We had moved about 70 bottles from the Draper house to the new wine room in Heber. This bottle was actually a test to see how some of the wines held up to not "Perfect", storage. Beyond it''s Ideal drinking window, I was not expecting much. It was very good. It had lost a bit of its umph from earlier tastings but it mellowness was not offensive. The florals had died a way but the smoky meaty vanillaish licorice essence came through only a bit more mellow. I think that was my last one.

Wow. Nice surprise. The extra year of aging comes shinning through. At 15% alcohol, I though it might burn some of the taste away, but it was delicious. Inky Dark and had great legs, the first thing that hit me was the herbaceous overtones of sage, and rosemary as well as a full dark fruit. There was an essence of leather and tobacco. It has the perfect balance of acidity, fruit forwardness and tannin. Glad i got a few left.

I try not to read the tasting notes before posting, but it has been a while since I posted. I was tasting this for my wife. It was a deep dark purple and was fruit forward. I got plums and meaty spices on the nose. It was a bit viscous but not sticky. It was acidic but not offensive. Smooth is what my wife called it. She mentioned cherries and candy (honey of butterscotch?). It was nice but not overly complex.

As part of our usual Christmas Eve tradition, we headed out for dinner. Thank you to the team and crew at Piccolino’s for being open and fixing up a great meal. I brought the Sangiovese as I was intending to have the Veal Oso Bucco. Instead my son in law, Ryan and I enjoyed it. He had the lamb Oso Bucco, but I gave into the Lobster Cannelloni in lobster bisque sauce. So how did that work?

Dark opaque inky purple out of the decanter (30 minutes). My son and his friend made fun of me while I was looking smelling and tasting, but the grief was worth it. I did not get the overwhelming tannins as some other had suggested. It was well balanced. It had an easy lavender smell, but the other florals seemed a bit elusive. It is a medium bodied pour. Not thick and jammy and not too thin. A grand name, Fontodi is 100 % Sangiovese and is in a very serious growing area just about 15 miles south of Florence. This wine had the acidic feel to it, but was subtle like the acid you feel when enjoying a roasted pepper. That taste, a long with Italian herbs (went home and sniffed several to match-got thyme and oregano), and earthy clay, but plenty of fruit to round it out. Very complex and would agree that this is not done aging.

I can strongly recommend this wine. If you want to see the classic countryside of this vintner, Google Map Panzano In Chianti FI, Italy

Devin and I held an impromptu Christmas Veranda Time and were pleasantly surprised to have 35 people show up despite some surprise rain and week before the Big Day. We opened a total of six wines, three white, three red, trying to cover all the bases not knowing what pot luck side dishes would arrive. The main staple was a tomato based chicken orzo soup that was a hit.

This was a fall back Chardonnay for the night. It was as popular as ever. When offering the Sauv Blanc, the Puligny, most chose this as their white. Don’t get me wrong, a great Chardonnay ,but they missed a chance to try the White Burg. Okay this was a darker yellow than the PM. It is very rich and creamy. Pears, peaches, and citrus come popping through. It hangs around the mouth quite while and went with the various cheese we had out that night. I can’t believe I have no tasting notes on this as it has become of daily house white. Good stuff all around.

This white burg continues to kick butt every time we try it. I wrote a great review of this back in June so for my Cellar Tracker friends I’ll try not to be too repetitive. Pale straw yellow and lots of flowers on the nose. (lavender maybe) It is a big giant beautifully built chardonnay, but as I mentioned it was not heavy like some. It was fruitier than buttery. You got minerals and fruits and just the right amount of acidity to keep you paying attention. I am down to just a couple of these now, but look forward to buying more at auction.

This white came highly recommended by Wine Spectator in a recent review. Light straw yellow in color. Very crisp. It was crisp indeed and citrusy. A lot of the tasting of earlier vintages suggest kiwifruit, but I did not get it. In looking up the winery, I was tickeld to doscover it was only a few miles from Table Mountain in the Constantia Region in the Cape of Good Hope. I had the pleasure of visiting there with my good friend Douglas and a great guy and PADI employee Peter D. The wine brought back memories. The score is a result of too many great wines. I look forward to trying this alone some evening soon.

