. Clear, deep, purple-tinged red in the glass. Graphite, currants, and earth emerge on the nose, followed by full-bodied currant, cherry, pomegranate, dark-chocolate, and mineral flavors on the palate. The wine is tannic and rustic, even with no oak, but is balanced by noticeable acidity. Good value. God and Men in Ribeira Sacra |

2005 Enológica Temera Ribeira Sacra Themera VVMencía more |
Sommelier Journal, Gerry DawesSeptember 2010 100% Mencía. Aged briefly in acacia and chestnut barrels; 13% alcohol. Deep, plummy black-red, with aromas of ripe red fruit, dark chocolate, minerals, and a touch of oak. This is a delicious wine with rich cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate flavors beautifully supported by light oak, acidity, and minerality. If you can still find this vintage, grab it. 2007 Guimaro Mencía B2MRibeira Sacra more |
Sommelier Journal, Gerry DawesSeptember 2010 Mencía with some Caíño Tinto. Aged 14 months in oak; 13.5% alcohol. The deep-black color is atypical of Ribeira Sacra. A nose of ripe pomegranate and blackcurrant fruit, oak, and minerals is followed by big, gutsy, sweet pomegranate-cola and oaky flavors, with minerals on the finish. A bit too much of a good thing; more like a wine from Bierzo than one from Ribeira Sacra. God and Men in Ribeira Sacra |

2008 Peza do Rei Ribeira Sacra ColheitaMencía more |
Sommelier Journal, Gerry DawesSeptember 2010 100% Mencía. Aged 12 months in French oak; 13.5% alcohol. Deep, but not impenetrable, black-red color. Ripe, rich currant and licorice notes are accompanied by a pronounced minerality for terroir lovers. The wine is low in acidity, with a shot of oak appearing on the finish. It offers market appeal, but little Ribeira Sacra typicity. God and Men in Ribeira Sacra |

2007 Raul Pérez Ribeira Sacra El PecadoMencía more |
Sommelier Journal, Gerry DawesSeptember 2010 Rumored to be the same wine as the Guímaro Barrica sold elsewhere in Spain. Says 100% Mencía on the label, but is actually 80% Mencía, 10% Caíño Tinto, and 10% Garnacha Tintorera. Fermented in 1,500-liter, egg-shaped Austrian barrels and aged for 12 months with bâttonage; 13.5% alcohol. Deep, opaque black-red in color. The nose offers extracted, ripe red fruits, along with oak and hints of minerality. Attractive redcurrant fruit, juicy pomegranate-like acidity, and touches of rusticity mingle with oak and minerals on the finish. A modern, commercial Spanish wine that is nonetheless preferable to some of the overripe fruit bombs on the market. God and Men in Ribeira Sacra |
