2010 G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe

Nebbiolo more

5/25/2015 - coremill wrote: 88 points

PnP, which was probably not ideal for this. Lots of black cherry and tar, powerful with lots of tannins, but there's enough concentration to buffer them and the structure is relaxed enough to make this drinkable now. Better with food. Plenty of Barolo character.

What can I say. We opened 13 wines from my cellar last night and this one hands down was clearly on another level from all the other wines. First of all we had raw meat, mint, wet leather and dark fruits on the nose. The wine was smooth, balanced and made in a style the screamed of Northern Rhone.

This struck me much differently tonight. Outstanding ripe red fruit, spice and a nice mineral component. Forward, fresh, up front but the spice is really what did it. No need to wait, drink now.

Quality vastly better than its label suggests.
A blend I have not seen outside S Africa, Syrah and pinotage, works remarkably well Not pretending to be complex or sophisticated, this is a warm, easy drinking balanced offering with a zingy peppery finish. Juicy, smooth, much more than the label suggests

consistent with notes of 10/8/2013...this wine's only fault may be that it is too smooth, too polished.

Dark brambley blackberry and blueberry jam with long silky charcoal cedar finish. This young Syrah has tons of tannic structure, thus requires 3 hours of decanting before it starts revealing its layers. Will wait a few years before opening another.

Straw color. Nose: lemon curd, pineapple core, and Asian pear with accents of vanilla wafer, brioche, meringue, toasted hazelnut, lime zest, orange blossom, nutmeg, and river stone. Medium body on the palate: lemon/lime curd, pineapple core, and green apple framed by brioche, tangerine zest, vanilla cream, hazelnut, white pepper, and clove. Medium+ acidity. Lingering citrus zest, green apple skin, brioche, and clove on the moderate/long finish. Nicely balanced with excellent focus and good length. Pair with baked/broiled whitefish, chicken salad, soft creamy cheeses, or white sauced pasta dishes. Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Disappointing. The bottle actual "popped" as it released the CO2 upon opening the screw cap (very unusual in Portugal). This is a simple, watery, citrus water, effervescent export edition of what can be a delightful wine. After having just spent a week tasting in Portugal - including a stop at this winery - this does not represent what they produce and is an example of why Portuguese wines struggle for wider US marketshare. Stop the CO2 infusions, it is not necessary and the export market does not want it.

From a great looking bottle, this wine had a light gold center and clear rims. The nose was low intensity when first opened with hints of smoked ham. After 4 hours the medium- intensity nose showed pear, apples, and a hint of almond paste.

Light yellow, pungent nose with mineral, lime, salt air, slight stone fruit. More of the same on palate with a long, lingering after taste with just a smidgen of RS. This stuff is absolutely delicious. A patio pleaser for sure with maybe a little more stuffing to please riesling lovers.

This didn't do a whole lot for me. Some red cherries, hints oak spice, drinks clean with good acidity and not overly 09-ish, but lacks complexity and midpalate depth. Fills out a little more with air. Not bad, but a little disappointing.

Nose:spicy raspberry, with hints of earthiness but pretty clean.

Palate: some density. Deep raspberry and blackberry, crushed stones, and a slight leafiness.

Creamy and velvety texture but a bit of rustic acidity after a while open. In a great place right now but has a couple of years left in it.

PNP. cork perfect. color garnet. nose w dark cherry and cola. swishing shows nicely balanced acid and tannin structure that support the fruit and loamy flavors. goes a little stemmy on the finish. sipping gives polished cherry fruit with a bit of spice and again some stem/skin on the finish. I think that these will age nicely

Garnet color, flavors of Black Current, Blackberry and a hint of Raisin. Had hints of some meat, cocoa tobacco and a little white pepper. Seemed just a little bit disjointed and a little over oaked to fruit, dont know if it was just an off bottle ... and IMHO think its in its drinking window and will not improve much more with age, but think easily has another 5+ years. So Glad I have a few more to try again in few months, gorgeous wine.
