2008 Mandola Sangiovese

Texas Hill Country more

- Garnet color. It's somewhat balanced with a medium/full body. Linear texture with a medium finish - Possibly waited too long to drink and was past prime. It lacked the full flavor I expect from this variety, actually much thinner than when I tasted it at time of purchase.

Nice hottub wine. Goes well with picante bbq pork. Anyone who thinks this is not a SWEET wine drinks koolaid and coke instead of water. Not a dessert wine, but very sweet and lots of fruit. Not much else.

wines for this winery, one can appreciate the quality and how it impressed those first visitors. Made primarily of Sangiovese grapes, this wine is also blended with other varietals as well. The result is a very smooth and pleasant wine. You’ll notice a touch of sweetness, but it’s just on the edge of being considered a sweet wine. The balance between the sugars and acids is very nicely done. The bright red color is an eye catcher and the cherry and strawberry flavors are notable after the first few sips. It is a luscious fruit forward selection that is very nicely balanced. This wine pairs well with spicy foods, but can stand on its own as an after dinner treat too. It’s not common to find such a good quality red wine that is suitable for any drinking mood; however, we find this one very versatile. Either way, you’ll likely find a reason to say, “Just pour me a little bit more”. This is one of the original wine bottles from what was once the Mandola winery. We only wish we would have bought more! Now it is Duchman Family Winery, which is still a very cool place to visit if you get a chance.

11/28/2011 - ckinv368 wrote: flawed

Opened and there were tartrate crystals saturating the cork, and running all the way down the inside neck of the bottle. And not stuck to anything, just sitting there loose and wet. More crystals than I've ever seen in any bottle of wine.

Wine seems a bit flabby and unbalanced. Really no tannin, and seems like very little acid left suspended within the wine, but also no real fruit either. Just a hint of bitter stone fruit at the middle of the palate. Very little nose as well. Can't really point to a "flaw," but the wine seems to be sort of cooked and off. Believe something major had to occur for it to throw so much acid. Will chalk it up to a flawed bottle, rather than flawed winemaking.

Sits as light straw colored water in the class. No legs. Quiet, occult nose. Grape, yes. Character? This does not bode well (?)

Sips like a Chardonnay Bordeaux and Torrantes. So much backbone. Citrus, rind but with the chemical rush of a Chardonnay. OMG this is so solid with garlic and basil.

Bhd Adz Vino.

Splendid wine in respect to the grape and the vintner. Top notch mineral. Minimal sweet. Apple and grass atop pillowy tannin.

The wine does not have the varietal character of a syrah. Maybe this is what Texas syrah tastes like. There is a plastic, band-aid type aroma. On the palate some cherry, and red raspberry comes through nicely. Not much depth of flavor but it is pleasant. Finish is dry and has a burst of fruit then drops off quickly. ($8)

Bright ruby red color. Earthy aroma with bright cherries, cedar and a bit of medicinal cough syrup. Some heat on the nose, even after two hours. This wine has a not quite ripe cherry flavor mixed with white pepper. Drying palate and acidy finish.

Ripe peach/apricot fruits, a little bit of white flower, good acidity...it actually tastes like a Vermentino...nice.

Very dark plum color, the nose is rather muted with some hints of plum, on the palate getting dark berries, good gob of oak, almost a little shoe leathery on the finish with some tannins. Nothing great here given the price

Burnt/rusty tint. Lacks body, having little in common with Italian Sangioveses. Palate is thin and one dimensional. Fnish is reasonably long and pleasant, but this is not a wine I would purchase, expecially not at $16.00