The Red hit of the night was this Sonoma Pinot Noir. I knew this was good as I have tried it, but brought it to the party for one special lady, Lupita. When people asked for red I mentioned the cab and CdP and then said I had a Pinot. Many went for this pour and loved it. After the third request, I went aside and kicked the tires on it. It had been open about an hour and was releasing well. I am not sure exactly was aromatic is, but I think that’s what this was. Hints of berries and herbs on the nose. Ruby Garnett in color and silky in the glass. Silky also in the mouth. Cherry, tea, and earthy mushroom were coming across. We went through 5 bottles during the night. It was a hit.

Devin got us into this wine as she was not a fan of the big tanniny cabernets that I was so fond of. We have tried many of CdP’s and this is one of our favorites and enjoy sharing it. The rich deep color is spot on perfect for this Rhone. On the nose, the fragrance of licorice and lavender and herbs. In the mouth, silk and jammy. Dark cherry, berries and a hint of smoke. I drank this Acapella and it was quite enjoyable.

Thank God the 70s and the sweet blush of white zin are a distant memory. This dry crisp red was really good. Deep dark inky purple after about 30 minutes open. Even though this is a bit long in the tooth (Drinking window 2009-2013), it presented really well. DNA has confirmed that the Zin grape is Italian but originated in Croatia, but who cares. I got raspberries and tree fruit on the nose. In the mouth the tingle of a typical Zin. A really nice wine that went with the 26 different types of cheese everyone brought. My favorite was the smoked Swiss when matched with this chewy red. I think proper and to much cellaring softened this as I did not get the tannins and acid everyone was commenting on below. If you have any left (I’m down to two) drink it now with a smoked gouda or smoked Swiss. Perfect.

Devin and I had a nice dinner at Picollinos for our 36th anniversary. For a change, I wanted to try Sal’s house wine offerings and was pleasantly surprised. This Chianti Classico Riserva did quite well for a house wine. Unfortunately they brought glasses of wine (The Corvina blend and this Chianti simultaneously) The Chianti was very good. In the glass, it was dary purple in color and held the glass better than the Corvina. On the nose, subtle but fresh berries and cherries, and oak as in tree oak smells. In the mouth the expected burst of Sangiovese acid, (tannins had blown away but remnants remained), then an earthy feel. Though good, it did not match perfectly with the veal Oso Bucco and saffron risotto (which by the way was marvelous). The grade reflects the possibility that the bottle had been opened too long. Perhaps the magic lofted away. Nozzole is know for very good Chianti’s.

I was expecting this to be lighter in color than the bright red that presented itself. It was not inky or purple but red red. On the nose, I got cherries and nutty smell. It was not overly complex. On the palate, the hint of nuts might have been almond. The berries came through as well but not overwhelming. There was an earthy mineral feel to it. It accidently paired well, I’d say very well with my choice of starter, Zuppa di vongole e gamberi. It was a hearty tomato based broth and this Amarone Volpollechella worked well. Grading was tricky as a stand alone, maybe high 80s. Matched with the incredible soup in was low 90s.

Pulled this from the rack and opened about 45 minutes before tasting. Deep dark purple, but not as viscous as I was expecting. Nose was great, but not over the top. Some florals and a hint of berries. Deeper and richer in the mouth. Mineral like graphite like texture at first. Softend to a pepper like feel and taste. I'd agree with Triplet below as it was smooth almost to the point of being under sophisticated. Great glass of wine. Enjoyed a glass with the steak and one after. Look forward to finishing the bottle and glad i have a few more on the Eastwall.

Thank you Dave Hanna for allowing Devin and I a chance to do something special. The Reserve Napa Valley is a special place with very special wines. It was a pleasure to try the 2007 and 2008 Reserve.

Christian and Hanna’s team did a magnificent job of presenting some incredible appetizers for the great wines we were tasting.

The 2007 came across as really dirty. It had a really strong in your face concentrated fruit presentation in the mouth. It actually had a very Merlotish texture, feel, and taste to it. And, not a great merlot either. I know this is a blend of Cab, PV, Malbec and Merlot, but it was really heavy dirty earthy pour that I did not really care for.

