No formal notes - over dinner. Plummy nose, notes of spices, chocolate. On the palate concentrated and powerful, lots of fruit, good acidity and structure. The alcohol is covered well. Very long finish. Very good. 93-95?

2020 Fattoria Petrolo Boggina A

Val d'Arno di Sopra Sangiovese more

5/17/2024 - pemazel Likes this wine: 92 points

What an outstanding Sangiovese this is. Juicy, fine quality, long aftertaste. Still pretty young of course, so the second glass was a bit more agreeable than the first (PnP). Not in the shadow of the great Galatronas (100% Merlot) of this fattoria, but so enjoyable.
A means matured in amphoras, B is white (bianco) and C means classico.

From https://www.superiore.de/:

“Bòggina A” Sangiovese Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC 2020 (BIO)
Fattoria Petrolo | Tuscany
Petrolo s.a. s.s. | Loc. Petrolo 30 | IT 52021 Bucine

"Bòggina A" Sangiovese Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC 2020 (BIO)
The A in the name of the Boggina stands for the natural wine aged for about 6 months in terracotta amphorae of 400-600 Liters each, which is bottled in an edition of just 5,000 bottles without further addition of sulphites. Bright, luminous garnet red. The bouquet is ethereal, very delicate and nuanced, with a very precise fragrance interpretation of the Sangiovese grape. Medium-bodied, with a beautiful structure and authentic Sangiovese fruit with a salty vein. The finish is highly drinkable, with silky tannins and a beguiling length. A masterpiece of beauty and elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

"Pure red wine with aromas and flavours of cherry, strawberry, iron, earth and tobacco. Lean and supple in texture, with an elegant profile and a long finish that reflects the fruit and spicy notes." WINE SPECTATOR

"Bright, medium-dense ruby with a slightly pale rim. Very fragrant and appealing nose, of ripe raspberries, fresh plums, plus notes of cinnamon, some cardamom. Firm tannin on the palate, shows good tension, but at the same time seems a bit raw, salty on the final." FALSTAFF

"The Petrolo 2020 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina A presents the Sangiovese grape with a fresh, concentrated, almost crisp personality. This organic wine opens with aromas of wild strawberries or fragolino, lilac, blood orange and rusty earth. It has an almost shiny or brilliant character. The Bòggina A shows plenty of primary freshness, fine tannins and balanced acidity." WINE ADVOCATE

"Very floral and pretty with aromas of orange peel and cherries that transition into a medium body with lots of tension and brightness. A dusty texture of tannins." JAMES SUCKLING

"The 2020 Boggina A, 100% Sangiovese vinified and aged in amphora, is possibly the best vintage of this wine I have ever tasted. Finely sculpted and nuanced, the 2020 sizzles with energy. Crushed rocks, red fruit, spice, mint, rose petal and orange peel are all beautifully delineated throughout. Just as important, the 2020 doesn't have any of the awkward aromas and flavors that have penalized some previous editions. Superb." VINOUS

My best Galatrona to date... WMK our local Italian master, and DQ though this may have been a.. Nebbiolo!

Acidity M+, Balsamico nose made this an ubiquitous Italian. Palate was much improved with red fruits and luscious oak. Eucalyptus, tea and rosemary!

To have this alongside DavidQs mesmerising Messorio 2003, my wine fell a little short but still stood up respectably in the company of giants.

Soil is rich in clay in combination with schist, marl and sandstones, allows the concentration of all the noble components of the grapes, fundamental for the great structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

Denomination: Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC – Vigna Galatrona, Merlot
Certification: Organic
First year of production: 1994
Production volume per year: Circa 30,000 bottles.

Refined with bright acidity and a blueberry and dark-chocolate character. Superb balance between acidity and ripe fruit. Minerals and dark fruits, too.

Very Pomerol, this is a pure Merlot... Yes 100%! Galatrona is the “Grand-Cru” of Merlot by Petrolo, only made with the grapes from the vineyard of the same name planted between the end of the 80’s and half of the 90’s with low vigor Bordeaux clones.

