Open for business now, withe coffe bean, licorice, dried plum fig and hint of rasin, palate has expressive dark fruit, with an interesting bitter chocolate component, though there is still an hint of heat towards the finish.

2010 Sandlands Syrah Amador County

more

7/1/2015 - Replevin wrote: NR

I've tasted through much of the Sandlands catalog and have really enjoyed the offerings - this was the first time tasting the Syrah. The style is light and quite fruity without much in the way of tannic structure. Some nice purity of fruit, and good acidity, but I found it one-dimensional and not very compelling. Perhaps a good porch wine on a summer day? Tasted over several days.

The 25 years old vines yield 42 hectoliter per hectare in 2012. The wine is raised for 8 months in for 1/3 in new oak barrels and for 2/3 in inox. The result is a wine with a flawless and elegant bouquet with white fruits, litchi, flowers cardamom and fennel. On the palate a very clean wine as well with white fruits, litchi and some grasses. Concentrated but not thick, rather delicate and elegant. A harmonious and refined wine. Drink between now and 2017. 91+

This seems as if its grown a cooler region.Almost like a cross between Sonoma coast and RRV, bringing the best of both worlds. Forest floor + fruit!

The tannins (stems?) stand out a bit right now, however its drinking great already and should for years to come.

2012 Vaughn Duffy Syrah Two Vineyards

Sonoma County more

7/1/2015 - Dagalaifus Likes this wine: 95 points

The label on the 2012 Syrah from Vaughn Duffy, which I recently tasted, does not mention "two vineyards, so it's possible that these tasting notes apply to a different wine.

The wine is inky in the glass with a redolent nose of blackberry, leather and musk. In the glass, the wine is fruit-forward and full-bodied with the same blackberry, leather and musk, as well as kirsch and licorice. It has a lengthy oak and saline-infused finish. Another example of just how subjective tasting can be. Another taster described this wine as Shiraz-like. This Syrah Noir (a Syrah clone) was blended with Viognier skins and in my opinion has a flavor much profile closer to a Northern Rhone from a warmer vintage than anything from down under. An outstanding effort and at approx. $25 per bottle, the wine has a great QPR.

The bouquet is still a bit lactic with dark and red berries and cherries, some spiciness, minerals, laurel and a bit rustic/barnyard smells which blow off. On the palate juicy sweet red and dark berry fruits and cherries. Some spiciness like pepper and minerals. Good acidity and slightly sticky tannin. Still a bit too young. Wait at least until 2018. 91+

Barsac Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more

7/1/2015 - aagrawal wrote: 90 points

From a 750. Deeper golden-orange color than expected compared to other 2001s; nose has good intensity, citrus orange marmalade, swirling brings out gobs of botrytis spice, slight minerals but really quite a dense nose; palate is full bodied, rich but not dense, quite sweet but with just enough acidity to feel fresh if not overly vibrant, orange, slight caramel, fruit fades by the midpalate as it transitions towards a short finish. This is enjoyable, feels ready to drink now, balanced acid, good either by itself or with food, but it lacks the complexity of the best 2001s. 90-91
