12/1/2022 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 92 pointsSome will look at this rating and think I'm delirious OR that I've only had experience drinking grocery store wine, while dealing with a head cold....well, there's a style for everyone and Manfred Krankl, Dave Phinney, and Curt Schalchlin have made a boatload of $ in this hedonistic, who-cares-about-ABV%, ripeness bordering on sluttiness style. I like it for what it is and can appreciate the stylistic creativity. Would I drink this daily?...No. Would I gulp it down as, say experiential research and fun...absolutely. |

10/23/2020 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 92 pointsAll the sub 90 point reviews, while obviously objective per personal preference...are wrong. This wine is incredible. It is DEFINITELY a classic Bordeaux/Old World-styled wine. Not a crowd pleaser with mass appeal. Acid, tannin, backbone...all at the forefront right now so most won't find this to be easy-drinking and thus, will give it poor ratings. Graphite, lead, pencil shavings, sage, damp Earth...all lead the palate. The Cabernet Franc, while the dominant grape, doesn't really reveal itself until about hour 2. This is a wine that has ample fruit, balanced by terroir, acidity, deft use of oak, and more...all after a 4+ hour decant. The fruit is the more muted and last to arrive to the party, on the palate. I'm glad not many people are giving this the credit I believe it deserves...means there will be more out in the market for me to buy and cellar. If you have these, don't touch them for at east another 1-2 years. If you do, make sure to give it a good, 3+ hour decant. 92 points now. Potential 93-94 points. 3 people found this helpful, do you? 2012 Sterling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon PlatinumNapa Valley more |
10/16/2017 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 92 pointsThis wine was fairly muted upon opening, let breathe for approx. 30 mins and then poured. After decant, the nose was lacking in primary fruit (which was not necessarily a bad thing) and resembled more of an old world claret. Dark berries, cassis, pencil shavings, some game. Palate followed suit with the addition o some creamy notes from the oak influence that were complimentary. The fruit was secondary and stayed in the rear through the medium finish. This was beautiful and elegant, but don't see it improving more with age. Drinking in its prime now. Drink or hold for a maximum of another 1-2 years. Nice QPR, got this for $20 on clearance. |

10/2/2017 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 92 pointsI believe this is one of the unsung values in solid CA cab. Always consistently good. Solid core of black and blue fruit, creamy, toasty oak. Firm tannin structure without being overly austere, well-balanced acidity to allow a nice potential ageing window for at least another 4-5 years. I would say this is in its prime drinking window now though. |

8/23/2017 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 90 pointsAgree w/BSPAHN...This was much better than I expected. "Lots of tight acidity at the beginning, but with some air it tasted fresh with tons of red fruits." Crunchy bright red fruit (cranberry, raspberry), with a minor note of stony minerality and light terroir running through the back end. Reminiscent of a Villages level Cotes de Nuits. No need to wait on this, I think it's squarely within it's drinking window. The wine evolves in the glass starting at about the 30 minute mark. So, would recommend a splash 30 minute decant and then enjoy. |

8/8/2017 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 90 pointsI think this wine usually represents your solid every day drinking wine. It's becoming more consistent with lower alcohol for a CA pinot. Bigger and slightly extracted in that typical SLH style, but definitely not flabby or offensive. Dark berry, definitely primary and slight rich oak tones as well gives it a fuller, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Great value. Not overly complex, just easy/fun to drink. You can find this at Costco for ~$14 USD...to me that's a no-brainer. |

2014 Couloir Pinot Noir John SebastianoSta. Rita Hills more |
8/8/2017 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis wine is very solid. Richness and purity one would associate with typical Sta. Rita Hills pinot. Bright bing cherry profile. Mostly primary right now. Very tight upon opening, improved with each sip in the glass over the course of about 3 hours. Even better on day 2. This was probably opened too young. Not hot, flabby or cloying. Very well constructed wine. I can see this hitting its stride in more of a 2018-2022 window. However, highly drinkable with about a 1-3 hour decant. Highly recommended. |

8/1/2017 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 92 pointsNot sure why the ratings for this are so low. This is a highly representative iteration of new world CA RRV pinot. Excellent nose of dark fruit, black cherry, cherry compote, cola, and spice that translated seamlessly to the palate. Medium/medium+ finish. Medium tannin and medium+ acidity. This is an excellent wine that would drink well with food or on it's own. Drank over 2 hours and each sip gained momentum and improved with air. This very well-structured wine has a VERY long life ahead...probably at least another 5-7 years. A HUGE QPR from WTSO at $19.99 USD. If there's a better RRV pinot at this price point, I'm not aware it exists. 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

7/24/2017 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 91 pointsHave had several bottles of this under the radar gem over the last 7 years. It is definitely on the back-end of it's life, but I still see it lasting for another 3-4 years. The backbone and tannins are still present, but it doesn't really require a decant. Pop and pour is just fine. It's still very silky with a medium to long finish. Merlot dominant claret blend that was an amazing find. If you can find some, I recommend stocking up...plus it's high on the geek factor...they signed a non-disclosure with the vineyard they bought the juice from...some have postured that is was Screaming Eagle or Eagle's Trace...I never really found out where the juice came from...but it doesn't matter. It's good juice no matter where it came from. |

7/5/2017 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis is such an elegant, esoteric wine. Single vineyard Carignan that is VERY versatile and food friendly. I would put this in the same category (from the versatility perspective) as Pinot Noir and Grenache. I could see this effectively pairing with a wide variety of meats, cheeses, pastas, steak salads, eggplant, etc. Highly recommend. |

6/15/2017 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 89 pointsThis is just a straight forward gulpable party wine that is a true crowd pleaser. I wouldn't serve to wine snobs or pretentious critics, but this is a killer value with blue and black fruit, toasty oak that is not overdone, bramble, spice, some forest floor and gamey meat flavors that way over delivers for the $11 USD I paid for it. It's more of a Field Blend of mixed blacks that I'm finding myself drawn to more and more these days...30% Syrah, 24% Barbera, 24% Zin, 22% Petite Sirah. Not a long term ager...so drink up and enjoy now through the end of the year. |

4/17/2017 - sellerscellar Likes this wine: 90 pointsThis wine still has a lot of stuffing left. Upon opening, first glass was very dry, austere, tannic. Second glass about 30-40 minutes later was really singing. Fruit began to come to the forefront, tannins mellowed and the wine rounded out. This probably still has another 2-4 years at least. |

1/16/2017 - sellerscellar wrote: 86 pointsVery average. This bottle was much different than my last. This one tasted like it was cooked. Bricking on the color in the glass was the first red flag and the first sip was sappy and flat. Cork was intact so not sure what happened here, but definitely not a good bottle. First bottle was primary, bright, and had nice acidity and lift. |