Soft tannins were masterful for a bottle barely a decade old, this still has 5 plus years of life to its apex! The team thought again.. 2 said Supertuscans and 1 Brunello. What a chameleon.. no one said 100% Merlot!

Shared this with RN, DQ, SKT, WMK and LMC at our March Italian Stallions session.. magnificent night!!

Infanticide. I'm not going to give this wine a rating because it was just far too young, primary, closed and brutish. This needs at least 10 more years to integrate and evolve. I hope it comes together because it has the stuffing to be a great wine.

Red and black currants, wet earth, spices, hints of chocolate. A bit thin and not “grand” (for the lack of better words) enough vs my expectations.
In its early drinking window.

Always a pleasure to come back to this Italian Merlot gem, grown organically, vinified with native yeast in cement vats, matured for 18 months in FR oak barrels, 33% new, frequent batonnage for first 6 months. Intense rich aroma of blackberries, violets, cassis, plums, roses, herbal hints. Full body, as always I am amazed by elegance and finesse of this Italian Merlot, full of black fruits, but never too dense or overpowering, also smoky, earthy and herbal notes, medium+ acidity, finely woven medium+ tannins.

Decanted 90 minutes I think on trip to Florida to drink with Mark1npt & Carol. Not fully mature yet but excellent. Lots of tobacco, leather & spice. I thought the fruit still a bit young and a bit of tartness but minor. Will get into zone in another 6-12 months. Excellent extraction & mouthfeel. One of the better Italian wines for sure.

Brought to the table by WGDM tonight.....needs every bit of 1-2 hours of decant/air. Loads of leather and aged red fruit on the nose. To me, it drinks like a wine that is 5-10 years older than it is. Having said that, it is beautiful........soft, red fruited, smooth and fantastic! Thanks for bringing this one, Rick! I loved it..........

This was lovely, needed 30 min in decanter to soften the tannins, and was ready. Forrest floor aromas, lifted and focused, so relaxed but not tired or bored. Savoury and deliciously easy to enjoy. In the sweet spot at the moment.

This wine has finally come around. Decanted for 90 minutes. This is a plush and round expression of Italian Merlot that is more savory than sweet. Tannin has started to soften and it is drinking well now.

They've left a tiny note of volatile acidity on this, adds lift and elegance. It isn't especially varietal, but the ageing potential is clear. Red cherry, black cherry, plum and blueberry fruit, oak influence is still powerful. This will age well, although it is quite drinkable already.

Homemade Lasagne and what else… Italian Super Tuscan, this time 100% Merlot.

Prior tasting notes are spot on and my prediction that the edgy tannins will melt in two years luckily too🤗🤗🤗

Without food the wine is fairly rich, but with food it is sublime.

Cant get my head around this. 4th bottle presenting with overripe and dried fruit, as in further advanced wine, and became pretty imbalanced. Maybe excessive heat exposure at some point of the whole case, which seems unlikely as the first couple of bottles were in pristine condition and the rest was stored properly thereafter. Anyway, I really wanted to like this but will have to try carefully at some occasion before rebuying.

Together with Gino at Chateau St Gerlach (Les Salons).

And suddenly it appeared on my way: on a wine liste at a non too exaggerated price.

Drunk with "Gently cooked rib of Porc Qualité Ardenne" first, then at its own.

And I loved it: certainly within my top-10 of reds.

I agree with Falstaff who tasted it in 2019:
"Deeply coloured, brilliant ruby-violet. Very clear, distinct nose with complex interplay with blackberry, dark currant and ripe blueberry, plus fine resinous notes and tobacco. Fresh on the palate initially with a lot of juicy, ripe berry fruit and opening up with fine-meshed, dense tannin, salty and very long."

And I disagree with the tasters here who write that it is still much too young now: in all its vigorousness it is magnificent!