You can’t actually buy this wine except at auction, as this is an estate made blend for Reserve Member’s only. Supposedly this goes for about $1,100 a bottle at auction. I won’t be waving any paddles at that price.

The 2008 was a completely different story that the 2007 (which got me thinking that maybe I may have received a bad bottle?). It too was deep dark ruby colored, perhaps a small shade shift lighter.

This had a spectacular nose and despite kicking of a nasty summer cold, spice, florals (tropical), and berry aromas embraced my nose. It held the glass well but was not as viscous as the 07. This was fund to watch and smell.

In the mouth, pure pleasure, a perfect balance of fruit, earthiness, acidity, tannins, and berries. If it had been so gauche, I would have had more than one pour.

Again there is no accurate value because there is not a retail market for this wine. However it appears at auction, this comes in a lot cheaper than the 07.

The 08 is early in its drinking window and should continue to impress for several more years.

We had a casual evening with BBQ Pork Sliders and Salad. I enjoyed a Belvanie Caribbean Cask, but Devin chose a white. I had this as part of a 2014 stash I bought. I did not give it a chance to breath as I wanted to get to my scotch. This was great. Pale straw colored and a nice mild fruit and floral nose. It was very subtle and not tropical, but more like orchard florals. The fruit continued on the tongue and then you got the mineral tingle so prevalent in many of the big burgs. This was not creamy at all, in fact it resembled more of a Sauvignon Blanc then a legacy Chardonnay. Not what you would typically have with pulled pork sliders, but what a great glass of wine. I think I have a couple more and glad i do.

To back up the amazing Figgins, I pulled two bottles of 2008 Mondavi Private Reserve from my locker at Hanna’s. They too were opened about 4PM so they had been breathing for about 4+ hours. Similar to its cousin from the North (Figgins) the Mondavi had big berries on the nose and some unidentifiable florals (which could have come from the ladies thanking us for the rounds of drinks?). Not quite as chewy as the Figgins, but smooth just the same. The tannins were smooth, but the acidics were present in an interestingly pleasurable way. If you were concerned, we shared these two bottles with plenty of people. It was a great paring with the incredible beef Sean and team Hanna’s put together.

Reverting back to scotch, I watched as Ted and Mike Enjoyed the first sips of a 2008 Figgin’s Estate Cabernet. You are supposed to enjoy wine with all five senses and this time I also enjoyed watching them enjoy.
The first pour was gooey and sticky almost jammy. I chugged my scotch to get into this action. Mean dark inky purple in the glass, and grasping the sides with the legs of an octopus. Berries, cherries, and orchard fruits galore. I had Kyle open the wines three hours earlier so it was sittin’ on ready. Smooth as smooth could be in the mouth. Still got the orchard fruits, but picked up more earthly qualities on the tongue. Smokey meats, leatherish, and a touch of licorice really rounded this out. This was one of the best cabs I have had since a recent taste of Merus or Cade. Wow! This is yet another fine example of the Yakima/Walla Walla valley area. Destined to be the next Napa-Bordeaux of its day.

I opened it 2 hours before dinner but did not decant as it was a large format. First whiff was very promising with a floral big black fruit thing going on. Maybe some plum or chalk smell. In the mouth, it was pretty acidic. The first could sips had a bite to it. I would also say there is a slight bit of oxidation going on. If this was stored properly for all these years (Always a question when you buy from auction), this one is reached and possible past its prime. I have one more and will be drinking it soon.

My name is Brian and I am a wine snob. This was given us as a gift over the Holidays. I think I opened it to add to some stock while making stroganoff, and it was in our wine cabinet opened, but corked for about 9 days. I wanted a quick glass of red to walk around the house, so I figured what the heck. It was the right color for a CA cab and had no viscosity to speak of. I was not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised at the first whiff. Everything was subtle, but there were a hint of floral exotics and even dark fruit. The tannins had by now escaped so this was really mellow almost, boring. On the tongue, it was smooth and enjoyable. It lacked any complexity probably due to the nine days of being cooped up an open bottle. It’s lack of anything difficult going on reminded me of oh so many Merlots I have tried to enjoy. For the value (Even if I had paid for it), it is a nice table wine.
